Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports: "Even when you play well and put them under pressure - second half I think they were suffering - but you have to take your chances and be more clinical.

"It was the type of game we expected. We did well for 25 minutes and then started to lose the high press as we got tired.

"They scored the goal but the second half was very good from our side. But in the end we missed the most important thing which was the finishing.

"We were brave in the second half and we were close to having something, but we couldn't do it.

"It is very difficult to get a result against them. We defended well but on the other side we didn't finish the things we created.

"I think we we are playing well. Now I hope we continue with this level of football and intensity."

Only Burnley have collected fewer Premier League points in 2024 than the Cherries, who have drawn three and lost three of their six league games since the turn of the year.

However, as was the case in recent games against Fulham and Newcastle, there was enough in this performance to suggest Andoni Iraola's team will turn the tide eventually - particularly with what looks like a favourable run of fixtures coming up next month.

After Milos Kerkez stung Ederson's palms with 10 minutes gone, Bournemouth failed to register a shot at the Brazilian's goal until Ryan Christie's low effort in first-half stoppage time.

However, the Cherries carved out the better opportunities in the second half and should have equalised when Marcus Tavernier scuffed Antoine Semenyo's cross into the ground.

Dominic Solanke had a header punched off the line by Ederson, before second-half substitute Enes Unal headed agonisingly wide in deep into added time.

Despite the defeat, Bournemouth remain eight points above the bottom three and will be confident of increasing that cushion against struggling Burnley and Sheffield United in their next two league games.

  3. Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester City: Key statspublished at 19:43 24 February

    • Since Manchester City’s last defeat against Aston Villa in December, they have won more league matches (9) and earned more points (29) than any other side in the Premier League.

    • Bournemouth have never won a league game against Manchester City in 20 attempts (D2 L18), losing all 14 in the Premier League. This is both the most a side has faced another without winning in Football League history, and most a side has faced another without ever avoiding defeat in Premier League history.

    • In all competitions, Manchester City have won more away games this season (14) than they did in the entirety of their treble-winning campaign last season (13).

    • Bournemouth are winless in seven Premier League games (D3 L4), having won six of their previous seven beforehand (D1).

    • Phil Foden has scored 16 goals for Manchester City in all competitions this season, his joint-most in a single campaign, along with 2020-21. He now has six goal involvements in five Premier League appearances against Bournemouth (4 goals, 2 assists), only recording more against Brighton (7).

    • As well as scoring the game’s only goal, no player created more chances (4), had more shots (4), or won possession more times (9) than Foden in this match. Today was only the second time he's created four or more chances and attempted 4 or more shots in a single Premier League away game in his career (also v Newcastle in January 2024).

  4. Full-time: Bournemouth 0-1 Man Citypublished at 19:36 24 February

    Have your say

Manchester City moved a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool with a hard-fought victory over Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium.

City started slowly but took the lead midway through the first half when Phil Foden steered home after Erling Haaland's shot was saved by Neto.

The visitors dominated the rest of the half but were fortunate not to be pegged back early in the second, Marcus Tavernier scuffing a shot into the ground from Antoine Semenyo's cross before shooting wide after fine work from Dominic Solanke.

Solanke had a header punched off the line by Ederson as Bournemouth continued to apply pressure, while Haaland had another shot saved by Neto with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Second-half substitute Enes Unal headed agonisingly wide in stoppage time for the hosts, as City held on to consolidate second place ahead of crucial games at home to Manchester United and away to Liverpool in early March.

Bournemouth, now without a win in their last seven league matches, stay eight points above the relegation zone but drop a place to 14th.

  6. Bournemouth v Man City: Sutton's predictionspublished at 14:03 24 February

    Sutton's predictions

BBC pundit Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For this weekend's games, he takes on former England striker Jermain Defoe.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

Manchester City were a bit ugly in their win over Brentford on Tuesday, but they got the job done in the end.

I can see something similar happening here, with City having to fight for it but finding a way to win.

Bournemouth have not won since Boxing Day, but they were unlucky not to beat Newcastle last week and they don't appear to be in any relegation danger.

