I’ve never been snubbed by a lion before but there’s a first time for everything.

The Super Max lion is waving on the drivers as they pass at Zandvoort and as it’s still quite hot, although there’s a threatening black cloud moving in, he took his head off.

I thought he’d be up for a little chat for the live but no, he told me to go away and ran off when I approached. So I had to snap him in the wild instead.

I don't think Lewis Hamilton would ever write off a season. The comments from Hamilton in Hungary, saying that he was "useless", were utterly extraordinary. He did come back this weekend and say that's not how I truly feel. Lewis Hamilton is still in a good place I think. His standards are so high, which is why he is so brutal on himself. I am absolutely fascinated to see how these last 10 races play out. He will not give up on this season and he will not want to get beaten by his team-mate. I would expect to see quite a vast improvement from him over the next few months.

It is a 1:11.218 for Max Verstappen to pop him fifth quickest.

Meanwhile, there's some dark clouds moving over the circuit as we enter the final 20 minutes of this session.

Well he's not going to be troubling the top two based on his first two sector times.

  8. Postpublished at 12:10 BST 29 August

Max Verstappen is now most definitely on soft tyres and here he comes for a fast lap.

  9. Postpublished at 12:07 BST 29 August

Fernando Alonso has been looking quick in this session and he cuts the gap to the McLarens to half a second as he goes third quickest.

  10. Postpublished at 12:06 BST 29 August

Carlos Sainz's team-mate Alex Albon now goes third quickest but there's still a sizeable gap of a second between the McLarens and the rest.

A few more are on softs including both Ferraris and the Williams of Carlos Sainz, who goes third quickest but he's 1.2s off the McLarens.

  12. Postpublished at 12:02 BST 29 August

George Russell is also on softs now but he aborts a fast lap after a wobble coming out of Turn 9.

There was a sharp intake of breath from the orange fans down here at the final corner when the red flag was waved and a Red Bull looked in trouble. Luckily for the home crowd, it was poor Yuki Tsunoda, and not Max Verstappen who came a cropper. Phew.

The Verstappen grandstand is right next to us, with a decent sized screen to watch the action. Never one to miss a moment, the music was cranked up to 11 as we waited for stricken Yuki, and Kimi Antonelli, to be picked up.

Oscar Piastri has had some bad luck in the past few races and yet he's still there, he's still delivering. Can Lando Norris keep up the same level of consistency himself? That's the question I think heading into the last 10 races.

  15. Postpublished at 11:59 BST 29 August

Hmm, ignore my comment earlier about Max Verstappen on softs. The timing screen did show that but is now showing he's been on mediums throughout.

The McLarens are definitely on softs as Lando Norries goes quickest with 1:10.278.

  16. Postpublished at 11:57 BST 29 August

Oscar Piastri goes two tenths quicker than Max Verstappen to return to the top with 1:11.794.

  17. Postpublished at 11:55 BST 29 August

Max Verstappen has bolted on a set of softs and improves with 1:11.986.

We're edging closer to last year's pole time of 1:09.673s.

Carlos Sainz has a trip into the gravel but skips right across it and back on to the track.

  19. Postpublished at 11:53 BST 29 August

Max Verstappen returned to the top of the order before the red flag with a time of 1:12.101.

George Russell is second quickest, just 0.029 off Verstappen's time while Lando Norris is third quickest.
