Royal Antwerp have lost six of their seven major European matches against Spanish opposition (W1), including a 5-0 defeat on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League against Barcelona. Their one win was at home against the same opponents in a 1965 Fairs Cup game.
This is only Barcelona’s second ever away UEFA Champions League game in Belgium, winning the other 1-0 in October 2002 against Club Brugge thanks to a Juan Román Riquelme goal.
Royal Antwerp have lost their first two UEFA Champions League home games while conceding three times in each game (2-3 vs Shakhtar, 1-4 vs FC Porto), the first side to do so in their first two home games in the competition since both Bursaspor and MSK Zilina in 2010-11. No side has ever done so in their first three home games in the competition.
Avoiding defeat in this game will see Barcelona win their group in the UEFA Champions League for a 22nd time (including second group stages), and first time since 2019-20. The Spaniards already hold the record for the most groups ended top in the history of the competition with 21.
Royal Antwerp have lost all five of their UEFA Champions League matches this season. Only five sides have ever lost their first six in the competition, and none since Romanian side Otelul Galati back in 2011.
Barcelona have lost on MD6 of the group stage in two of the last three seasons, as many as in their first 27 group stages in the competition (W19 D6 L2). They did, however, win 4-2 away at Viktoria Plzen last season.
Barcelona have lost four of their six away UEFA Champions League games under Xavi, one more than they lost in their previous 21 away games (W10 D8 L3). He is the only Barcelona manager to have lost more than 50% of his away games in the competition (67%).
In the opening five matchdays of the UEFA Champions League this season, Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gündogan made more passes that broke the opposition’s defensive line than any other player (13). Indeed, no player created more chances via line-breaking passes than the German in the same period (5).
Royal Antwerp manager Mark van Bommel is winless in all 14 of his UEFA Champions League matches as a manager (D4 L10) across spells with PSV, Wolfsburg and Antwerp. It is the most games any manager has managed without winning in the competition’s history, while three of his 10 defeats have come against Barcelona, a side he played for in their 2006 UEFA Champions League final win.
João Cancelo scored a goal, assisted a goal, created five chances and completed six dribbles against FC Porto last time out in the UEFA Champions League – the last Barcelona player to do that in a match in the competition was Lionel Messi versus Juventus in October 2020 (one goal, one assist, five chances created, seven completed dribbles).