I can see them scoring against City, but they won't have anything else to celebrate.

    Jermain's prediction: 1-3

Owen Bevan has returned to Bournemouth without playing a single game on loan to Hibernian, but the Scottish Premiership club could be keen to bring the 20-year-old centre-half back to Easter Road this summer.

Bevan, who played 14 times for League One side Cheltenham before his loan there ended in December, joined Hibs on transfer deadline day and was due to link up with Nick Montgomery's squad for the first time on 5 February.

But "following a further injury" during his rehabilitation programme, the Wales Under-21 international is back with the Premier League club until the end of the season.

"He was a good young player I was looking forward to bringing in," head coach Montgomery said.

"He is a player we are definitely keen on bringing to the club. We will monitor the situation and hopefully he can get himself back from that injury towards the end of the season and we will keep an eye on it."

Defence has been Hibs' Achilles heel this season, but Montgomery believes he has plenty of cover now despite the loss of Bevan.

"I think with the squad with the way it is at the minute we have a lot of strength in depth," he added.

"We have Rocky Bushiri coming back and he has had a full week's training, so we are in a good space with the squad."

  8. Iraola on turning draws into wins and using home advantage against Man Citypublished at 14:38 23 February

    Millie Sian
    BBC Sport journalist

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been speaking to the media before the Cherries face Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

    Here are the main headlines:

    • Iraola anticipates the squad will be "very similar" to the one he had against Newcastle United. Romain Faivre has recovered from illness and has trained normally this week, but the Cherries will still be without Philip Billing because of suspension.

    • On Faivre, Iraola added: "I think he has been good in the minutes he's played, but he hasn't played a lot of minutes. It's difficult because we have very good options, especially in the forward positions, but I think he is ready. If we need him, he's ready."

    • Iraola recognises Bournemouth have been "drawing a lot of games lately", especially in games when they were in front. The Cherries believe they "should have more points right now" and are hoping to get back to winning ways, after six games without a victory, "the sooner the better".

    • On learning from their 2-2 draw against Newcastle: "I would like us to be much more aggressive and make them run backwards more. We know that they're going to be on the ball and playing high, but I think we can do and we have to do much better."

    • He is hoping Manchester City will be "having a bad day" when they meet on Saturday: "You definitely need them to have a bad day because they are a very strong team. You need them to miss some chances, make some mistakes, but also we have to be on a very good day. You have to make them play uncomfortably and give them the opportunity to make mistakes."

    • Iraola hopes the Cherries can use their home advantage at Vitality Stadium: "The ground is a little bit smaller and the people inside are also really close. I hope we can also use our stadium and make them play not an easy game, at least."

    • He is "happy now" for his former assistant coach Inigo Perez, who struggled to obtain a work permit to join Iraola at Bournemouth and has now been appointed as Rayo Vallecano manager: "I want him to do well there, coaching Rayo. It's obvious we wanted him to be with us but it wasn't possible, we couldn't change anything, he wasn't allowed to work here."

  9. Bournemouth v Man City: Pick of the statspublished at 16:38 22 February

Here are the key facts and figures before Saturday's game between Bournemouth and Manchester City in the Premier League.

    • Bournemouth have won none of their 19 league games against Manchester City (D2 L17), the most any side has ever faced another without winning in English Football League history.

    • City have won all 13 of their Premier League games against Bournemouth, the best 100% record any team has against another in English top-flight history.

    • Since a run of six wins from seven Premier League games in November and December, Bournemouth have failed to win any of their past six games (D3 L3), and only Burnley (two) have collected fewer points in 2024 so far than the Cherries (three). They have, however, scored at least once in 15 of their past 16 league matches, with the only exception being a 4-0 home loss to Liverpool last month.

    • City have fallen behind in their past six league away games, though have come back to win the past four. Only Manchester United (six in 2020) have won more consecutive away games from behind in the competition.

