Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick as Tottenham recovered from a goal down to thrash Burnley at Turf Moor and continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Lyle Foster finished a lovely, flowing move to give the Clarets an early lead, but Son's delicate finish restored parity 12 minutes later and the visitors never looked back.

They dominated the rest of the half and Cristian Romero's curling effort from the edge of the box completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time.

James Maddison continued his fine start to the campaign with a peach of a goal nine minutes into the second half, the former Leicester man curling beyond James Trafford after Burnley had gifted the visitors possession inside their own half.

Son side-footed past Trafford for his second of the game before completing his treble with a low strike after latching on to Pedro Porro's delightful through ball.

Josh Brownhill's neat finish pulled one back for Burnley in stoppage time, but it was no more than a consolation.

  3. Sutton's predictions: Burnley v Tottenhampublished at 11:04 2 September 2023

    Sutton's predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

His opponent for this weekend's fixtures is actor and comedian David Earl, star of new film Apocalypse Clown and Manchester United fan.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

Burnley won in the EFL Cup, a good away win against Nottingham Forest, albeit they've lost their first two league games against Manchester City and Aston Villa. They play a really attractive brand of football - that's all very well but they need points to back it up.

I don't think they'll get the points against Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham. He'll go full strength - he played a weakened side in the EFL Cup - and I think they'll edge this game.

    David's prediction: 1-2

  4. Clarets sign Genk midfielder Mike Tresorpublished at 23:13 1 September 2023

New Burnley signing Mike TresorImage source, Getty Images

Burnley have signed Belgium international Mike Tresor from Genk on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder becomes Vincent Kompany's 12th summer signing, after recently playing against the Clarets in a pre-season friendly earlier this summer.

Tresor said: "I’m feeling happy, really happy. It's deadline day but really happy to be here finally.

"The project and of course the vision of the coach here, I had a long discussion with the coach so that convinced me at the end as well to make the decision.

"I can’t wait to join the group. I’m excited to see the team play and hopefully after, join them on the field."

  5. 'At some point you have to accept defeat'published at 21:28 1 September 2023

Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has been speaking to BBC Sport about what it's like as a player when a new signing arrives in your position: "Devastated. Like if you're goalkeeper - you know full well that if you're at Crystal Palace and Dean Henderson comes in for that amount of money, you know your place has gone.

"I had it as a player at Spurs, every single transfer window I'd get back in the team but they'd keep bringing in another one, another midfielder and another midfielder and you have to be realistic. At some point you have to accept defeat that it's going to happen.

"It's a strange situation. You don't give up, you get in as good a condition as you can and you wait and you generally get an opportunity somewhere, not always but generally something comes along and you get yourself back in and win the manager over and they feel like the trust is there.

"You do need to get out at times, but some players when the window goes they feel sorry for themselves and they just down their training levels because they're not playing. But actually, that three months comes around fast."

  6. 'The manager tells you how attractive a club is'published at 19:39 1 September 2023

Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has been speaking to BBC Sport about a manager's involvement in transfers: "I think it is a well-known fact that until a position is agreed with a football club there isn't supposed to be any contact with the player, but to say that doesn't happen would be telling a lie because it happens all the time.

"The manager tells you how attractive a club is, why they want to sign you, where they want to play you and some of the top managers are best at that. They tell you how they can further your career, where they see you playing and the best ones can actually convince you to sign.

"What's difficult though is where there is a director of football totally involved and the manager has no say on choosing the players. On some occasions that can be difficult and you can see it these days where a player doesn't know if they wanted to sign them or if the manager doesn't play them and says they weren't my signing."

  7. Burnley agree Maatsen dealpublished at 15:54 1 September 2023

    Ian MaatsenImage source, Getty Images

    Alex Howell, BBC Sport

Burnley have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign left-back Ian Maatsen on loan for the season with an obligation to buy for £31.5m including add ons.

The deal will also include a sell on clause for Chelsea should Burnley sell Maatsen.

The 21-year-old had impressed Mauricio Pochettino during pre-season and the manager had spoken about the positives of Maatsen being able to play in multiple positions.

Maatsen though is yet to agree personal terms and it is understood he wants to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.

  8. 'You are putting pressure on everybody involved'published at 15:43 1 September 2023

Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has been speaking to BBC Sport about what it's like for players looking for moves on deadline day: "When it's today you are putting pressure on everybody involved, you’ll be saying 'what’s the answer? Where is it at? What is the bid? Have the clubs bid? Have they been talking? What is my new deal at the club? Is it ready? Can we agree terms? Is it a loan deal?

"It's getting very, very late now for it to start, if it's been already developing which most will, you're just praying that if you want to go you can get it done quickly. Sometimes you can be part of a package deal where you're waiting for someone else and that is the frustrating one - when you're waiting for one to leave and one to come in for your deal to happen and it's out of your control sometimes.

"There'll be certain young players today who will be looking at moves to other Premier League sides and watching other players going and thinking 'right I can get my move now', but in the meantime you're just left waiting and that can be a difficult one and it can be just too late."

  9. 'Once the big clubs start moving that's what triggers everything else'published at 14:12 1 September 2023

Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has been speaking to BBC Sport about a busy deadline day so far: "They're happening aren't they? There's a lot movement because of the amount of transfers.

"Once the big clubs start moving, that's what triggers everything else. The loans are waiting, all your leagues are waiting for the bigger clubs – the Championship, lower end of the Premier League - are all waiting to see what loans they can do and get in their side.

"That's the waiting game, but we've seen quite a lot of movement so far. There's been some big moves - Chelsea involved again which is no surprise, Villa starting to get going, what Manchester United are going to bring on the loan deals as well, so it's exciting."

