The mood in the room is split down the middle, slightly edging towards 'yes', with Tuchel having some work to do to win over the doubters.

  2. Tuchel's track recordpublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 15 October

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Thomas Tuchel was a charismatic and successful leader at Chelsea and wrote himself into history by winning the Champions League in 2021.

The German was keen to stay on longer term in Roman Abramovich’s set-up which consisted of key figures, including Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech.

However, a rift quickly emerged after the two left following a change of ownership under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership which led to his exit in September 2022.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel was exceptional with the English media, worked well with the club’s academy talent and was popular with supporters.

It's fair to say Tuchel also fell in love with English football during his spell in west London and has targeted a return to managing in this country.

Many former players remain loyal and friendly with Tuchel but the pragmatic style of play sometimes led to criticism.

Tuchel's club management record suggests he has a problem with owners' authority and his own temperament. That does not bode well for the kind of relationships that he'll need to cultivate at England level, demanding club managers, fans, press and all. Square peg, round hole

  4. Previous England managers - Sam Allardyce (2016)published at 20:14 British Summer Time 15 October

Overall record: Played one, won one, drawn none, lost none, scored one, conceded none, win ratio 100%.

Sam Allardyce became England boss in July 2016 but only managed for one game - a late 1-0 away win against Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier.

He only lasted 67 days before he was dismissed. It followed a newspaper investigation claiming he offered advice on how to "get around" rules on player transfers.

An FA statement said Allardyce's conduct "was inappropriate" and he was gone.

  5. What does Tuchel's record look like?published at 20:12 British Summer Time 15 October

Since taking up his first role in first-team management with Mainz 05 in 2009, Tuchel has taken charge of 578 games in his career across three different countries.

He boasts 337 wins in those fixtures and has amassed over 2 points per game at Borussia Dortmund, Paris St-Germain and Chelsea.

  6. What are Tuchel's news conferences like?published at 20:08 British Summer Time 15 October

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Former England manager Gareth Southgate played a statesman-like role at times as England manager - asked to speak on whatever topic was dominating the news agenda.

I've sat in more than 100 media appearances from Thomas Tuchel, including during his fascinating spell managing Chelsea during the sanctions on Roman Abramovich by the UK government, a time when he was the most senior figure speaking on the record about the situation.

At a club which has had more managers than most within English football over the last decade, the German was one of the most articulate, funny and impassioned that they have had.

Tuchel was always a story which helped feed the football media environment that puts the Premier League at the heart of public conversation in the UK and beyond.

In a week where interim boss Lee Carsley has struggled to handle his media duties, Tuchel can confidently say he can handle the pressure on an England manager, which as Gareth Southgate found out, often get asked to comment on matters beyond just formations and tactics.

England interim manager Lee Carsley’s all-out attacking strategy backfired badly as they slumped to a shock defeat by Greece in the Uefa Nations League at Wembley on Thursday.

Jude Bellingham's 87th-minute goal looked to have rescued a desperately disappointing England display after Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a deserved lead with a composed finish four minutes into the second half.

Greece responded to earn a deserved victory as Pavlidis struck again deep into stoppage time on a chastening night for England and interim boss Carsley.

In the absence of injured captain Harry Kane, Carsley went without a recognised striker by using Jude Bellingham in a false nine role and playing Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer.

The result was a disjointed, confused mess, as Carsley’s 100% record since succeeding Gareth Southgate was ended by a well-organised Greece side, who actually had the ball in the net five times only to see three ruled out for offside.

Just a reminder if you're just joining us that Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become England's next permanent manager.

It is a situation which looked a million miles away less than a week ago.

Lee Carsley, in temporary charge for a six-game period, gained two wins in his first two matches and the job seemed to be his to lose.

But a disastrous 2-1 home loss to Greece was his first defeat, although the Three Lions did then win 3-1 away at Finland on Sunday.

Morif: Exciting times ahead for England. Tuchel brings a wealth of experience and tactical brilliance. Can't wait to see how he transforms the team.

Aiaz Khan: That’s huge news. Thomas Tuchel brings a lot of experience and tactical knowledge to the England role. It’ll be interesting to see how he shapes the team moving forward. Exciting times for English football.

  10. Recent previous England managers - Gareth Southgate (2016-2024)published at 19:57 British Summer Time 15 October

Tournament record: Fourth at 2018 World Cup, runners-up at Euro 2020, quarter-final at 2022 World Cup, runners-up at Euro 2024.

