  1. Sutton's predictions: Newcastle v Crystal Palacepublished at 09:19 16 April

    Sutton's predictions graphic

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had a really tough time and the most important thing is that he makes a speedy recovery from his illness.

His players put in a performance to make him proud in Sunday's win over Manchester United, and I can see them doing the same again here.

The Magpies have won four games in a row and, with a top-five place in their sights, I just can't see past them winning this one too on current form, especially at home.

It will be close though. Crystal Palace have picked up more points on the road this season than they have at Selhurst Park, and they caused Manchester City plenty of problems early on at the weekend.

City fought back well to win after going 2-0 down, but we saw how Palace's plan worked early on and how dangerous they are on the break.

They will do the same thing this time, with their wing-backs picking their moments to spring forward, and they will certainly pose a threat even if Newcastle have most of the ball.

I think Palace will score, but Newcastle are going to be hard to keep out.

I've always been a fan of Harvey Barnes and, with his competition with Anthony Gordon on the left flank, and Jacob Murphy on the other side, they have got lots of firepower alongside Alexander Isak.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  2. Newcastle v Crystal Palace: Did you know?published at 08:36 16 April

Since 14 December, Newcastle have won more games than any other Premier League side (18 of 23) and their tally of 53 goals is only behind Liverpool (61) and Manchester City (58) in that time.

Crystal Palace have won just one of their past seven Premier League games against Newcastle - a 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park in April last year.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have scored in their past 13 league matches. Only twice in their top-flight history have they scored in 14 in a row, doing so between August-November 1979 and May-October 1991.

We asked for your views on Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes signing a new contract until the summer of 2027 and whether it was the right by decision by the club.

Here are some of your comments:

Josh: A few years ago, we would have huffed and puffed with him staying at the club, but now he's one of our best midfielders and probably undroppable. Very happy he's staying.

George: Great to see Will Hughes extend his contract. He has been outstanding this season and is an unsung hero. He keeps the midfield safe while the creative players do their stuff.

Ray: Hughes is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League. Could so easily have played at international level, but by never playing for a top-six club, he was never going to get a chance.

Theo: Great for us. Powerhouse in midfield and Palace cult hero! So glad he put the pen to paper for another two years.

Paul: Hughes has turned into a solid pro and his work rate is phenomenal. Last of the old school tacklers which gets him booked bit too often - but it's a contact sport, so come on! Very happy he has committed for a few more years as we love him at Palace.

Nick: He's become essential to our midfield. You know if it needs shaking up, Hughes is the man to do it. Glad he has a new contract.

Steve: Great news. He has been good since he joined, but in the last 12-18 months he has gone up a level or two, especially in transition.

  4. Glasner on team news, best wishes to Howe and Hughes' 'fighting spirit'published at 15:31 15 April

    Millie Sian
    BBC Sport journalist

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Wednesday's Premier League game against Newcastle United (kick-off 19:30 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Glasner said: "Matt Turner is back, Romain Esse is back, Eddie [Nketiah] and Marc [Guehi] are back after their suspensions, so it is good to have all players available."

    • Palace have "accepted and analysed" the 5-2 defeat by Manchester City, but "sometimes football is a little bit weird". He added: "We conceded 40 goals in 31 games, but we conceded 10 of those goals in two games. We weren't at our top level in our defensive structure, but that happens."

    • There might be a little bit of rotation because of the short turnaround between fixtures this week, but the Eagles will be "going all in and going for a win".

    • He watched Newcastle's 4-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday and is preparing to face a "very powerful" team with "a lot of energy".

    • On Magpies manager Eddie Howe, who is currently in hospital recovering from pneumonia, he said: "I'm sending my best wishes. I hope he recovers very well and very quickly. I love the way he manages his teams. They play with intensity, passion, enthusiasm and quality."

    • When asked how he will pick his starting XI to face the Magpies, he responded: "They are a great team. I have to find the right players who can compete with their high intensity and lots of sprints."

    • It is "important to enjoy" still being in the running for European football this season, either through the Premier League or the FA Cup. Glasner added: "I think we are in one of the best situations in Crystal Palace history. It's mid-April now and we aren't having to look at what's happening behind us."

    • Will Hughes signing a contract extension until June 2027 "wasn't a surprise" for him. He praised the midfielder for his contribution this season, adding: "He is a more old-school guy, who talks with all the others and gives a very good energy in the locker room. Also his football, passing and fighting spirit are great."

