Celtic v Kilmarnock head to head stats
    • Celtic have only lost one of their last 81 home games against Kilmarnock in all competitions (W63 D17), a 2-0 league defeat in October 2012 under Neil Lennon.

    • Kilmarnock have lost 11 of their last 12 league meetings with Celtic (D1) since a 2-1 win in September 2018 under Steve Clarke. However, the Rugby Park side have already beaten Celtic this season, knocking the holders out of the Viaplay Cup with a 1-0 win in the second round in August.

    • Celtic have won 16 of their last 17 Scottish Premiership matches at home under Brendan Rodgers. He won all of his last 14 league home games during his first spell and has won two of his three matches since returning this season.

    • Since the start of last season, no team has lost more away Scottish Premiership matches than Kilmarnock's 16. They have picked up just 10 points from a possible 66 during this period (P22 W2 D4 L16).

    • This will be the 700th game of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers’ managerial career in all competitions (31 Watford, 23 Reading, 96 Swansea, 166 Liverpool, 204 Leicester, 180 Celtic). He didn’t lose his 100th (win v Norwich), 200th (draw v Chelsea), 300th (draw v West Brom), 400th (win v St. Johnstone), 500th (win v Bournemouth) or 600th (win v Norwich).

    • Rodgers has 12 managerial wins in his career over Kilmarnock’s Derek McInnes – his most against a single opposing manager.

    Sandy Armour, Killie Hippo fanzine

September has been a disappointing month for Killie with no league wins and a cup exit to ensure our flying start to the campaign is now just a distant memory and it's hard to see us turning things around at Parkhead this Saturday.

It all seems a bit like a mirror image of last season and although there is no doubt we recruited well in some areas of the team it appears the same old problems persist in others, like centre midfield and up front.

We simply do not have the creativity to break down teams who sit deep and we don't have that magical striker who is going to get us 15 or 20 goals a season. They are few and far between.

I'd like to give a shoutout to Robbie Deas who has found himself on the bench through no fault of his own. He was excellent in the opening weeks but was then moved out to the left and now dropped as the manager prefers Joe Wright.

I'd like to see us give another try to the formation that served us so well in the opening three games because we'll need all hands to the pump if we are going to get anything from Celtic.

  6. McInnes fears extended Magennis absencepublished at 16:09 1 October 2023

Derek McInnes fears Kyle Magennis could be missing for an extended period after picking up a hamstring injury in Kilmarnock's 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

Magennis limped off moments after his own goal cancelled out Brad Lyons' opener for Killie.

"He'll definitely be out next week, he's took a sore one I think," McInnes said.

"It's a hamstring injury, how bad it is we don't know. We signed him and we got him for a reason because he's had injury problems.

"I've known him a long time, he played in the same St Mirren youth team as my boy and I've watched him since he was a teenager.

"When we signed him there was nothing on the medical that we could fail him on - he's just been unfortunate with a catalogue of a few injuries.

"He's not missed a training session, he's been terrific - the boy deserves a real dose of fortune. We'll support him and get round him and he'll be an influential player for us again."

We asked for your views following Kilmarnock's draw with St Mirren

Amy: Not a very good game of football overall but Kilmarnock were probably the better team in the end. The draws we're getting this season we'd have lost last year so got to take the positives when they come.

  8. 'I might as well go up for it' - Lyons relieved goal stoodpublished at 12:17 1 October 2023

BBC Scotland's Jane Lewis at Rugby Park

Kilmarnock scorer Brad Lyons was relieved his goal stood in Saturday's 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

The midfielder charged down a Charles Dunne clearance then beat goalkeeper Zach Hemming to head Killie in front.

"We were just told to go on the front foot and thankfully I've got the block in from the clearance and then when I was up in the air I was just like, 'there's nothing to lose here I might as well go up for it'," Lyons, 26, told BBC Scotland.

"But usually it’s one of those ones where the ref goes soft on the keepers and gives it as a foul, but thankfully I could rise high enough and then head it in with enough power. So it was a good feeling to get us off the mark.

"I know Zach well obviously from his time at Kilmarnock. But with the adrenaline you don't really think about it, you just go for it. You see the ball in the air, so thankfully it worked out."

Lyons was buoyed by an improved defensive performance and felt a draw was a fair result but insists Kilmarnock's winless run, which now stands at six games, is not playing on the mind.

"Not really because we know the quality we have in the changing room, both defensively and going forward," he said. "We just need to make it all click all at once.

"At times we've been playing one half well and the other half not so well, so we’re trying to put that full 90-minute performance altogether. But we're confident that we're going to turn those one-point games into three points."

  10. Kilmarnock 1-1 St Mirren: Analysispublished at 17:39 30 September 2023

BBC Scotland's Jane Lewis at Rugby Park

This game lacked quality, simple as that. Both sides looked for the winner and their passion and drive could not be faulted, but in the final third neither set of players showed any cutting edge.

The one positive Kilmarnock will take is that they did not concede a late goal, as has been a recent habit.

As for St Mirren, their unbeaten run continues and they will take something from that.

But both managers will be bemoaning the fact that their players were just not clinical enough in dangerous areas.

  11. Kilmarnock 1-1 St Mirren: Manager reactionpublished at 17:38 30 September 2023

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes told BBC Scotland: "Put a lot into the game. A lot of credit to Brad Lyons, he was second favourite for his goal. He showed the determination that we're just needing a wee bit more of in the final third to score a goal. Terrific bravery.

