    Kairat 0-2 Real Madrid

That should be a hat-trick for Kylian Mbappe. He is played in by Vinicius Jr and is free, with no defenders anywhere near him and only the goalkeeper to beat.

But somehow Mbappe makes a real mess of the shot and pulls it well wide. No-one in the stadium can believe that one.

  2. CLOSE!published at 19:00 BST

    Atalanta 0-1 Club Brugge

Davide Zappacosta, the former Chelsea defender, came on at half-time for Atalanta and has a chance to make it 1-1 and angles a low shot across goal, only for the ball to go just wide.

  3. goal

GOAL - Kairat 0-2 Real Madridpublished at 52 mins

    Kylian Mbappe

That should be that. Kylian Mbappe, just as he did in gameweek one in Real's 2-1 victory over Marseille, gets two in the Champions League.

He is set free and only has the goalkeeper to beat, with Mbappe lifting a lovely, chipped finish over the teenager to double Real's advantage.

  6. Salah starts on the benchpublished at 18:52 BST

    Galatasaray v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Istanbul

Arne Slot will no doubt give his explanation but it is still very strange to see the name of Mohamed Salah relegated to the ranks of Liverpool substitutes for this Champions League game against Galatasaray here in Istanbul.

Salah has been nowhere near his best this season but he's still a player you can count on in the big matches.

  9. Semi-final defeat 'made us stronger', say Bodo/Glimtpublished at 18:47 BST

    Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

    Bodo/Glimt

Bodo/Glimt sporting director Havard Sakariassen speaking to BBC Sport on last season's Europa League semi-final defeat to Tottenham: "For us, it was a lot of learning. The reflection for us after the game was [to ask if] there was enough level on the physical side.

"So, actually, that brought something to the table for us that we are grateful to have the knowledge about.

"It means we have since then changed and worked in a slightly better and more reflective way to see if we can realise the potential in the physical side of our players.

"That made us stronger and hopefully we will see that when we see them again that we actually moved up a step. That will be interesting."

It is early into the season, but the race for extra Champions League places next year is already off and running.

BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team has been looking into who is currently leading...

Which countries are leading the race to earn extra Champions League places?

Denmark and Portugal are currently ahead in the race to win the two extra Champions League places on offer for next season's competition.

Since the start of the 2024-25 season, when the Champions League's first round expanded from 32 teams to 36, Uefa have handed an extra qualifying place to each of the two best-performing nations in the previous season.

After just one round of Champions League and Europa League fixtures and with the Conference League not starting until October - the majority of games have been qualifying matches, so more points have been on offer to lower-ranked nations so far.

Denmark have moved above Cyprus to go top this week, climbing to 6.125 points. However, Denmark only have two of their four clubs left in Europe.

Portugal have also climbed above Cyprus this week following wins for Porto and Braga, with Cyprus dropping from first to third following the first round of Europa League matches.

England and Spain benefited from the extra spots in 2025-26, with Germany and Italy getting the additional places in 2024-25.

    Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

Life under Thomas Frank is rosy so far for Tottenham fans.

They sit fourth in the Premier League after three wins, two draws and a loss and have also reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Spurs started life in the Champions League with a home win against Villarreal last week as they look to make it six points from six.

At Marseille, boss Roberto de Zerbi and the chairman have managed to put together a mixture of misfits, veterans and quality players that are going to do whatever he wants them to do. He feeds on the environment at the Velodrome and the energy was transmitted into the team [against PSG].

What is even more interesting is that he allows the mixture of players freedom in the system and everyone is so in love with De Zerbi, including the players, and they are heading into one place together.

Atletico Madrid tasted defeat in an enthralling game against Liverpool at Anfield last week but will have renewed optimism after thrashing bitter rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in La Liga on Saturday.

But they will take on Eintracht Frankfurt without manager Diego Simeone in the dug out. He will serve a one-match ban for "unsporting conduct" following his clash with Liverpool fans after the Reds' late winner on matchday one.

    Christos Tzolis

The visitors take the lead in Italy with a fine goal from former Norwich City midfielder Christos Tzolis.

Atalanta lose the ball 30 yards from their own goal and it proves costly as it finds its way to Tzolis, who twists and turns to create space on the edge of the penalty area before curling a fine finish into the far corner.

For Jose Mourinho to come back to Benfica with a good squad, talented squad, a young squad, is very interesting. We'll have to see how it goes.

Whoever wrote the script that he would have his first Champions League game back at Chelsea...It's just incredible.

I can't wait for the ride, to see how long he lasts, for the ups and the downs, because inevitably it will be like that.

  20. Lots of interest in Jose's returnpublished at 18:20 BST

    Chelsea v Benfica (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter at Stamford Bridge

As Jose Mourinho said yesterday, he has been back to Chelsea plenty of times before as an opposition manager and he has a house close by in central London, so he is not exactly a limited presence in these parts.

Yet no matter what he - or Chelsea for that matter - do, they will be inextricably linked.

Mourinho moulded his reputation at Chelsea after his initial success at Porto. He took the club to the top of the English game, which is what then owner Roman Abramovich demanded.

A visit to Stamford Bridge by the Special One will always be special.
