  1. Fans' view on Erol Bulut: 'Time for a change'published at 14:20 17 September

Erol Bulut chose not to face the media after Saturday's defeat at Derby County

Cardiff City fans have been giving us their views amid speculation over the future of manager Erol Bulut.

The Bluebirds boss is under pressure after failing to win a Championship game so far this season, the latest being a 1-0 defeat at Derby County.

Cardiff are currently bottom of the Championship table.

Benj: We seem to be the only club in the Championship that doesn’t know how to score goals. It’s been like this for years now. Really don’t understand what’s being coached. I’ve no idea what the solution is but it seems like Erol doesn’t either. Time for a change.

Tom Mander: What is going on behind the scenes? Where were the likes of [Callum] Robinson and [Yakou] Meite from the squad at Derby? Why [Perry] Ng off? We've lost our set-piece prowess with no [Mark] McGuinness and until we revert to either a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 and get bodies in the box, we'll continue to flounder. [Rubin] Colwill too wasteful in his passing. [Emmanouil] Siopis is not up to the physicality of the Championship.

Ivor: Erol Bulut is not to blame. Look at the real evidence. Managers changed continually. Look how Bulut rescued City from relegation to finish mid-table in his first season. It has been the selling and loaning out players since that has let City down each time. The new and cheapest latest players brought in have failed to gel. [Owner Vincent] Tan and the directors are to blame.

Ray: We can get rid of our manager, change players every couple of years, stay in the lower half of the Championship for 10 years, maybe a relegation along the way, but until you change the money men at the top that is the way it's going to be.

  2. Bluebirds fans express frustration on phone-inpublished at 15:10 16 September

Dimitrios Goutas shows his disappointment at DerbyImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

Cardiff City’s miserable start to the new Championship season ensured a number of disgruntled Bluebirds fans appeared on BBC Radio Wales’ Call Rob football phone-in over the weekend.

There was a feeling of cautious optimism before a ball was kicked this season after Cardiff handed manager Erol Bulut a new deal – eventually – on the back of a year of progress in 2023-24.

Cardiff’s summer transfer work was generally welcomed, yet a return of one point from the first five league games of this campaign has darkened the mood significantly.

Here is some of what the callers had to say:

Paul: It’s the running of the club. We signed this [Roko] Simic guy who went to Vincent Tan’s other club (Kortrijk). Erol Bulut is saying it’s nothing to do with him, it was the board. Well if the board are signing a player, what’s Erol Bulut doing?

I don’t understand why you’d run a club like that.

I just don’t know what’s going to happen. I know we’re only five games in, and we’ve got one point and conceded 10 goals. I’m worried it’s going to go deja vu again. We’re going to sack Bulut, get another manager and it’s back to deja vu again.

We need a director of football - we’ve needed a director of football for years. I know the players need to perform, but how can you perform when the club's not run well?

Anne: What I didn’t like was that at the end [at Derby County on Saturday], when the boys were coming up to clap all the fans, there was a hell of a lot of booing going on.

With Bulut he’s had his time. I know we’ve all said it’s still early in the season so let’s see, but at the minute I’m feeling really done with it. There’s no confidence in this team at the minute. There’s nothing motivating them at all.

Tony: We are definitely not a team, we’re a side not a team. It’s like these players don’t know what they’re doing in training.

Paul: Total disaster from the first game of the season. You know me, I’ve been following them a long time, and there’s something wrong. I think it’s coming from upstairs and it’s affecting the playing on the field.

You can sack the manager but that won’t solve anything. There’s something drastically not right there.

When it comes to transfers, we’ve been wanting a centre-forward ever since Steve Morrison was here.

Alan: Do you think Bulut’s the man? I don’t think so, I don’t think he’s up to Championship level. I was one of those at the end of last season, I rang in and said I think Bulut should go, definitely don’t give him a contract.

I’ve got a name for you I would like to see back managing. He knows the Championship, he did well with a low budget at Preston, and that’s Ryan Lowe.

Dai: We should get rid of [Ken] Choo, [Mehmet] Dalman and [Vincent] Tan. We haven’t been a successful club since 2018. We’ve got to keep Erol Bulut.

If you get rid of the manager, then all of Erol Bulut’s players, the new manager might not like them, and we’ll be back to square one with a revolving door.

Rhys: It’s groundhog day isn’t it? You might as well just record this programme and play it cyclically every six months.

  3. What's gone wrong for Cardiff? Bluebirds fans, have your saypublished at 11:58 16 September

Have your say graphicImage source, BBC Sport

Cardiff City's miserable start to the Championship season continued as they were beaten 1-0 at Derby County on Saturday.

There was optimism in the summer about the campaign ahead on the back of Cardiff's progress under Erol Bulut last season, plus the club's close-season recruitment work.

