Kepa Arrizabalaga will be an "exciting addition" to Bournemouth's goalkeeping department, says chief executive Neill Blake.

The 29-year-old has joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea and played 20 times for Real Madrid on loan last season.

The Spanish keeper cost Chelsea £71.6m in 2018.

Speaking to the club's official website, external, Blake said: “We are delighted to bring a player of Kepa’s calibre to AFC Bournemouth.

“We were aware of his availability and were keen to take the opportunity to bring him to the club on loan.

“We believe he will be an exciting addition to our talented goalkeeping department.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on the defeat to West Ham and his frustration over Jarrod Bowen's goal: "When you think it’s impossible something else happens. It has happened again.

"It is even more clear. I don’t know what to say. We are not making these mistakes but we are suffering the consequences, and we are out of the competition because of a mistake.

"I don’t know what we have to do to change something but obviously it’s costing us a lot.

"We haven’t won on Sunday because of VAR and we are out of the cup because there is no VAR."

For the second match in a row Bournemouth were on the receiving end of a poor decision that cost them.

At the weekend, Dango Ouattara was denied a late winning goal for the Cherries in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle with a Video Assistant Referee decision ruling out the goal after the ball bounced off his shoulder.

This time, at the London Stadium, Bournemouth were hard done by because of the lack of VAR. Jarrod Bowen, who may also have been standing in an offside position, deflected in Mohammed Kudus' strike with the ball appearing to bounce off the England man's arm and past Neto.

But with no VAR in this phase of the Carabao Cup, that eliminated the Cherries, who had been the better side for large parts of the match.

The best chances had fallen to the visitors, with Marcus Tavernier hitting the post with an inswinging free-kick. He also forced a good save from Lukasz Fabianski, who also did well to keep out Ouattara's clever flick when the ball was behind him.

But Bowen's controversial winner proved the difference.

  5. When is the Carabao Cup third-round draw?published at 12:20 28 August 2024

Liverpool players celebrate winning the Carabao CupImage source, Getty Images

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday at the conclusion of the second-round tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The seven English clubs involved in European competitions this season, including holders Liverpool, will enter at the third-round stage.

Ties will take place on weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.

Because there are rounds of Champions League and Europa League fixtures also scheduled for those two midweeks, the six clubs involved in those competitions - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United - will be kept apart to ensure they can fulfil their Carabao Cup tie in the alternate midweek to their European fixture.

Those six clubs will take part in a pre-draw before Forest v Newcastle to decide if they will be at home or away in the third round, with a main draw determining the 16 ties later in the evening.

Should Chelsea progress to the next phase of the Conference League, they will not be in action in that competition again until the start of October.

  6. Recruitment team could still pull 'the odd unexpected rabbit out of a hat'published at 11:30 28 August 2024

Bournemouth have continued to fine-tune their squad before the transfer deadline, with the likelihood of more players on the move - inbound and outbound - before Friday.

In addition, it is possible that deals could be delayed until after Wednesday's Carabao Cup second-round tie at West Ham, where some fringe players are likely to be called upon.

In some instances, one deal may trigger another. At time of writing, Kepa Arrizabalaga's proposed season-long loan from Chelsea is yet to be confirmed, but the Spain international's arrival would leave the Cherries with a surfeit of senior goalkeepers.

According to conflicting media reports, Kepa's arrival would be likely to lead to a loan move away for Mark Travers (who will have plenty of Championship suitors) or even club captain Neto - with the other staying as back-up.

Bournemouth are also slightly overstocked with attacking midfielders and wingers. Hamed Traore, who has never quite nailed down a preferred position since Andoni Iraola took charge, has already joined Auxerre on loan for 2024-25, while Jaidon Anthony looks close to reuniting with ex-Cherries boss Scott Parker at Burnley.

In these days of FFP and PSR, the Clarets' reported £10m obligation to buy winger Anthony should they be promoted would be a welcome shot in the arm financially, as the sale of an academy product would be classed as "pure profit" for Bournemouth's balance sheet.

