A bad day at the office for all involved as St Mirren romp to a 3-0 victory over Nick Montgomery's side.

  2. Hibernian 0-3 St Mirren: What the manager saidpublished at 17:56 3 February

Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery tells BBC Scotland: "I apologise to the fans for that first half. The lack of competing, the lack of fight. They outfought us. We deserved what we got today - and that was nothing.

"We accept responsibility as a collective. That was not good enough. We lacked fight and desire. I think second half we could have got a goal or two back but it wasn't to be. That was nowhere near the performance I expect or the level of performance the players can deliver.

"There's been a lot of change, a busy week with a lot of new players coming in. Did I think it was going to click straight away? No."

  3. Hibernian 0-3 St Mirren: Analysispublished at 17:40 3 February

    Cam Wanstall, BBC Sport Scotland

The only silver lining for Hibs was the performance of debutant Moriah-Welsh, who proved better than the ten outfielders who started the game. However, the other new faces failed to endear themselves to the Easter Road faithful.

It is not harsh to say that Hibs looked utterly hopeless in all facets of their play in the first half, with their failure to complete medium-length passes, lift crosses into the air or beat their opposition in the air inside their own box costing them.

The hapless Hibs attack failed to take a single shot in the first half. And even after taking aim on occasion immediately after the interval, there was a 30-minute period of the second 45 where the hosts failed to test Zach Hemming.

  4. Three changes; Triantis makes debutpublished at 14:26 3 February

Nick Montgomery makes three changes from last weekend's draw versus Kilmarnock, with a debut handed out to one of Hibs' three deadline day arrival.

As expected, Sunderland loanee Nectarios Triantis fills in for veteran defender Paul Hanlon - who remains out through illness.

Myziane Maolida starts following his late leveller last Saturday at Rugby Park, while Rory Whittaker replaces for fellow youngster Kanayo Megwa at right-back.

  6. 'Optimistic we'll move onwards and upwards'published at 12:27 3 February

    Your views graphic

We asked for your thoughts on Hibs' January transfer business, after three loanees arrived on deadline day.

Here's a taste of what you had to say:

Allan: Can’t be disappointed with the window. Players that have come in already look stronger than the players that have departed. In addition to players returning from internationals and injury, now is the time for Hibs to push on for that European spot and a Scottish Cup run. Starting to see players that Monty wants but it's still early in his tenure.

Colin: Phase one of re-shaping the squad complete. Some good signings and we've now got cover and competition in all positions. Phase two in the summer should complete the squad changes, with the inclusion of our best young prospects. Optimistic we'll move onwards and upwards.

John: On paper it appears as if the new players will prove their worth and should bring competition for places each week. However, most are around 20 and relatively inexperienced. Hopefully with added competition the defence will be much stronger.

Mark: For the umpteenth time, we have failed to sign the proven, experienced defenders that we need. A lot of signings, and as per usual a lot of random young players. What message does that sound out to our young academy players?

Scott: On the whole, it looks like a decent transfer window. The squad has been strengthened in areas like central defence, where it has been badly needed for a while. Marcondes looks like a good acquisition and I’m happy to see the club shed the likes of Jeggo, McKirdy and Doidge who simply weren’t the calibre of player that should be at Hibs.

Kenny: Montgomery is simply filling the team with young players on loan. We need players in for the long term. All it means that we are back to square one at the end of the season. He also said it’s hard to win games. That tells me the team's not good enough. The job is too big for Montgomery.

  7. Heartache for Miller as Australia exit Asian Cuppublished at 19:34 2 February

Hibs forward Martin Boyle started, while defender Lewis Miller came off the bench as Australia were knocked out of the Asian Cup in the quarter-finals by South Korea.

Australia took the lead in the first half when Nathan Atkinson's cross was volleyed home by Craig Goodwin.

However, Hwang Hee-chan levelled from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time after Miller's rash challenge on Son Heung-min.

The Tottenham star then curled in a delightful free-kick in extra time following another foul from Miller on the edge of the box to send Jurgen Klinsmann's side through.

  8. Montgomery delighted with 'healthy' January windowpublished at 16:48 2 February

Hibs boss Nick MontgomeryImage source, SNS

Nick Montgomery is delighted to have more quality and competition within his Hibs squad following a busy January window.

Owen Bevan, Nectarios Triantis and Eliezer Mayenda all came in on loan on deadline day, following Nathan Moriah-Welsh, Luke Amos, Myziane Maolida and Emiliano Marcondes in making the move to Easter Road.

Speaking to the media before their game against St Mirren on Saturday, Montgomery says the new arrivals will be hugely important.

"It was very busy [the window] but also healthy in terms of bringing in quality players," he said.

"I feel we now have competition for places which is something I spoke about during the season that is very hard when we have a real stretched squad.

"But that is seven out and seven in and I think those seven are really going to contribute between now and the end of the season.

"Every player that has gone out has gone out on good terms and I think the players that have come in, from big clubs, playing at a high level, with a point to prove and wanting to get minutes.

"The most important thing is that they really wanted to come to Hibernian.

"They had many different options but being able to speak to them and explain the style of play and the club, them seeing the fans and the passion and the history of the club really did help in convincing them to come in."

  9. Montgomery on 'healthy' January business, Hanlon's absence and preparing for the summerpublished at 15:18 2 February

Hibs boss Nick MontgomeryImage source, SNS

Nick Montgomery has been speaking to the media ahead of Hibs' game against St Mirren on Saturday.

    Here are the key points:

    • Montgomery said he's happy with the side's "healthy" January business and feels he has more strength in depth in key positions.

    • He added that he's very confident in the players that have been brought in, understands the fans want "instant success" but says it's not easy to win games.