  5. 'A leader on and off the pitch' - Hughes signs new deal until 2027published at 13:28 15 April

    Will HughesImage source, Getty Images

Midfielder Will Hughes has signed a new contract to remain at Crystal Palace until the summer of 2027.

Since joining in the summer of 2021 from Watford, the 29-year-old has played more than 100 games, including 32 appearances this season.

Hughes told the club website:, external "I'm extremely happy to sign a new contract.

"I've really enjoyed my time here, so I'm delighted to extend it by a couple of years in what's a really good moment as an individual and as a team collectively."

Chairman Steve Parish added: "In addition to being an important player in our squad, Will exemplifies the hard work, humility - and humour - of our football club.

"He is a leader both on and off the pitch - a characteristic appreciated by both his team-mates and supporters alike - and I am delighted to see him extend his time in red and blue."

  6. Palace 'struck gold' with 'transformative' Munozpublished at 12:28 15 April

It has been slightly over a year since Daniel Munoz arrived at Crystal Palace and it is challenging to think of a more transformative player from a system standpoint in recent years.

Despite arriving at the tail end of Roy Hodgson's time at the club, the managerial switch to Oliver Glasner, with a wing-back-reliant formation, has meant the Colombian has been paramount to the team's success down the right-hand side ever since.

Munoz may not be the pure technician that some of his other Premier League peers at wing-back. However, as a tireless athlete, he still has tools to unlock opposition teams - having notched four goals and four assists just in league matches this season.

Palace have struck gold with his move from Genk, having only paid about £6.5m for an almost certain starter while paying him one of the lower salaries in the first team.

Given his age - he turns 29 in May - speculation of his future this summer seemed inevitable, with a suggested release clause in his contract and a smaller window to cash in on his sudden rise in global reputation as a player.

However, with The Athletic reporting, external that he has agreed to new terms, summer uncertainty may have been squashed and it has rewarded him in the short term.

Only one outfield player, Marc Guehi, has played more minutes than Munoz in the league this season, which speaks to the defender's workload before you even factor in the distance he covers per 90 minutes.

The club only has Nathaniel Clyne in reserve, who is stylistically a far more defensive player. While Palace recently announced a new deal with Caleb Kporha, their youth prospect in Munoz's position, the gap between the Colombian and the next man up is vast.

The team should realistically be in the market for a back-up in the summer, but at least for now, they appear to have secured a key man for next season.

  7. Man City 5-2 Crystal Palace - the fans' verdictpublished at 09:50 14 April

Nico O'Reilly scores for Manchester CityImage source, Getty Images

We asked for your views on Manchester City's Premier League win against Crystal Palace.

Here are some of your comments:

    Man City fans

Kevin: Great turn around after being two goals down, brilliant determination from every single player involved today but De Bruyne was outstanding. Brilliant result without key players and our youngsters stepped up today, it's reassuring to know we have them for the future.

Derek: The best I have seen them play for many a week. Back to their old selves.

Monksie: Never in doubt once City scored their first. Despite the continuing plague of injuries to key players that has maimed our season this was a reminder of how good City can still be when they really get the bit between their teeth. Five different scorers, too - and so good to see Nico O'Reilly amongst them.

    Crystal Palace fans

Bob: Fantastic start, could have been three up if Eze had timed his run better. There was no reason for Kamada to dive in and give away a silly free-kick. Do not understand why Glasner continues to start him, he is just not good enough.

James: After pressing hard in the first 30 minutes, Palace let City take the upper hand and allowed them too much time on the ball. City free kick shouldn't have found a way through and Henderson made a dog's breakfast of his efforts to stop City's fourth. The bright bits were good and let's hope the result doesn't dwell with the boys.

John: Hollow performance having started well the loss of Guehi for this match highlighted how important he is to the team letting in five goals is a reality check. Hope it is a one off.

  8. 'The last time we conceded five we went on a great run afterwards'published at 14:59 12 April

Oliver Glasner managing Crystal PalaceImage source, Getty Images

Oliver Glasner spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Crystal Palace's defeat against Manchester City: "The defeat really hurts because when you're up by two and scoring the third we had a fantastic start. But we conceded the goals too easily. We didn't defend at our top level so we can do this better. A team like Man City will punish it. We were not on our top level today defending and that's why we conceded too many goals."

On whether conceding five surprised him: "Maybe there are a few reasons. Maxence didn't train the whole week. I think everybody else can do it better.

"Of course on the other side we have to accept City are a top team. When you are not at your top level they can always find the gaps and they are able to score a goal. Especially after their first they got quicker in they head and after the second they had their rebound. I think after the first goal it was tough.