Who else could go? Chris Mepham now appears to be the fifth-choice centre-back and could seek first-team football elsewhere, while midfielder Gavin Kilkenny's long-term future most likely lies away from Vitality Stadium.

But a decision over striker Daniel Jebbison could be interesting. When the 21-year-old was signed from Sheffield United, it was with the expectation that he would be loaned out this season. However, Enes Unal's injury leaves Jebbison as the only fit out-and-out striker available as back-up for record signing Evanilson.

And if all of the above-mentioned players were to depart, it would leave Iraola a little short on numbers, so do not rule out the recruitment team pulling the odd unexpected rabbit out of a hat before Friday's deadline.

  7. Iraola on VAR, Kepa deal and Anthony exitpublished at 15:42 27 August 2024

    Nicola Pearson
    BBC Sport journalist

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been speaking to BBC Radio Solent before Wednesday's Carabao Cup second round tie at West Ham United (kick-off 19:45 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Iraola confirmed that Enes Unal, Tyler Adams and David Brooks all remain out through long-term injuries, while they will make a late call on Philip Billing who was unavailable at the weekend with a back issue.

    • After VAR controversy that ruled out a late winner against Newcastle on Sunday, he said the system "takes a lot in exchange" for making the game fairer, such as "lots of emotion", but he now wants to "try to forget" what happened.

    • On making changes for cup games: "It is more than the competition. I am just focusing on this game. We have a strong game to start with if we want to get to the next round. I will make decisions focusing on the legs of players and how they recovered for this game. We will try to win the game and continue in the competition."

    • On reports that goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is due to have a medical before completing a loan move to the club: "If we can sign him it will provide us the experience he has from playing with Chelsea, Real Madrid and the pressure that comes with playing in those kinds of games. It will add competition to the team."

    • Iraola confirmed it is "true" that Jaidon Anthony is set to leave to join Burnley, adding: "[It is a] very good deal for him personally and for the club. It looks like he can go on loan with a possible buy option also. I wish him all the best if that happens because he really deserves it."

    • On if selling academy players like Anthony is a sign of the times: "Yes, not only in our case but watching all clubs and their situations too. There are things we don't control on financial regulations and rules on homegrown players. It now looks from the outside that it affects them [other clubs] more. I don’t know if it is good for the players, personally I don't know as there are more details about these things."

    • With Hamed Traore also set to head on loan to France, the Cherries boss said they "cannot lose anymore defensive players, especially without incomings", adding: "These days, if players see these roles and they are not happy, they want to find better solutions but you have to find balance to find the right numbers and be prepared for injuries."

  8. 'Semenyo could be in for a memorable campaign'published at 12:39 27 August 2024

    Bournemouth fan's voice banner

In January 2023, when Bournemouth were struggling at the foot of the Premier League table, the then-manager Gary O’Neil and the board decided to spend a reasonable £10m on Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo.

He managed to notch his first top flight goal in a home win against Leeds, but with injuries and players in front of him in the pecking order, it really felt as if this may be a signing purely for some squad depth.

A few definitely saw the signs of potential in the Ghanaian, but many supporters were probably justified to believe he’d struggle to get ahead of Dominic Solanke up top. Plus, given we had plenty of quality in wide areas, a back-up option seemed Semenyo’s likely role.

Fast forward to the present day and Semenyo is one of the first names on the team sheet. Since the arrival of head coach Andoni Iraola, Antoine has been deployed mainly from a wide position, and he has been simply electric.

He is often found turning full-backs inside out, and his explosive pace and dribbling abilities is a joy for Cherries fans to watch. In a relatively short period of time, Semenyo has endeared himself to the Bournemouth faithful and is now firmly a fans' favourite, providing goals, assists and plenty of marauding runs to go with it.

