  2. Silva the only player Rose was ‘nervous playing against’published at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

Former Tottenham left-back Danny Rose told the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast that the one player he didn’t enjoy facing during his career was Bernardo Silva.

He told the podcast that he first played against Silva when the City midfielder was at Monaco.

“You know when you just first look at somebody and you just think, ‘oh, I've got the better of him, he doesn't look strong’, but he was just two steps ahead every single time,” said Rose.

“He'd go in the pocket, I couldn't tackle him, and even his ball control when he was out wide, he's just unbelievable,” the 34-year-old told the podcast, adding, “he's the only one I'd probably say I'm nervous playing against.”

People talk about managing big clubs like Barca and City as though it's easy. All those egos in the dressing room, keeping everyone happy and persuading them to trust your system is not an easy, especially at the highest level. Pep makes his players believe, like only the best managers can.

  4. Rose sought legal advice after release of conversation with Mourinhopublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

In the latest episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, guest Danny Rose spoke about the famous scene from Amazon Prime documentary All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur, in which he confronted then manager Jose Mourinho.

The scene, in which Rose argued with Mourinho about his lack of playing time, went viral when the documentary was released.

Rose told the podcast that he wasn’t aware that cameras were filming during the conversation.

“When Pochettino was there, there were no cameras in his office,” he said, adding, “so when I've gone to knock on the door, I'm assuming there's still no cameras in the office.”

The former defender, who was loaned to Newcastle shortly after the scene was filmed, said that he, "wasn't happy," when he realised the clip was going to be in the documentary series and, “had to get legal advice”.

  5. ‘Best feeling’ - Rose on debut goal against Arsenalpublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

Former Tottenham left-back Danny Rose said that his debut goal against Arsenal in 2010 was “probably my best feeling that I've had.”

The 34-year-old is a guest on this week’s episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast and reflected on that famous derby day 30-yard volley, which he scored just 10 minutes into his Premier League debut.

Rose told the podcast that there was some luck involved in him playing that day. He explains that then-Spurs manager Harry Redknapp put him in at right wing because he wanted to make changes after a shock FA Cup semi-final defeat to relegated Portsmouth.

“Had Spurs won at the week and I would never have been given a chance,” Rose told the podcast.

All of the clubs in the Premier League and English Football League could be owned by American investors in the next five to 10 years, according to a football investment expert.

A number of clubs in the top four tiers have either been taken over or received investment from across the Atlantic in the past few years.

Adam Sommerfeld told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club it is a trend he thinks will continue.

"Fourteen of the 20 Premier League teams are LLP [limited liability partnership] minority-owned [by Americans] and at least a third of the EFL are," Sommerfeld, a sports investment specialist for advisory firm Certus Capital Partners, said.

"I can't see how all of them won't have American investment in the next five to 10 years.

"I know what we have in terms of our trend line and our competitors and I'm not aware of a team that hasn't had a conversation with an American investor in the past few months. Every team is talking to them."

Guardiola has only ever taken dominant teams and made them a bit more dominant. He's never taken a Dortmund or a Liverpool to a league title, both of whom were nowhere near winning the league before Klopp. I really don't understand the hype around Guardiola, there is no evidence he can manage any team except the wealthiest and most dominant one in the league. That doesn't make him even close to the greatest in my book.

Dortmund finished 13th the season before Klopp took charge in 2008 but Liverpool were Premier League runners-up in 2013-14, before Klopp succeeded Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

Well done to all of you who, like Richard and Adam, said that the only teams that Pep Guardiola has faced as a manager and not beaten are Celtic and Wigan.

Celtic drew both their Champions League group games with City in 2016-17 while League One Wigan pulled off an almighty shock by knocking City out of the FA Cup in 2017-18.

Re: teams Guardiola has never beaten. Celtic and Wigan isn't it?

    Richard (smug Wigan fan)

I'm sure Will Grigg scored the winner against city for Wigan and I can only remember Celtic drawing with them under Pep.

  14. 'I blame myself' - Lafferty on not reaching 100 capspublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Northern Ireland

Kyle Lafferty says he blames himself for the "massive" regrets he has about his career, which include feigning injury to avoid playing Northern Ireland matches when he was younger.

Lafferty scored 20 goals in 89 caps for Northern Ireland, his goals helping the country qualify for Euro 2016, but has not been selected since receiving a 10-game ban for a sectarian comment he made in September 2022.

