All three of Ipswich’s Premier League goals this season have come from outside the box – they’re the fifth side in Premier League history to have each of their first three goals in a single campaign come from distance, after Aston Villa (1993-94), Arsenal (2002-03), Fulham (2009-10) and Burnley (2016-17).

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, speaking to Premier League Productions, said: "It's a great moment for us, we have built and developed into a team that always has belief and never gives up and can score late goals.

"To have that experience today and to get a late equaliser in the manner we did, close to the away fans is a fantastic moment for our fans and group to go through.

"It always gives you fresh confidence in the group that the game is not done and we're a team that's capable of scoring late goals and that's important over a season.

"I thought it was a pretty hard-fought game. We started better but we just got opened up by a moment of real quality and a great pass from [Adam] Lallana followed by a great touch [from Tyler Dibling].

"It's steps in the right direction. We need that first win but we've had two tough away games and it is three games in a row where we have got something out of them."

  3. 'We got what we deserved'published at 18:02 21 September 2024

Ipswich Town goalscorer Sam Morsy after scoring his side's equalising goal said: "If you're away from home and score in the 95th minute it's a great feeling and it's great to celebrate with our fans and a hard earned point.

"We knew they are a good team, they do some things exceptionally well. We're a team that's getting better every week, there are things to improve but we have resolve in abundance, we kept going and got what we deserved.

"I thought we were the better team today. It keeps the momentum going and the spirit we have built over the last couple of seasons and we never say die."

  4. Sutton's predictions: Southampton v Ipswichpublished at 11:21 21 September 2024

    Sutton's predictions graphic

Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches this season, against a variety of guests.

For week five, he takes on singer-songwriter and West Ham fan James Smith whose debut album, Common People, is out now.

Southampton host Ipswich on Saturday at 15:00 BST.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

These are two more teams who are both waiting for their first Premier League victory of the season, although at least Southampton have had something to celebrate after beating Everton on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Ipswich have picked up a couple of points already, though, including an excellent draw at Brighton last time out. To go there and nullify the Seagulls attack is no mean feat, and they also had a big chance to score when Liam Delap crashed a shot against the post.

This was a Championship fixture last season, and Ipswich did the double over Saints, including at Portman Road in April when they nicked it 3-2 with a late winner after Southampton had played really well and battered them.

This time, it smells like a draw to me. I can't choose between either team, even though I know how much they would both give for all three points.

    James's prediction: 1-2

I am 'Team Ipswich' this year, but only because of Ed Sheeran! 1-2

  7. 'Players need to be listened to'published at 08:05 20 September 2024

The issue around the footballing calendar and the demands being placed on players right now is a difficult one.

First, we need to take into consideration the really high demands on the body that go on all-year round with few breaks, especially for international footballers and those in teams competing on multiple fronts.

I know the men's and the women's games are different, but we got exposed to these issues when we went from amateur to professional. There was a lot of loading, a lot of games and the result of that was a higher risk of injury and we have seen a lot of anterior cruciate ligament injuries now in the women's game.

From the fans' side, their point is often that players get paid a lot of money but I think that is irrelevant. That is just the industry players are in and, if you take out the money, they are still human beings.

The governing bodies need to look at who they consult with about changes in the calendar such as World Cups being held in winter and summers where there is just a couple of weeks off before going straight back into it. The changes and fixtures that are put in are there to generate more money, which makes it difficult. As a business, it is about money.

We talk about mental health a lot and you wonder, where is the time to switch off and have that time away from playing? To have that family time which is a deep human need? At some point mentally, if not physically, it will take its toll.

None of us want to see players striking, but players need to be listened to. What do they need to do to make change happen?

  9. McKenna on 'creating new narratives', squad growth and Southampton published at 17:27 19 September 2024

    BBC Sport Journalist

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game at Southampton (kick-off 15:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • He does not see the performance of last season's promoted teams as a sign his side may struggle: "With what happened last season with the three teams going down with not big points totals, that was always going to be a narrative, but it is not of any interest. It's not something we can waste any energy on."