A goal and an assist in his opening two games this season is the perfect start for a player who is now not only catching the eye of Cherries fans, but also the wider footballing world. Benefiting greatly from Iraola’s style of play, Semenyo could be in for a memorable campaign. Could he even hit double figures in terms of goals this season?

    Absolutely. Watch this space.

Bournemouth have agreed a season-long loan deal for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, subject to a medical.

The 29-year-old is travelling to the south coast for his medical after extending his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026.

The extension was put in place so Chelsea could avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of the loan deal, with his previous contract expiring next June.

The move is expected to end Bournemouth's interest in Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale and could see Mark Travers leave the club before Friday's transfer deadline.

Bournemouth forward Jaidon Anthony is having a medical with Burnley before a proposed loan move to the Championship club.

Anthony spent last season at Leeds United and helped them reach the Championship play-off final.

He had hoped to force his way into Andoni Iraola's side on his return to Bournemouth, where he has three years left on his contract.

However, the 24-year-old has been an unused substitute in both Premier League games so far and Burnley have stepped in.

  11. 'I loved what I saw'published at 15:10 26 August 2024

    EvanilsonImage source, Getty Images

Andoni Iraola said he "loved" Evanilson's performance on his Bournemouth debut on Sunday.

The former Porto man started for the Cherries in their draw against Newcastle before being taken off in the second half.

"I loved his passion," said Iraola. "He has been fighting, he was distraught he couldn't play one more minute. He didn't have more.

"It will take time to adapt to the intensity of the league, the rhythm. But I loved what I saw.

"He helped us. He was very close to scoring a couple of times. I will not judge him just because of goals. He helped us to play better and that's the main goal for everyone who starts a game."

  12. Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle - the fans' verdictpublished at 12:00 26 August 2024

    Your views banner

We asked for your thoughts after Sunday's Premier League game between Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Here are some of your comments:

    Bournemouth fans

Charl: A very good performance all round. Bournemouth deserved to win this match before the disallowed goal controversy, which was massively disappointing. Andoni Iraola needs to build the midfield around Scott and Cook - they are far too good to not play from the start or pull off during the match.

Mark: The Cherries played really well. It was an exciting game. Again, unfortunately, decisions go against us and deny the win that we deserved. VAR was meant to be helpful. We are looking at another season of wrong decisions and pitiful excuses.

Ben: That is two weeks running that we have been punished by two very marginal decisions! The Dango Ouattara goal should have stood and Joelinton should have been shown a red card. Overall, we look a threat going forward and, on the balance of play, we should have secured all three points.

Jack: Fantastic performance, shame about the result. I've not seen the disallowed goal back but it looked very harsh. Our new striker looks promising and he has a Diego Costa style of play. Semenyo was unplayable and he ran Kelly ragged. But, if it weren't for Neto in goal, we could have lost that game. Iraola's exciting brand of football has everyone purring.

    Newcastle fans

Paul: Bournemouth were the better side in the first half and, once again, Semenyo's pace caused us problems. He got the assist for their goal. We improved in the second half and Gordon got a good equaliser. We still needed VAR to deny them a win and give us the draw though. We are relieved for the point, but worried about our form, especially away from home.

Stephen: I would give Newcastle a four out of 10 for that performance. For the first 15 minutes they looked very good but, once Bournemouth woke up, Newcastle became ragged and gave the ball away too often. It was a well-worked Newcastle goal and Neto made a couple of good saves. We were lucky with the decision to not award Bournemouth's second goal. We escaped with a draw.

Ronnie: It looked like the whole team were on another planet. In the first half, we were abysmal. There were too many players missing. Things were better after the substitutes came on. Another bad day for Eddie Howe.

Bluey: We were outplayed during the game. There were little sparks here and there but nothing to really shout about. For me, it was like watching paint dry. Bournemouth were the better team, so we will take the point won't we! On to the next game.

  13. Evanilson, pressure and timepublished at 08:41 26 August 2024

    EvanilsonImage source, Getty Images

Former WSL striker Natasha Dowie says Bournemouth "have to give Evanilson time" to find his feet and settle at the club.

