Ipswich Town saw late night negotiations for Chelsea striker Armando Broja and Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson collapse.
A deal could not be struck between Ipswich and Chelsea on revised terms in the Suffolk club's favour after a medical following a previous deal for Broja revealed a foot injury.
There was caution around locking in a loan with obligation to buy for £30m amid a potential issue that needed rehabilitation for the Albania international.
Nelson, meanwhile, looked set to move to make room for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling ahead of his proposed loan move to Arsenal.
But Fulham have successfully hijacked the deal at the final hour as they looked to sign a winger before the transfer deadline.

Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath did not travel for the upcoming fixture away at Cardiff amid transfer interest from Ipswich.
The feeling on Teesside is that the Ivorian, 25, is trying to force a move through to the newly-promoted Premier League side after an initial bid was rejected.
However, the Tractor Boys remain interested in Chelsea striker Armando Broja which is currently believed to be the priority deal.
Latte Lath risks facing internal disciplinary action should he remain at the Riverside after the transfer deadline on Friday.
McKenna on Broja, loan moves and home fixturespublished at 17:23 30 August

Henry Brownsey BBC Sport journalist
Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Fulham (kick-off 15:00 BST).
Here are the key lines from his news conference:
On signing a new striker: "I think it's less likely than likely at the moment, it's not impossible. It is a position we have looked at to strengthen, to be deep and strong in that area but also because we have some injuries - if the right opportunity for the right player that improves us comes then we will look to do it."
The club do remain in discussions with Armando Broja, despite his injury: "There's been discussions - that's not a secret. It's not a secret that he's got an injury issue. The clubs are ongoing with discussions, it has to be right for all parties. We will see what's right and hopefully the best resolution will be found by this evening."
He was asked about rumoured interest in Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath: " Any player who is active with any other team, we will never mention their names, the Armando situation is different because it's publicised that he's not with Chelsea's first team."
On their window as a whole: "We've done some really good business, we knew it was a big, big window for us - it always is for a newly promoted team. For a team coming from our position with the trajectory we've had as a football club. Everyone was of the same mindset that it was really important to strengthen as much as we could."
He added: "It's been a really challenging window and I think we've got into a good position, not everything goes your way but everyone has worked really hard to give us a squad that gives us a chance to be competitive this year."
On departures: "We will have a few players likely move on - they will always go with our best wishes." McKenna indicated some of these may be loan moves, but said "it certainly doesn't mean it's the end" for those players at the club.
After facing Liverpool and Manchester City in their first two games, he was asked if their season starts tomorrow: "I don't like that phrase because do we discount the Liverpool game because we didn't win it? Do we discount going to Man City away against the best team probably in world club football? We can't discount those experiences. It is all part of the season journey and everyone needs to enjoy every game."
On Fulham: "They're a really organised side, they're good on all phases - they can build with the ball but also go a little bit more direct. They have good structure in and out of possession. They are good on transitions and set plays - they are well coached."
On playing at Portman Road: "We feel all of our home games will be really important and better opportunities to get points with the record and atmosphere we create and the football we know we can play at home. We feel those games are the best opportunities to collect points."
There were no new injuries during the week, George Hirst remains "a couple of weeks away," but they "hope to see him between the next two international breaks." Nathan Broadhead is "really, really close to team training" and should be available after the international break. Harry Clarke is back doing work outside.

What needs to happen by deadline - the fans' verdictpublished at 07:39 30 August
07:39 30 August
We asked what you have made of Ipswich's transfer window so far, and what needs to be done on deadline day.
Here are some of your comments:
Matt: I feel the goalkeeper role hasn't been sorted yet unfortunately. Bournemouth have just got Kepa Arrizabalaga and I think we missed out there.
Anon: We should have signed Aaron Ramsdale but instead we signed Muric, and now arguably one of England's best goalkeepers has gone to a rival. Muric isn't good enough in my opinion. Burnley shipped a lot of goals last season.
Niall: What an amazing two years it has been. Unfortunately, for some of the team, the jump from League One to the Championship and now the Premier League is huge. The new blood will take time, but we have to believe in McKenna and the backroom team. It will take time for this team to gel, but it is coming.
Kevin: Whilst McKenna has done wonders in the last two seasons, I'm concerned on the effect that 10 new additions will have on the squad. We needed four or five to keep the positive vibe. Are those who got us to where we are going to be happy sitting on the substitutes' bench?