    • In fact, he and his side are relishing the step up to the Premier League: "It's a huge jump, there's no doubt about that, but it is not one we are afraid of. We are enjoying the challenge of taking it on on and seeing if we can go and create a new narrative as we have done over the last couple of years."

    • He believes there are many ways to make sure Town are holding their own: "For us to be competitive in this league, for us to be successful at the end of the season, we’re going to have to show a lot of different strengths."

    • He also feels his squad are developing: "The weather being nice always helps, but this is the first time we’ve had the whole group together. We’ve been able to have more time with the players and some more detailed conversations, not just about technical and tactical things, but also about how we’re going to be as a group, laying down principles but also more time on the training pitch. I can see the understanding in all elements is growing."

    • On Southampton, McKenna said: "Southampton are a team that challenge every opponent they come up against, in terms of the possession they have and how they hold the ball in deep areas and how you answer the questions they pose. We know we’ll have to do that this weekend."

    • On whether this weekend's fixture was a "six-pointer": "Every game in the Premier League is important to us. Every game is a challenge, an opportunity. This weekend is no different."

  10. McKenna's 'platform' makes 'total sense'published at 12:31 17 September 2024

Another point on the board for Ipswich Town, along with a very welcome clean sheet (with huge thanks to our enigmatic keeper Aro Muric!) - while our survival rivals each shipped two or more goals. The consensus amongst the Town fanbase was that Saturday’s point was a positive. There was some trepidation from a few though that Kieran McKenna’s side hadn’t imposed themselves on Brighton enough.

Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson galloping away on the break were the two stand-out attacking moments for the visitors. For this to be the case is a reminder of the level the Blues now find themselves to be at, but perhaps suggests that something more important is being worked on behind the scenes.

McKenna’s first order of business when he joined the club in December 2021 was to fix a dysfunctional Ipswich defence. His predecessor’s talented but attack-first squad had shipped the most goals of any team in the top half of League One. After a few weeks under the new boss, Town would go on to keep 16 clean sheets in their remaining 22 games.

The trip to Man City, and the barmy four minutes where Town’s backline disintegrated and conceded three times, would have alarmed McKenna. Making us tough to beat as a platform for more expansive play makes total sense. For sides like Ipswich at Premier League level, “every point is a prisoner” (to quote a previous Town boss). Drawing matches when you’re second best is nothing to grumble at.

The ‘real quiz’ for our season though is what we do when the balance of power to the opposition is more even. Our first real opportunity to observe this is on Saturday when battle recommences with fellow promoted side Southampton!

  11. A familiar poor startpublished at 10:46 16 September 2024

    Chris Collinson
    BBC Sport statistician

A graphic showing the 'slowest starts' by promoted sides in Premier League history (after 4 Premier League games- trios only)
2023-24- Burnley, Sheffield United, Luton- 1 combined point.
2024-25- Leicester, Ipswich, Southampton, 4 combined points
2004-05- Norwich, West Brom, Crystal Palace, 6 combined points
1993-94- Newcastle, West Ham, Swindon, 8 combined points
2011-12- QPR, Norwich, Swansea, 8 combined points
2012-13- Reading, Southampton, West Ham, 8 combined points
2020-21- Leeds, West Brom, Fulhamn- 8 combined points
2021-22- Norwich, Watford, Brentford- 8 combined points

Leicester were close to a win against Crystal Palace and Ipswich have had a really tough start, but this is the second-worst start a promoted trio have made to a Premier League season in terms of points, with only last season worse.

This is also the fourth time in the last five seasons that the promoted sides have failed to reach double figures between them.

That only happened six times in the previous 26 seasons where three sides were promoted.

  12. Brighton 0-0 Ipswich - the fans' verdictpublished at 08:05 16 September 2024

    Your views banner

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Brighton and Ipswich.