The 37-year-old, who played for Kilmarnock at the time of the incident, was withdrawn from the Northern Ireland squad and subsequently banned for 10 matches by the Scottish Football Association.

Lafferty says that while he does not know if the incident was the reason for his continued absence from the Northern Ireland squad, he accepts he "took liberties" when he was receiving call-ups earlier on his career.

"[I] didn't turn up at times when I should have," Lafferty told BBC Sport NI in a wide-ranging interview.

"Not reaching a 100 caps, I blame myself for it, I should be well into a 100. I wouldn't change my career for a second but there are disappointments.

Asked to expand on his regrets, Lafferty said: "Deciding to go on holiday instead of playing for your country at times. This was like when I was 21, 22, 23, just knowing that I'd done well previously that I'd get another call-up, taking liberties like I said.

"Maybe throwing in an injury where the rest of the team I was at might have been getting a few days off and taking the days off rather than going to play for your country."

When asked to confirm he had feigned injury at times, he said: "I wasn't injured, yeah, just stuff like that. Just daft stuff that you look back and think 'it was just so stupid of me'."

    Liechtenstein 1-3 San Marino

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

San Marino midfielder Marcello Mularoni on his day job as a business consultant: "Today I'm going to work so it's really fun to go to work and see my colleagues, for their congratulations. When we arrived by bus, there was a bit of a celebration at our stadium. That is our home and that was a big surprise for us because we did not expect that. That's fantastic.

"Fans see in us what they do in life. As I said, we work during the day and we use football like our passion. We give all of ourselves to do the best for our national team. Probably, fans understand that. I appreciate it so much."

  17. San Marino 'in a dream' after historic winpublished at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Liechtenstein 1-3 San Marino

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

San Marino midfielder Marcello Mularoni: "I'm like in a dream. I wake up and I'm already smiling because we made history. I can't really imagine right now but we knew we had to do that and make history, so why not be happy?

"I think we had a really good transformation and we changed our mentality, with us trying to not throw away the ball during the game. The main goal arrived with the win in the game.

"There are a lot of players that are working during the day and then they go to training with their team during the night after work so it is a little bit hard, but this kind of sacrifice is always for the win, for this kind of emotion. Now the team is younger, there are a lot of players that are playing football, it brings us more freshness and brings us the victory."

  18. San Marino claim first ever away winpublished at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Liechtenstein 1-3 San Marino

San Marino, the world's bottom ranked team, made history as they were promoted to the third tier of the Nations League with the first away win in their history - against Liechtenstein.

It was also the first time they scored more than once in a competitive game and the first time they had scored three goals in any match.

The minnows' two previous victories also came against Liechtenstein - a friendly in 2004 and a Nations League game in September, both 1-0 and both in San Marino.

The country ranked 210th in the Fifa world rankings have lost 199 of the 211 fixtures they have contested. They have conceded 10 or more goals in seven games.

Roberto Cevoli, who managed several lower-league Italian sides before becoming San Marino boss last year, has now led them to two wins in 10 games.

And the nation landlocked by Italy did so by coming from behind to win a game for the first time.

  19. Gyokeres scores four as Sweden crush Azerbaijanpublished at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Sweden 6-0 Azerbaijan

Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres scored four goals, Tottenham forward Dejan Kulusevski got two and Newcastle's Alexander Isak missed a penalty as Sweden crushed Azerbaijan.

Sweden had already won Nations League Group C1 with a game to spare and only needed 10 minutes before scoring through Kulusevski's first of the night.

The Spurs man then set up Gyokeres, with him scoring again in the 37th minute.

Isak thought he had made it 4-0 at the end of the first half, only for a video assistant referee (VAR) decision to rule him offside.

The Newcastle striker then had a penalty saved by Azerbaijan goalkeeper Rza Cafarov, although Kulusevski then scored Sweden's fourth goal nine minutes later.

Azerbaijan, already guaranteed to finish bottom of the group and be relegated, instantly lost possession from the restart and that allowed Gyokeres to complete his hat-trick before he grabbed his fourth in the 70th minute.

Gyokeres, who played in the English Championship with Swansea City and Coventry City before moving to Portugal, has scored 23 club goals for Sporting this season and nine goals for Sweden in 2024-25.