"We just didn't enjoy being in front enough. We switch off in the wider area and the cross comes in from [Scott] Tanser. Tanser's been very influential for them in recent games and it's tough ask to continually match that. It's unfortunate, Kyle Magennis - he's doing his job, matching a run.

"Maybe a draw was a fair result. I thought we were the better team second half. I thought we had the better opportunities. I wouldn't say we were whole heartedly the better team."

  17. St Mirren showing what can be done - McInnespublished at 17:13 29 September 2023

Derek McInnes believes Kilmarnock can take inspiration from St Mirren, with the Paisley side flying high in the Scottish Premiership.

Kilmarnock finished 10th in the league last season while the Buddies secured a top-six finish for the first time since 1985 and have carried that momentum into the current campaign.

St Mirren currently sit second, unbeaten in their first six league games and just two points behind league leaders Celtic, and McInnes wants Killie to learn from their progress.

"St Mirren were a reference to us at the start of the season," he said before the sides meet at Rugby Park this weekend.

"Even though we never lost to them last season, we looked at them and the things they did right and they’ve continued that at the start of this campaign.

"I think it shows what can be done and we’re working towards that. Winning tomorrow would go a long way to feeling better about ourselves [after Tuesday's Viaplay Cup defeat].

"In comparison to last year, I feel as though we’re competing really well and we’re always in the game. We’ve got good players, good types, players that are desperate to do well for the club, and hopefully we can get back to winning ways tomorrow."

  18. McInnes on cup exit, small margins and St Mirrenpublished at 16:46 29 September 2023

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes has been talking to the media before his side's Scottish Premiership clash against St Mirren on Saturday.

Here are the key points from his press conference:

    • His primary emotion is "huge disappointment" following the Viaplay Cup exit to Hearts on Tuesday and he felt Killie were the better side in the second half.

    • Believes his team are still on the right track, but that they need to "tidy up the little things" in order to end their recent winless run.

    • Full of praise for St Mirren and Stephen Robinson, and said they were "a reference to us at the start of the season".

    • Believes the Paisley side are a great example of what can be done on a smaller budget, and that Killie are "working towards that".

  20. Kilmarnock v St Mirren: Pick of the statspublished at 15:07 28 September 2023

Kilmarnock v St Mirren head to head stats
    • After their 2-0 win in April last season, Kilmarnock could earn successive league victories over St Mirren for the first time since October 2019 (run of four).

    • St Mirren are without a win in nine top-flight visits to Kilmarnock (D3 L6) since a 3-1 victory in May 2013 under Danny Lennon.

    • After winning their opening match to a Scottish Premiership season for the first time since 2018-19, Kilmarnock have failed to win any of their other league games this season (P5 D3 L2), making it the second time this year they have gone five league matches without a win (also February to March).

    • St Mirren come into this match unbeaten in the Premiership this season (P6 W4 D2); they haven’t gone unbeaten in seven matches in the top flight since doing so across two seasons: their final five games in 2000-01 and first two in 2006-07.

    • Kilmarnock’s Derek McInnes has lost just one of his 28 top-flight games against St Mirren as a manager (W12 D15), a 1-0 defeat with Aberdeen in August 2019. At home, he has suffered no defeats in 13 such matches versus the Buddies (W7 D6), the most he has managed against a side at home in the top flight without losing.

  21. Wales signs new deal & targets more first-team actionpublished at 13:02 27 September 2023

    Bobby WalesImage source, SNS

Teenage forward Bobby Wales says it was an "easy decision" to sign a new Kilmarnock deal as he continues to live the dream with his boyhood club.

The 18-year-old, who has progressed from the academy ranks to first-team reckoning since joining from Hurlford boys club in 2015, is now under contract at Rugby Park until summer 2025.

Wales made his Killie debut last season and went on to make nine further first-team appearances while netting 25 goals for the reserve and development sides.

“I’m really happy to sign a new deal," he said. "Growing up as a fan and progressing from mascot to ball boy before having the privilege of playing for the club has meant a lot to me, so it was an easy decision to stay.

“The aim for this campaign is to continue showing the form I did last season by scoring goals at whatever level I’m asked to, while getting more minutes in and around the first team.”

  22. 'Same old story' - your views on cup exitpublished at 12:43 27 September 2023

    your views graphic

We asked for your views on Kilmarnock’s 2-1 defeat at home to Hearts in the Viaplay Cup last eight.

Here’s what some of you said:

George: It’s the same old story, losing too many goals at the death of a game is costing us big time. The subs are being made too late and can’t change the game. It’s Derek McInnes’ team now and I do not see any difference. The manager has a lot answer for.

Robert: Neither team played much football in the first half, with the only bit of class coming at Hearts' goal. I thought we were terrific in the second half, we very much deserved the equaliser and with a bit more composure and a little bit of luck we would have won. Some say we should have made changes earlier but I’m not sure it makes sense to change when you are on top.

Jim: Time is running out for the manager. I’m fed up hearing how good we were. We need to get real, we can’t win games, how is that good? Why did we take a defender off and replace him with another defender? Why was another forward not brought on to give us more support up front? This all points to a manager who has lost his confidence.

Thomas: It’s the same old story, losing goals in the 90th minute. Will we ever learn? It happens all too often. Something is basically wrong - fitness, tactics, poor defending or something else? Unless it’s fixed, our season will be another disappointment. The Old Firm victories mean nothing now, there is an urgent rethink needed.