Here are some of your comments:

    Brighton fans

Jonny: A really frustrating afternoon and a disappointing result against a team that still plays a League One style of football. I think we dodged a bullet not getting McKenna! No more direct free-kicks from Dunk please - it’s embarrassing! On a positive note, Baleba was exceptional again and Ferguson looked sharp. Hopefully Joao Pedro is back for the Nottingham Forest game...

Steve: Dominant and dynamic, but couldn't make that telling last pass in the final third. When this team has all the injured players available they will be a real force. Never looked like losing, and should have gained three points.

Bob: Usual stuff from us - loads of possession with little result in the way of goals. We lack a centre-forward who can challenge the opposition defence. No bite. Still, a point gained - but also two lost. Too many passes.

    Ipswich fans

Archie: To a man, we defended excellently throughout. Struggled on the ball in the first half but grew into the game after the break. Plaudits will rightly go to Muric but Tuanzebe was just as good, having arguably his best game in a Town shirt. A great point away from home against a really strong side. That first win is coming...

Andy: I had a feeling we’d get something from this game. A point away at Brighton is a fantastic result. Confidence will be growing in the Ipswich camp as the players get more and more comfortable with each other and the Premier League.

Simon: Very resilient performance with Phillips looking decent and Muric was really solid. Hutchinson looked like he was trying too hard but he was lively. We're very combative with some attacking threat, especially when we bring the subs on later. We will stay up.

  13. Brighton 0-0 Ipswich: Muric magic keeps Seagulls at baypublished at 18:08 14 September 2024

It wasn't pretty but after earning a hard-fought point at Brighton, Ipswich won't care.

That they came away with anything from the Amex was in large part down to a phenomenal double save from goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

The 25-year-old endured a tough time in Ipswich goal in the Tractor Boys' last Premier League away game at Manchester City.

Muric was then sent home early from the Kosovo national team for an alleged breach of team rules but he responded superbly at Brighton.

Having got down to make a smart save - albeit one he might expect to make - to keep out Georginio Rutter, he was up in a flash to throw himself to his right deny Kaoru Mitoma what seemed a certain goal.

As good as the save was, the timing of it was perhaps even more important, coming just as Brighton had cranked up the pressure approaching half-time.

Had the home side got one, the added momentum could well have seen them take the game away from Ipswich.

Instead, Kieran McKenna's side held firm and prevented Brighton creating any other chances of significance.

  14. 'A Delap goal would have been legendary'published at 17:50 14 September 2024

Kieran McKenna managing IpswichImage source, Getty Images

Kieran McKenna spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Ipswich drew with Brighton: "It was a great effort from the players from where we're at.

"We're trying to bring a group together, we've got players coming into the team who haven't played with their team-mates before. We've got people coming back from injury, who haven't had a pre-season.

"We're trying to bring the group together, so to come away from home, show the spirit, the resolve we did from a defensive point of view was excellent.

"We have some moments in the second half but the way we fought the whole game to get a point was a big positive."

On Muric's double save: "It is [outstanding] and he's capable of that. It's why we wanted to bring him to the club, he's a goalkeeper that can win you points.

"When you're in our position as a newly-promoted club, every point is valuable and if you've got a goalkeeper capable of making a save to earn you a point or a win then it's worth a lot. We're really happy to have him.

"He's still got a lot to do, he's working hard in training to adapt to us and get up to the level that he's capable of. But it's a great game for him today."

On Delap hitting the post: "If that goes in, in terms of back-to-back Premier League games and goals, you'd put that on top of the one he scored at Fulham.

"It would've been legendary scoring two goals like that at 21 years old when you're just getting used to the Premier League. Really unlucky, great run but it wasn't to be."

On first away point: "We know we have to keep improving. The game was more in Brighton's favour than we'd have wanted it to be but again, where we're at, having Man City and Brighton as the first two away games with the quality that they have, we know we're really going to have to fight to pick up points and develop our style of play in the toughest league in the world.

"It's a good step in that direction but it's only a step. We've got a training week now, the first time we'll have the whole group together, especially the boys who came in late. We'll build on the stuff we're feeling in the games and we can still get stronger."