But that positivity has rapidly disappeared on the back of a sorry run to open up 2024-25.

Cardiff have taken only one point from their first five league games, with their solitary Championship goal so far securing that draw in the derby at Swansea City.

The Rams defeat came after losses against Middlesbrough, Burnley and Sunderland.

There has already been some media speculation about Erol Bulut's future, with the pressure on going into next weekend's home game against Leeds United.

What do you think? What is going wrong at Cardiff? Where can the side improve? Should Erol Bulut be given time to turn his team's fortunes around?

Erol Bulut opted against speaking to the media following Cardiff City's 1-0 defeat at Derby County.

  6. Fish an option as Bulut ponders changespublished at 17:35 13 September

Cardiff City defender Will FishImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester United defender Will Fish is set to come into contention as Cardiff manager Erol Bulut fulfils his promise to ring the changes for Saturday’s clash with Derby County, at Pride Park.

Fish, 21, was signed just before the transfer deadline for a fee which could rise to £3m with add-ons.

The centre back has yet to feature in the Cardiff squad this term.

But the Bluebirds are without Norwegian defender Jesper Daland, who is still recovering from a leg injury which forced him off just before the interval of the 2-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough in Cardiff's last game before the international break.

Experienced Greek international Dimitrios Goutas was Daland’s replacement against Boro, but manager Erol Bulut has confirmed Fish will be an option available to him.

“He can also be with us, he trained fully with us. When we need him he will be there,” said the Cardiff boss.

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey will be another absentee at Pride Park, having returned from international duty with a hamstring issue.

But, more positively for Bulut, Cardiff club captain Joe Ralls is available again after a hip problem which has sidelined the midfielder since the 5-0 defeat at Burnley, on 17 August.

Even without the injury problems, Bulut had vowed to make changes as he looks to belatedly kick-start Cardiff’s Championship campaign.

Cardiff are bottom of the table, winless in the league with just one point and one goal scored in four Championship games.

Immediately after the defeat by Middlesbrough, Bulut insisted he would change his line-up in search of the elusive first league win.

And the international break has not diminished his desire to take decisive action on his starting XI.

He said: “There will be some changes. On Saturday you will see it. I have to do something.

“We've had four games, it's good to have the control we had, but if you don't win a game and you don't score many goals how it should be, then you have to change something.

“I think it was enough games for many players who played from the start and now there has to be some changes to see some other players if they can deliver what we expect.”

  7. Bulut pays tribute to 'great' Bamba published at 13:19 13 September

Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut has added to the tributes to former Bluebirds star Sol Bamba.

The Ivory Coast defender, who had been working as technical director at Adanaspor in Turkey, died a fortnight ago, at the age of just 39.

Derby County and Cardiff will honour Bamba before the two sides meet in a Championship encounter at Pride Park on Saturday, while players on both sides will wear black armbands.

Bamba is a former Cardiff captain and had a spell training with Derby in 2016.

Bulut's time in Wales did not coincide with Bamba’s but the Cardiff manager said: “I know him as a player from Trabzonspor, I met him also last season when we started.

“Great guy, great character and I met him a few times. We talked a little bit. A really, really good person. As a player [he] was also a great one.”

He added: “Of course, for Cardiff City fans he's one of the best players. He was very good with the fanbase.

"When I read about that, I got a shock. I thought something was wrong so I was calling a few friends I know in Turkey.

“He was 39 years old. It comes too quick. It hurts. It hurts.”

  8. Phillips among familiar foes at Derbypublished at 10:13 13 September

Had things worked out differently, Nat Phillips would have been in the away dressing room at Pride Park this Saturday.

Phillips impressed while on loan at Cardiff in the second half of last season, making 18 appearances – and scoring once – after joining from Liverpool in January.

After that successful spell, the Bluebirds were keen to re-sign Phillips for the 2024-25 campaign, but they will instead find themselves lining up against the centre-back this weekend.

Cardiff ultimately looked elsewhere in their search for defensive reinforcements, with Calum Chambers signing from Aston Villa, Jesper Daland arriving from Cercle Brugge and Will Fish joining from Manchester United.

Phillips, meanwhile, was linked with a permanent move to Turkish club Trabzonspor, who reportedly saw a £4m offer for the 27-year-old turned down by Liverpool.

After a summer of uncertainty, he ended up leaving Anfield on loan once again, with a move to Derby County completed on deadline day.

He will be available to Rams boss Paul Warne for the first time when Cardiff visit this weekend.

Ebou Adams is also set to feature against his old club after completing a permanent move from Cardiff to Derby over the summer, while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Curtis Nelson could also face their former employers.

Gambia midfielder Adams and wide player Mendez-Laing, of Guatemala, have both been declared fit to feature by Derby boss Paul Warne having been away during the international break.