    • Having only netted six Premier League goals last season, Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke has scored 14 in 24 games this term. Only Joshua King in 2016-17 (16) has scored more in a top-flight season for the Cherries. Of Solanke’s 14 goals this season, 12 have either drawn them level (three) or put them ahead (nine) in the match.

    • Jeremy Doku had a hand in five of his side's six goals against Bournemouth in the reverse fixture (one goal, four assists). The most goal involvements a City player has registered against an opponent in a Premier League campaign is six – Stephen Ireland against Hull City (2008-09) and Sergio Aguero against QPR (2014-15) and against Newcastle United (2015-16).

  10. 'There is light at the end of the tunnel'published at 16:56 21 February

    Mark Mitchener
    BBC Sport journalist

    Bournemouth expert view banner

Bournemouth were left frustrated by aspects of Saturday’s draw at Newcastle, but could be cheered by a greatly improved performance.

It was certainly a novelty to discover that a Newcastle player, ruled to be in an offside position, could not only win a penalty, but also be credited with a fantasy league “assist” (despite not being involved in play).

However, it was the third time in February alone that the Cherries had drawn after leading – and remarkably, the third time this season (after games with Brentford and Aston Villa) that they had drawn 2-2 after conceding an equaliser in the 90th minute or later.

The Premier League table shows Andoni Iraola’s side close to being equidistant from the relegation zone and the European qualification places – but for those dropped points, their position could be even healthier.

However, the longer their wait for a league win in 2024 goes on (after three draws and two defeats), the greater the “winless” narrative will rumble on – and rumbling into view this Saturday come Manchester City, something of a nemesis for the Cherries.

City’s perfect record of 13 wins from 13 Premier League meetings is the best 100% record in English top-flight history.

Even outside the “Premier League era”, Bournemouth hold an unwanted record – as their all-time 19 league meetings (17 City wins and two draws) is the greatest number of times one side has faced another in the history of English league football without winning. (The previous record of 16, shared by Halifax against Cardiff and Wrexham against Crystal Palace, was broken in August 2022).

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. Assuming a regulation defeat by City on Saturday, Bournemouth then host Leicester in the FA Cup fifth round, before March delivers them back-to-back league games against the three promoted clubs (Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton) – ample opportunity to banish any pessimistic fears that their season may unravel.

  11. Remembering Mitchell published at 12:24 21 February

BBC Radio Solent's Jordan Clark and Kris Temple have been remembering the life of former Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell after he recently passed away aged 69.

He was chairman of the cherries between 2009-2013 - a time where he brought Eddie Howe back to the club and Bournemouth achieved promotion to the Championship.

BBC Radio Solent's Jordan Clark told the Cherries: Unpicked podcast: "You look at where he took over the club, and where he left it. The foundations were then in place for it to get to where it is now in the Premier League, and having established itself over two spells. You have to give him great credit for that."

Kris Temple added: "He always used to say if it wasn't going to be me that was going to take over, who else was it going to be? Because there wasn't anybody else.

"He was the one who stepped up at a time when maybe it didn't make the most business sense for him at the time. Obviously the thing he'll get most remembered for was bringing Eddie Howe back which was a bold call at the time."

Eddie Howe, helped the club get promoted in 2012 and then led them to the Championship title in the 2014-15 season before leaving the club in 2020 when they were relegated to the Championship after five seasons in the Premier League.

On Howe, Temple said: "I guess if you asked Howe now about the impact Eddie Mitchell played in his career, it's got to be a big one because that move to Bournemouth was the trampoline for Eddie to go on and achieve what he has done now."

  12. Mitchell 'instrumental' in starting Bournemouth's rise - Redknapppublished at 09:10 20 February

Harry Redknapp at a Premier League matchImage source, Getty Images

Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to former Bournemouth owner and chairman Eddie Mitchell, telling BBC Radio Solent that Mitchell was "instrumental" in the start of the club's rise from the depths of League Two to the Premier League.

Mitchell died on Saturday aged 69.

Redknapp, who played for and managed the Cherries, said: "Eddie was instrumental in all of that happening, people forget that. He doesn't get the credit he deserves, in my opinion. He did a fantastic job at Bournemouth.