"They are going to miss Dominic Solanke and his goals massively, but they have his replacement in now," Dowie said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily Podcast.

"It is hard as a striker because you always want to hit the ground running and there is a lot of pressure on you as you are the one who is expected to put the ball in the back of the net.

"It can take years to build partnerships, but they will want him to find his form and get that first goal as quickly as possible. And at Bournemouth it is difficult because you are probably only going to get one or two opportunities per game, so he will have to put those opportunities away and with that comes more pressure.

"But the club will give him time. They have to give him time."

Bournemouth fans will feel they should be celebrating their first three points of the season, but instead a controversial call by the video assistant referee dominated the post-match chat.

Dango Ouattara's late goal was ruled out, with VAR deciding that the ball struck his arm rather than his shoulder, a decision that incensed Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

The Cherries boss animatedly contested the decision at the time and was no calmer in his post-match interviews.

For Iraola, it was the second poor decision by the technology in as many games, having had a goal ruled out in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in their Premier League opener.

But despite the frustration, there's positives for Bournemouth to take - their performance against Newcastle was very good and they had chances to win the game even before the late drama.

  15. Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle: What Iraola saidpublished at 17:23 25 August 2024

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been speaking to Sky Sports after VAR ruled out the Cherries' late goal: "It is very difficult to digest. It is obvious what happened. I think we should have won the game. I will complain now, nothing will happen.

"I am not against the referee, he gave the goal but he didn't have the chance to go to the monitor and watch it. If he did, I am sure he would give the goal. They will say it is a factual decision, but it is not a factual decision.

"The ball never touched his skin. We have very short sleeves so it has touched his shoulder. The referee could not do anything else, someone called him and said he had to disallow it.

"No-one will remember this in two weeks. I am very frustrated. They are telling us they will give more power to the referee. Now, I cannot do much more."

On Joelinton not being sent off for foul on goalkeeper Neto: "I don't even want to speak about this. I complain now about other things. I think why we didn't win is very clear. We didn't not win today because of this.

"I don't care if they show a red card or not, it won't change the game. What will change the game is the goal they disallowed from us."

  16. Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle: What Semenyo saidpublished at 17:11 25 August 2024

Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has been speaking to Sky Sports: "A lot happened. We have just got back in the changing room and everyone is pretty angry that the second goal didn't count. We have seen the replay and it has come off his shoulder, so I feel like the referee has made the wrong decision. But, we will take the point and continue building.

"I feel like we have been hard done by. It has hit his shoulder but we can't do anything about it now, so we have to look ahead to the next game."

"We showed our style. We like to press and make it uncomfortable for teams who come here. The plan worked well. That is my style, I like to make players uncomfortable. It is my style and I'm enjoying it."

On manager Andoni Iraola's style: "We know what he is like. He is a brave manager and we, as a team, collectively work together and make sure we are working together. We are going to continue being brave."

  17. Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle: What Tavernier saidpublished at 16:38 25 August 2024

Bournemouth goalscorer Marcus Tavernier has been speaking after the draw: "We have to be careful with what we say but there is a decision that I thought was a goal. We have to stand by it and I think we can be pleased with the performance today.

"I feel like in the first half, we were definitely on top. When they got the goal, we responded well and created that chance to get the goal and three points, but it wasn't meant to be."

On scoring his goal: "I want to try and score as many goals as I can. Now Dominic [Solanke] has left, it is up to us to score more goals. That is what we're trying to do."

On new signing Evanilson: "I think he is technically very good and, when the ball is around the box, his finishing is very good. We are expecting good things from him."

On Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto: "He is the reason we come away with a point today. A big round of applause to him for keeping the ball out of the back of the net."

Bournemouth have opened their season with two consecutive draws for the first time in the Premier League. The Cherries last started a campaign with two draws back in 2012-13 when they were in League One.