"The players did their best but we will learn from this game. When you play a team like City you have to be in your top level in defence."

"The last time we conceded five was against Arsenal before Christmas and then we had a great run. We will analyse this again and then train. In four days we have the chance to do it better against Newcastle and this is what we'll go for."

Chris Richards scores for Crystal PalaceImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace have scored goals 15 from set pieces in the Premier League this season (excl. penalties) – the most of any side. It is the Eagles' most set-piece goals across a single season in the competition since 2015-16 (also 15).

  10. Sutton's predictions: Man City v Crystal Palacepublished at 11:09 12 April

    Sutton's predictions graphic

Crystal Palace are a really well-balanced team who can cause Manchester City all sorts of problems with their 3-4-3 formation, even though Marc Guehi and Eddie Nketiah are suspended after being sent off against Brighton last week.

The Eagles are in better form than Pep Guardiola's side too, with four wins and a draw from their past five league games - City have only won twice in the same period.

I still cannot move away from a City win, however. I still expect them to win these kind of games at home, even if they are miles away from being the team they were 12 months ago.

We saw more evidence of that last week, because Sunday's Manchester derby was probably the dullest derby game I have ever watched.

You think about when Guardiola came over, and how he transformed the game. For years, City were so watchable.

Now, if they were playing in my back garden I would close the curtains - although that would be a bit harsh on Palace.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  12. Semi-automated offsides a 'step in right direction' but take 'with a pinch of salt'published at 11:07 12 April

    Nedum Onuoha, BBC Sport columnist

There are lots of different perspectives in terms of how you watch a game of football, and I think for the majority of time the people in the stadium get the best atmosphere, but the worst views of how a game has actually gone.

You don't really get the chance to see multiple replays and have discussions about things, because you just get caught up in the moment.

With the incoming semi automated offsides, they did promise it earlier in the season - but I think the caveat was they're only going to do it when it's ready.

It is a positive that they didn't do it when it wasn't ready.

One upside to to the new technology is some of the arguments disappear. Previously you could say 'but it looks like it's this to me' or 'it looks like it's that to me'. When it is presented now, there aren't many people that will then be looking at the animation, going back to the video, and then going down a proper conspiracy rabbit hole.

So, it ends more arguments, not all arguments, but more arguments.

I think people, as a consequence, will be more accepting of it.

But, I still do believe that there's things for people to understand, because it can't be used in every situation. There are certain decisions which can still be a little bit more complex, and there's certain times where human intervention will still need to be brought in.

I wouldn't say it's as clear as, say, goal line technology, but it's a step in the direction to where most people feel more comfortable accepting the outcome and the speed of it as well will be encouraged.

It's not to say that it's going to be instant. If you believe this is going to be perfect, and always extremely fast, ask yourself, why do you think that?

Unless somebody has told you that from PGMOL, then take it with a pinch of salt and you see how it goes.

I think it's something that many people have seen before so hopefully there will be fewer arguments.

But, because it's football, there'll always be something to argue about the end of the day.

  14. Glasner on team news, 'amazing finisher' Marmoush and Man Citypublished at 15:14 11 April

    Tyrese King
    BBC Sport journalist

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City (kick-off 12:30 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Maxence Lacroix is available despite being withdrawn as a concussion substitute against Brighton. Glasner also confirmed the return of Chris Richards after missing the past two games with a calf injury.

    • Romain Esse and Matt Turner will both miss the game against the reigning Premier League champions with sickness, but should be available for the midweek fixture against Newcastle.

    • Glasner said Palace "have huge respect for Manchester City", adding: "It's a great team with one of the best managers in the last decade in the Premier League but we approach with confidence and our goal isn't to go away unbeaten but to win the game."

    • On what he expects from City: "A possession-based team, who have a clear structure in their game. Normally Pep plays with high and wide wingers but against Manchester United he played a 4-4-2 diamond with two strikers and Kevin de Bruyne more as a number 10, so I don't know exactly but we are prepared."

    • On "amazing finisher" Omar Marmoush, who Glasner previously worked with at Wolfsburg: "He has the skills and what I loved was he was two and a half years in Germany and he spoken German perfectly and this is quite unusual."

    • He continued: "He is a great guy, has all the skills and in the football career you may not have to make a straight direction to come to the top but he had a loan at St Pauli, Stuttgart, then performing for Wolfsburg, then an outstanding season for Frankfurt. Immediately he shows Manchester [City] what kind of striker he is. I'm really pleased for him but not tomorrow."