"He brought Eddie Howe back to the club and that was a masterstroke. Things just took off. To see them go through the divisions, keep the club up from almost going out of business and suddenly be in the Premier League - it was an amazing turnaround. Eddie was very much a part of that."

  13. 'An important role in Bournemouth's journey' published at 18:13 19 February

    Mark Mitchener
    BBC Sport journalist

    Bournemouth expert view banner

Eddie Mitchell was, as his family's statement says, "one of a kind". Firm in his beliefs, often confrontational - even towards his own supporters - he put in place many of the building blocks for Bournemouth's eventual rise to the Premier League.

When Mitchell's consortium took over at Dean Court in 2009, it inherited a mess left by previous owners Sport-6, and while rookie manager Eddie Howe improved on-field matters despite a transfer embargo, Mitchell had to work hard to stabilise the club off the field.

Though the Cherries lost their way a little after Howe left for Burnley in 2011, Mitchell's most important contribution was when he introduced Maxim Demin to the football club later that year, having met the Russia-born petrochemicals magnate when he built a house for him in Sandbanks.

The pair spent two years as co-owners before Demin bought out Mitchell's remaining 50% stake, but by then Howe was back in the dugout for a second spell, the club were in the Championship and, financed by Demin, would go on to reach the top flight - an unthinkable step for nearly everyone involved.

While Mitchell felt hurt at the way he was treated after leaving the club, fan reaction to his passing has rightly credited him with an important role at the start of Bournemouth's 'journey' to where they are now.

We asked you for your thoughts on Saturday's Premier League match between Newcastle United and Bournemouth. Here are some of your comments...

    Newcastle fans

Mike: Another very ineffective display with so many predictable players. Longstaff again non-existent and Almiron back in his headless chicken syndrome. We lack players who can make an impact. Howe has very little to call upon from the bench and the summer transfer window will be a tipping point.

Stephen: A decent result given our catastrophic injury situation. Bournemouth will be disappointed as they missed a few chances - but so did Newcastle. If we had a fit striker, we would have won this game. Eddie Howe is doing a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances.

Geoff: They aren’t the team of last season. You cannot blame injuries either. They lose the ball too easily when passing. Don’t know what’s wrong with Burn but he’s really slowed up lately. I just wonder if the players are anxious and don’t have faith in Dubravka.

    Bournemouth fans

Tim: Good performance. Semenyo's goal was class. The game was marred by an unfathomable decision by VAR to recommend to the referee to look at a shirt pull while the ball wasn't in play! The moment the free-kick was taken the offside should have been given - as signalled by the assistant.

Stew: Great game and a great result. I keep hearing from people we should have won. Come on, a draw at St James' Park is fantastic. Kind of spooky that Ritchie got the equaliser though. Anyway onwards and upwards - Manchester City next.

Drew: What is really worrying is that the officials don't seem to understand the laws of the game. Schar is offside so that means he gets fouled so he is benefiting. Bournemouth were the better team.

Andoni Iraola during the Premier League match against Newcastle at St James' ParkImage source, Getty Images

Bournemouth are now without a win in their last six Premier League matches, but there were positives for Andoni Iraola's side in an entertaining and, at times, chaotic encounter at St James' Park.

As was the case at Fulham last weekend, the Cherries created numerous chances and will be disappointed not to have taken the lead through Dominic Solanke in the first half.

There was an element of fortune about Solanke's second-half opener - the result of a Martin Dubravka slip - but it was no less than the visitors deserved.

They were frustrated by the decision to award Newcastle a penalty seven minutes later, but Antoine Semenyo's thunderous drive 10 minutes later put Iraola's team on course for a first-ever league double over Newcastle.

Matt Ritchie had the last laugh, though, the former Cherries winger's late equaliser ensuring Bournemouth have now dropped more points from winning positions than any other top-flight team this season apart from Brentford.

Iraola's team host Manchester City in their next league game but with matches against struggling Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton in the next few weeks, they will be confident of returning to winning ways sooner rather than later.