  9. Banned Bulut will watch Derby game 'like a fan'published at 16:02 12 September

Erol BulutImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

Manager Erol Bulut says he will watch Saturday’s Championship match away to Derby County “like a fan”.

Bulut was handed a one-match touchline ban after an incident in Cardiff’s 1-1 Championship draw at Swansea City last month.

He has called the ban “unfair” but has to comply.

Bulut said: “I will be in the directors' box. Like a fan I will watch the game, thanks to referees.”

Asked about the punishment, Bulut said: “I think it was unfair that I got a red card without doing anything. I didn't touch anybody, I didn't say any bad words against anybody.

“I get touched and pulled, nobody from the opposition gets punished... the rules have maybe changed - you don’t touch anybody you get a red card, if you touch anybody you get nothing.”

Bulut said he submitted his views to the Football Association but had not expected to escape punishment.

However, the Cardiff manager is allowed to remain in contact with his coaches on the touchline.

In his absence last season, his long-time assistant Nicholaos Karydas took the helm in the technical area.

After the Swansea game, Bulut's media duties were covered by former Watford coach Omer Riza, who has been part of Bulut's staff since the summer.

Bulut said: “We will all be together on the phone. So I will try to help my guys from the directors' box.”

Bulut says watching from the directors’ box means he will have to refrain from his usual animated approach when on the touchline.

He said: “I'm a person who is always active. I have to control myself for sure [in the stands].”

  10. A busy international break - for somepublished at 11:14 12 September

Manolis Siopis in action for Greece this weekImage source, Getty Images

Cardiff City’s midfield have put in some work over the international break, with Manolis Siopis joining Aaron Ramsey in playing twice for his country.

Having played 25 minutes as a substitute in Greece’s 3-0 win over Finland last Saturday, Siopis racked up another 88 minutes of game time as the Greeks won 2-0 against the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday.

Ramsey has had more recovery time ahead of Cardiff’s Championship trip to Derby County on Saturday, as Wales’ second game of the international break was in Montenegro on Monday.

The 33-year-old played only the final 10 minutes in Niksic, having lasted 72 minutes in the draw with Turkey last Friday.

Andy Rinomhota, who is yet to feature in the league this season but has made two EFL Cup appearances for Cardiff, played throughout two AFCON qualifiers for Zimbabwe – goalless draws with Kenya and Cameroon.

For the remainder of Cardiff’s international contingent, there was plenty of travelling but not much game time.

Callum Robinson played only six minutes of the Republic of Ireland’s defeat to Greece, while Callum O’Dowda sat on the bench throughout. Both players were unused substitutes in the loss to England last weekend.

USA goalkeeper Ethan Horvath went to Kansas, for a 2-1 loss to Canada, and then Ohio, where the Americans drew 1-1 with New Zealand, but did not make it off the bench in either friendly.

Rubin Colwill saw no action with Wales, while Jesper Daland did not feature for Norway after suffering an ankle injury.

Perry Ng has also been away, with Singapore, though that was only to take part in a training camp.

  11. Derby and Cardiff to honour Bambapublished at 11:00 11 September

Derby County and Cardiff City will stage a minute of applause before Saturday’s Championship match to pay tribute to former Bluebirds captain Sol Bamba.

Bamba, who had been working as technical director at Adanaspor in Turkey, died last week at the age of 39.

Bamba had a spell training with Derby in 2016 and both clubs will wear black armbands as a mark of respect, with the minute of applause preceding kick-off.

The former Cardiff, Leeds United and Hibernian defender overcame non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 but died last month in Turkey after being admitted to hospital.

The Ivory Coast defender - who also had spells with clubs including Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Dunfermline Athletic - won promotion with Cardiff in the 2017-18 season.

  12. Ex-Bluebird Halford on the move again published at 14:45 10 September

Greg Halford in action for CardiffImage source, Huw Evans Agency

Former Cardiff City defender Greg Halford has switched clubs again.

Halford, now 39, has joined Blyth Spartans, meaning he has now chalked up more than 20 moves in his long career.

The Chelmsford-born player had an 18-month spell at Cardiff City, joining in January 2017.

Halford was part of Neil Warnock’s outfit which gained promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

He left the club after his contract expired that summer having 33 appearances and scored one goal.

Halford began his professional career at Colchester United, making his debut in April 2003.

His versatility – he has operated as a right-back, centre-back, in midfield and even as a striker – has ensured he has attracted £7m of transfer fees during his nomadic football existence.

There were notable moves to Reading, Sunderland and Wolves, while he also played more than 70 league games for Nottingham Forest.

His football journey has taken him from step one to step seven in the FA pyramid and to Aberdeen in Scotland and Waterford in Ireland.

After dropping out of the EFL, he helped Hashtag United win the Isthmian League Northern Division.

Now he will look to add to his 500-plus career appearances with Northern Premier League club Blyth.