    • He's proud of where the team is at present and feels he's got a squad that can compete from now until the end of the season.

    • Paul Hanlon is still out with illness so new signing Nectarios Triantis will be thrown straight into the squad for tomorrow.

    • Acknowledged that "football never stops" and they're already preparing for summer window.

    • Shared his excitement at getting his international players back and admitted that it's been a tough period without them.

  11. 'Powerful' Mayenda completes Hibs' business published at 23:17 1 February

Sunderland forward Eliezer Mayenda has joined Hibs on a season-long loan deal.

The 18-year-old moved to the English Championship side from French outfit Sochaux B in the summer, and has made eight appearances for the club.

On his new signing, Nick Montgomery said: “Eliezer is a player we’ve been monitoring and once the interest came in for Harry, we had a list of potential replacements on our recruitment list.

"With only a few hours remaining we spoke to Sunderland, and I had a phone call with the player and club. He had a few options on the table and after a discussion with his representatives, he decided he would like to join us until the end of the season.

“He’s a powerful, attacking player with lots of energy, who can play both central and wide.

“At 18, he’s already played Championship football and is highly regarded at Sunderland with a big future ahead of him. He will complete our recruitment for January and add more depth and attacking options to the squad.”

  12. McKirdy returns to Swindon on loan published at 23:02 1 February

    Harry McKirdyImage source, SNS

Harry McKirdy has re-joined Swindon Town on loan until the end of the season as the Hibs striker looks to regain match fitness.

The 26-year-old has made 26 appearances for the Easter Road club, but has so far failed to open his account.

McKirdy previously scored 23 goals in 44 games for the Robins in the 2021/22 campaign.

Hibs boss Nick Montgomery said: “Harry has worked very hard to get back on the pitch and after everything he has been through, he is now in a good place.

“When the interest came for Harry, we had a good conversation and we felt that it would be a good opportunity for him to get more game-time than what was potentially on offer here.

“With players coming back from international duty and injuries, this gives Harry the opportunity to push on and to come back at the end of the season with minutes under his belt at a club he is really comfortable at, and grow in confidence with each game."

  13. Bevan brings 'great attributes and fantastic attitude' published at 19:57 1 February

    Owen BevanImage source, SNS

Nick Montgomery says Bournemouth loanee Owen Bevan will bring "depth and competition for places" in the Hibs rearguard.

"Our relationship with Bournemouth allowed us to look closely at their young players, and Owen was one that stood out instantly," the manager said.

"Having watched him during his loan spell at Cheltenham Town earlier this season, I was really keen to try and bring him in for the second half of this season.

"Owen is a young centre-back with great attributes and a fantastic attitude.

"He can play either side as a centre-back and at right-back, which provides us with great depth and competition for places. We look forward to working with him."

Hibs have added another young defender to their ranks as Bournemouth centre-back Owen Bevan joins on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old becomes Nick Montgomery's third arrival from The Cherries this window, with Emiliano Marcondes and Nathan Moriah-Welsh also moving to the capital on a temporary basis.

Bevan spent the first half of the campaign on loan at League One Cheltenham Town, but was recalled after an injury.

He made his Premier League debut for Bournemouth at Anfield in 2022, coming off the bench in a 9-0 defeat to Liverpool.

    Brian McLauchlin, BBC Sport Scotland

The focus has certainly been on who Nick Montgomery will bring in to strengthen what at times has been a patchwork defence.

The addition of Australian under-23 international Nectarios Triantis will be music to the ears for Hibs fans.

The fact he is likely to be joined later by the Bournemouth defender Owen Bevan will also help ensure stiff competition for starting places.

It’s been a strange window for the Easter Road club with a lot of speculation regarding the investment by Bournemouth owner Billy Foley.

The next few months now will all be about trying to ensure a European spot for next season and a fairly strong summer of change will no doubt happen in Leith.

  17. Triantis eyeing silverware with Hibs published at 18:24 1 February

    Nectarios Triantes Image source, SNS

Nectarios Triantes has his eyes on lifting the Scottish Cup with Hibs after joining on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old reunites with Nick Montgomery, having worked under the Englishman at Australian outfit Central Coast Mariners.

“I am really excited to be here," the centre-back said. "It hasn’t been a long time coming but it has been in the works for a while now so I am delighted to be here now and really excited to get started.

“The team, the Gaffer, the way that Hibs play were all big parts of my reason to come here.

“I know a lot about how the team play through my time in Australia playing under Monty and Sergio (Raimundo).

"I had an amazing time at Central Coast, it was my debut season playing professional football, so to win silverware in that year was amazing and it has given me that hunger to achieve more.

“The Gaffer and I spoke together and he showed me his visualisation for the rest of the season. Of course, we want to try to win the Scottish Cup and do as well as we can in the league between now and the end of the season.”

  18. Hibs sign centre-back Triantis on loan from Sunderlandpublished at 17:30 1 February

    TriantisImage source, Hibernian FC

Hibs have secured a deal for Sunderland centre-back Nectarios Triantis on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old has worked with Nick Montgomery before, during his time at Central Coast Mariners, and has been capped by Australia at under-23 level.

Triantis has made just three first-team appearances for Sunderland since signing from Mariners in the summer, and heads north of the border in search of regular minutes.

“Nectar is a young player that I know very well from my time in Australia," Montgomery said. "I signed him for the Mariners and gave him his A-League debut as I saw huge potential in him.

“He was a mainstay in our Championship-winning team before joining Sunderland in the summer. Although he might not have played much this summer, when he has featured, he’s performed well.

“We have been chasing Nectar for some time, and although we thought he’d remain at Sunderland, circumstances changed last night, and we made a move to bring him to Hibs. He adds to the quality we’ve already brought in during this window.”