When does the window close?
The transfer window will close at 23:00 BST on Friday, 30 August for the Premier League, English Football League and Scotland.
The date was brought forward by the domestic leagues to align with European leagues.
Across Europe, the Bundesliga window will close at 19:00, Ligue 1 at 22:00, La Liga at 22:59 and Serie A at 23:00, but the Saudi Pro League transfer window remains open until 7 September.
Can a Premier League player signed on deadline day play this weekend?
Under league rules, new signings are eligible for the next Premier League game if the club submit the required documents by midday on the last working day before that match.
So any player signed after 12:00 on deadline day would be unable to play in this round of Premier League fixtures.
Where can I see all the confirmed transfer deals on deadline day?
Clubs will be able to make transfers again from Wednesday, 1 January until Monday, 3 February at 23:00 GMT. This is the same in Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Deadline day - a fan's takepublished at 16:15 29 August

The final piece of our transfer puzzle is the trickiest one to find – a striker, preferably with Premier League experience.
The problem is that finishers, number nines, are a bit like Oasis reunion tour tickets. Everyone wants them and there aren’t enough to go around.
It looked like the man to spearhead our attack was going to be Armando Broja from Chelsea, but despite the deal seemingly being agreed, an injury concern killed it – for now.
Since news first broke that Broja might not be coming we’ve been linked with multiple players. The YouTube highlights reels of certain strikers have suddenly had a spike in page views as Ipswich fans checked them out.
Aside from someone to play up top, I’d say the rest of the squad has been covered - and then some.
Ipswich fans were promised a bold approach to the Premier League, and the signing of Chiedozie Ogbene from Luton for a reported £8m took us over the £100m spending mark.
As the saying goes, we’re not going to die wondering.
The approach has partly been to raid the best of the Championship, with Jacob Greaves, Sammie Szmodics and Jack Clarke now in the door, and partly to bolster these young guns with the likes of Kalvin Philips, Ben Johnson and Jens Cajuste – men who’ve played at the top level either for club or country, or both.
We have strikers in the building of course – Szmodics, Liam Delap, Ali Al-Hamadi, Freddie Ladapo and George Hirst – but the latter is injured and it’s been clear that the club want someone with established top-level pedigree.
Ladapo and Al-Hamadi are likely to move on, either on loan or permanently, freeing up a squad space for that sought-after finisher.
And when that person arrives, the most eye-watering transfer window in the history of Portman Road will be over.

McKenna on team changes and 'priorities for the season'published at 07:43 29 August
07:43 29 August
Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk after the Carabao Cup defeat to Wimbledon: "There were some really positive things about the performance, there wasn’t too much wrong with it apart from our defending of two set-plays that we gave away cheaply.
"That put us in a difficult situation, and our slickness in the final third to create chances will improve as the understanding between the players develops.
"That wasn’t quite there, but other than that there wasn’t too much wrong with the performance."
On making 10 changes: "I think it was the right thing to do. Of course, going out of a cup competition is not good, we’re disappointed for the supporters who have come here tonight and given us really good support.
"We wanted to progress in the competition, but it's really, really clear what our priorities are this season."

When is the Carabao Cup third-round draw?published at 12:20 28 August
12:20 28 August
The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday at the conclusion of the second-round tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
The seven English clubs involved in European competitions this season, including holders Liverpool, will enter at the third-round stage.
Ties will take place on weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.
Because there are rounds of Champions League and Europa League fixtures also scheduled for those two midweeks, the six clubs involved in those competitions - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United - will be kept apart to ensure they can fulfil their Carabao Cup tie in the alternate midweek to their European fixture.
Those six clubs will take part in a pre-draw before Forest v Newcastle to decide if they will be at home or away in the third round, with a main draw determining the 16 ties later in the evening.
Should Chelsea progress to the next phase of the Conference League, they will not be in action in that competition again until the start of October.
Ogbene feels 'lucky' to be back in Premier Leaguepublished at 11:03 28 August
11:03 28 August
Winger Chiedozie Ogbene says signing for Ipswich Town was "an opportunity I had to grab with both hands".
The 27-year-old has joined the Tractor Boys on a four-year deal from Luton Town for a fee of £8m.
Ogbene only signed for the Hatters from Rotherham on a free transfer last summer and scored five goals in 39 games across all competitions.
He impressed in the league last season despite Luton's relegation and was the second fastest top-flight player- during the last campaign, after Tottenham's Micky van de Ven, having clocked 36.93kph against Fulham in September.
The Ireland international becomes the 10th signing at Portman Road since the club returned to the Premier League for the first time in over 20 years and takes their spending to almost £100m.
"I'm very excited and feel lucky to have this opportunity to play in the Premier League again," Ogbene told club media.
"I've had very positive chats with the manager and for someone to believe in me that I could play at this level again means a lot to me and my family.
"I know what he wants from me and the role I will play and I'm here to be a positive addition to the squad as we look to achieve our goals.
"It's an opportunity I had to grab with both hands and I can't wait to be involved as soon as possible."