    Overall record: Played 102, won 61, drawn 24, lost 17, scored 213, conceded 72, win ratio 59.8%.

Gareth Southgate took temporary charge of the England side in September 2016, and was unbeaten in four games, earning the role on a permanent basis.

For the first time since 1990, England's men's team reached the semi-finals of a World Cup in 2018, losing to Croatia after extra time. They went even further at the European Championship in 2021, but lost to Italy on penalties in the Wembley final.

A quarter-final loss to France in the 2022 World Cup followed. Southgate contemplated leaving the role after that tournament but stayed on, taking England to the final at Euro 2024, where they lost to Spain.

  11. Who are Tuchel's favourites around the England squad?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 15 October

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Thomas Tuchel has a very clear way of playing.

The turnaround he produced at Chelsea, taking over after Frank Lampard was sacked in January 2021, to winning the Champions League in May the same year is one of the most impressive I have seen in football.

In his team that won the Champions League at Chelsea he had three English players in Reece James, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell.

Those three are away from the England squad now, but if Reece James is able to regain fitness and form he will be in and around the England squad and a possible option to come in and know what is wanted from the German.

England captain Harry Kane was signed by Tuchel when he was manager of Bayern Munich and had the best season of his career scoring 44 goals in 45 games.

  12. Which England players has Tuchel managed?published at 19:51 British Summer Time 15 October

Thomas Tuchel may not have managed in international football before but he has worked with numerous England players.

Here's some of the players he has managed at club level:

    • Harry Kane - Bayern Munich
    • Eric Dier - Bayern Munich
    • Mason Mount - Chelsea
    • Reece James - Chelsea
    • Ben Chilwell - Chelsea
    • Callum Hudson-Odoi - Chelsea
    • Ruben Loftus-Cheek - Chelsea

No, no and no again. The manager of England has to be English. We tried and failed with the big names. Spain and Argentina have both gone with coaches who have come through the age groups. We must develop and promote our own players and coaches, otherwise we will be back where we were.

  14. 'He likes the mentality of English players'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 15 October

German journalist Raphael Honigstein has said Thomas Tuchel has "a talent for getting a lot out of a squad" but has become "more conservative" in his style in recent years.

Have a watch of what he believes the pros and cons are that Tuchel could bring to England.

  15. What style does Tuchel play?published at 19:45 British Summer Time 15 October

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Helsinki Olympic Stadium

Thomas Tuchel’s teams are very well organised with every player knowing their jobs to the letter.

At Chelsea he had a structured 3-4-3 formation and at Bayern Munich he used a 4-2-3-1 formation.

I was at the game when his Bayern side played Arsenal in the Champions League last season and he was straight on to every player if they did not do their jobs.

Tuchel’s teams could be described as direct or playing through the lines quickly and in that Bayern v Arsenal tie Eric Dier had a role to hit long range diagonal passes to the quick wingers as fast as possible.

Thomas Tuchel has been popular with the fans and players at every club he has managed. His problem has been with interfering owners. A good choice for the England job in my view if left to get on with it.

Thomas Tuchel managed England captain Harry Kane for a season when the striker joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.

Kane scored 36 goals and assisted eight times in 32 Bundesliga appearances.

He also scored eight goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-final stages, losing to Real Madrid.

  19. Tuchel's trophy haulpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 15 October

Thomas Tuchel has won trophies in all three of the countries he has managed in, winning league titles in both France and Germany.

While he wasn't able to topple Pep Guardiola's Manchester City for the Premier League during his short stint in England, he was able to impressively overcome Guardiola's side in the 2020-21 Champions League final as Chelsea got their hands on the title for the second time.

    Tuchel's full list of silverware:

    • 1x Champions League
    • 1x FIFA Club World Cup
    • 1x German Champion
    • 2x French Champion
    • 1x German Cup
    • 1x UEFA Super Cup
    • 1x French Cup

Thomas Tuchel was first appointed as Augsburg II manager in 2007, for one season before moving to Mainz 05.

After a successful five-year spell, he moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

Two seasons later he moved to Paris St-Germain and in 2021 he was appointed Chelsea boss. He was sacked by the Blues after just over a season and he was named Bayern Munich boss a year later.

Tuchel left the role at the German club in May.