  10. Incomings and outgoings at Burnley?published at 09:42 1 September 2023

    Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport

Burnley have been one of the busiest Premier League teams this summer, taking their total number of signings to 14 on Thursday night with the free transfer arrival of France Under-21 midfielder Han-Noah Massengo.

I'm told there may well be further business done on Friday by the Clarets, with a left-back and forward player high on their list of priorities.

Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen has been linked with a move back to Turf Moor, having spent last season on loan at the club and helping them win the Championship with over 100 points.

But the Dutch 21-year-old has been involved in the Blues' first-team under new manager Mauricio Pochettino so it remains to be seen whether the Argentine sanctions a move.

Another to keep an eye on is Belgium attacking midfielder Mike Tresor from Genk. The 24-year-old was the Belgian Pro League player of the year last season, scoring eight goals and providing an incredible 21 assists in 34 games.

Talks are believed to have taken place and the deal seemed to be stalling earlier in the week, but reports from Belgium late last night suggested it could have been revived and is now back on.

In terms of outgoings, some of the fringe players may be moved on but it depends on the terms offered and whether the players themselves want to go or not.

    Your Views

We asked who would make your deadline day wish list.

Here are some of your thoughts:

Mark: Sign a striker who can get us 20 goals a season and a midfielder.

Julian: A marauding left-back seems to be the missing link, as well as maybe an experienced central midfielder.

Joe: Maatsen is a must. We looked clueless on how to defend our left side against Aston Villa.

When does the transfer window close?

The transfer window will close at 23:00 BST on Friday for the Premier League and English Football League, while in Scotland, the window will shut at midnight.

Across Europe, the Bundesliga window will close at 17:00, Serie A at 19:00, Ligue 1 at 22:00 and La Liga at 23:00 but the Women's Super League transfer window remains open until 14 September.

The transfer window for the Saudi Pro League, to where a number of high-profile Premier League players have moved this summer, is set to close on 7 September.

Can a Premier League player signed on deadline day play this weekend?

Under league rules, new signings are eligible for the next Premier League game if the club submit the required documents by midday on the last working day before that match.

So any player signed after 12:00 on deadline day would be unable to play in this round of Premier League fixtures.

Where can I see all the confirmed transfer deals on deadline day?

You can find all the deals completed on transfer deadline day within our dedicated confirmed transfers page.

When does the January transfer window open?

  14. Massengo becomes Burnley's 14th summer signingpublished at 21:00 31 August 2023

    Han-Noah MassengoImage source, Getty Images

Burnley have signed central midfielder Han-Noah Massengo on a four-year deal.

The 22-year-old becomes Vincent Kompany's 14th summer signing and joins the Clarets after his contract with Bristol City expired in the summer.

After joining the club, the France Under-21 international said: "I'm feeling really good. I’ve had talks with the manager and I just wanted to come here straight away.

"The interest was there early and during the summer I just wanted to be here, I could see the manager and Club wanted me and I wanted to be a part of it. It meant a lot to me."

Massengo rose through the ranks with Monaco and made his professional debut against Club Brugge in the Champions League, where he became the first player born in the 21st century to feature in the competition.

He joined Bristol City in 2019 and made more than 100 appearances for the Robins, before a loan spell at Auxerre for the second half of last season.

  15. Burnley v Tottenham: Pick of the statspublished at 16:51 31 August 2023

    • Having lost both of their first two Premier League games of this season, Burnley could lose their opening three matches of a top-flight campaign for only a fourth time, after 1920-21, 1927-28 (first five) and 2020-21.

    • Because their game at Luton was postponed, this is Burnley's third straight home game in the Premier League this season. They are the fourth side to start a Premier League campaign with three consecutive home games, after Everton, Newcastle United and Wimbledon all did so in 1997-98.

    • Tottenham have won 10 of their 16 Premier League games against Burnley (D3 L3). However, all three such defeats against them have come in away games (May 2010, February 2019, February 2022).

    • Tottenham have kept a clean sheet in their past two Premier League games (2-0 wins v Manchester United and Bournemouth), having kept just one in their previous 14. They last recorded three consecutive shutouts in May 2022, which included a 1-0 win over Burnley.

  16. Kompany on adapting to the Premier League, transfers and Tottenhampublished at 14:32 31 August 2023

    Nat Hayward, BBC Sport

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media ahead of Saturday's Premier League match at home to Tottenham.

Here are the key lines from his press conference:

    • Kompany says there was a "cost" to last night's Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest with the club still "assessing" an injury to Vitinho. Hjalmar Ekdal has avoided "severe" injury and will instead start a "normal rehab", missing Saturday's game.

    • Kompany says his team are "showing signs of something really interesting to look forward to" despite losing their opening two Premier League games. "I still believe we can get a result against Tottenham of course," he added.

    • On the jump from Championship to Premier League: "The clubs that went up last season were successful. If you look at the three or four seasons before that though there's a lot of investment in their squads. There's a high price to have a seat at the table and we're trying to do the same. I don't think there's anything you can do in one transfer window to close the gap so hopefully we'll gel as a team to the level necessary to get the results."

    • On potential incomings: "We don't control when other clubs make their players available but if a player is available we'll always look into it. We'll see." He agrees with a journalist who says "don't rule anything out".

    • When asked if he will target leaders in the final day of the transfer window, Kompany said: "We do have leadership in the group. You have to make sure you don't have a fetish for experience and leadership because there's plenty of experienced players who went down last season. It's a case of having the right profiles and attaching character to that."

    • On Saturday's opponents Tottenham: "I've been following Ange Postecoglou for a long time. You can see his team play the same way in Japan, Celtic and now Tottenham. These managers have a very clear idea of what they want to achieve. His mentality and competitiveness is something that will eventually lead to results. I enjoy watching his teams."
