Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored a Panenka penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time as Hungary grabbed a late equaliser to deny Germany victory in their Nations League tie.

Szoboszlai chipped his spot-kick down the middle of the goal after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check led to on-pitch official Duje Strukan watching on a pitchside monitor to judge Robin Koch had handled Mihaly Kata's shot.

Germany, who had already won Group A3 with a game to spare, took the lead through Felix Nmecha's first international goal, converting a rebound from close range after Nico Schlotterbeck's effort had been parried by Denes Dibusz.

Julian Nagelsmann made nine changes to his Germany side, who remained unbeaten in their Nations League campaign and will face either Croatia, Italy or Denmark in March's quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Hungary finish third in their group and will play a two-legged relegation play-off in March, needing to win to stay in the top tier of the competition.

Lautaro Martinez moved level with Diego Maradona in Argentina's all-time scoring charts in a World Cup qualifying win over Peru in Buenos Aires.

The 27-year-old now sits joint-fifth alongside Maradona, though he remains some way behind top-scorer Messi's 112 goals. Gabriel Batistuta, Sergio Aguero and Hernan Crespo complete the top five.

Inter Miami forward Messi, 37, is now tied with former United States forward Landon Donovan for most international assists with 58.

  3. 'Bellamy's had the best start of a Wales manager ever'published at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Wales 4-1 Iceland

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Wales striker Sam Vokes on Wales boss Craig Bellamy: "I think he's been great since he's come in and you see the work he's put in on the sideline with his backroom staff. The decisions they make during the game have been key. He's had the best start of a Wales manager ever - three wins and three draws. He probably couldn't have asked for a better start in his opening campaign."

On the Nations League: "I understand people's views on that. I played for Wales when sometimes you have endless friendlies - they don't have that much importance, they don't have a crowd coming in. You look at Cardiff [City Stadium] last night, it was a full, packed house. It's also a gateway for us as a nation to try to get to the World Cup. Last night, winning the group allowed us to get a play-off for the 2026 World Cup, so that's another way to reach it, if we don't do it in the group stage."

  4. Wales boss Bellamy wanted to prove 'I'm not a lunatic'published at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Wales 4-1 Iceland

    Wales

After leading Wales to promotion back to League A of the Nations League, Craig Bellamy said he wanted to show that people had misconceptions about how he would act as a manager after behind handed the Wales job.

"I'm not a lunatic, I'm quite sane," he said. "People thought I'd be running on the pitch and pushing the ref and stuff."

Wales have won three and drawn three of Bellamy's first six games in charge.

  5. 'Miracle' result for Walespublished at 12:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Wales 4-1 Iceland

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Wales striker Sam Vokes on Wales' return to the Nations League's top tier: "I'm very happy. I think it was a bit of a miracle turnout in the end. I don't think we believed it could possibly happen but it did in the end, which was great.

On Fulham midfielder Harry Wilson: "He is [important for Wales]. He's on very good form. It was interesting to watch last night. I think he played a bit deeper and allowed Liam Cullen to be more forward, which paid off because he got his first two goals for Wales.

"It was a great performance and Harry Wilson turning up with a great finish in the end, that's four goals in five [Wales] games for him now. He's our star man at the moment."

  6. Unbeaten Wales eye World Cup thanks to Bellamy beliefpublished at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2024

    Wales 4-1 Iceland

    Chris Wathan
    BBC Sport Wales

Wales' players believe they will get better and better under Craig Bellamy as they eye taking Nations League momentum towards the World Cup.

A 4-1 win over Iceland in Cardiff - coupled with Turkey's defeat in Montenegro - sealed Wales' promotion to League A as group winners.

It also gives Wales a chance of a 2026 World Cup qualifying play-off, regardless of how they fare in next year's campaign.

But with the victory making it six unbeaten under Bellamy since he replaced Rob Page in July, the Wales dressing room is mirroring the mindset of their manager by aiming beyond second chances.

"That's the dream, we all want to make the World Cup," said Swansea City striker Liam Cullen, who scored Wales' opening two in Cardiff, his first for his country.

"I don't think there was a better way than this to start off the manager's reign and hopefully we can take it into the qualifiers. We can go into that campaign full of confidence."

Man United hadn't won a league title in 19 years when Fergie took over, Old Trafford was a 40,000 capacity mess, the youth team didn't exist and they were financially struggling, what he turned that club into is staggering. When you compare that to Pep, City had won a league title less than 2 years prior to his arrival, they had a 15 year old state of the art stadium and an academy to go with it and a little bit of money to play with. Not belittling Pep's achievements at all, but the foundations were well in place for him. What Fergie did goes beyond tactics and winning trophies, although he didn't do too badly there either.

Cheers Tim. He sort of did that with Barcelona B, sort of.

I'd genuinely love to see Guardiola take on a more difficult project and see what he could do. All the teams he has managed so far had already been packed with superstars when he started and pretty much had money to burn.

Thanks Rob, and Andrew earlier, for your overlooked greatest manager selections.

I always think Steve Clarke leading an average West Brom side to an eighth-placed Premier League finish doesn't get the love it deserves.

The greatest premier league manager of all time is Steve McLaren in my book! Kept an average Middlesbrough side in the top flight for over a decade, won a league cup and got to a Europa League final. That would be a feat for most teams now, even in the top 4!
