Lando
Norris topped Friday practice at the Italian Grand Prix at the start of
a weekend in which he needs to make inroads into team-mate Oscar
Piastri's championship lead.
Norris
dropped to 34 points behind the Australian with nine races remaining
following a retirement in last weekend's Dutch Grand Prix, the first
race after Formula 1's summer break.
Norris
was 0.083 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in second place,
ahead of Williams' Carlos Sainz, Piastri, the second Ferrari of Lewis
Hamilton and Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
Hamilton
has a five-place grid penalty for the grand prix after an infringement
on the reconnaissance laps before the Dutch event.
Piastri
missed the first practice session as McLaren protege Alex Dunne was
driving his car, and set his fastest time on his second lap on the soft
tyres after a problem on his first attempt.

'Antonelli will be licking his wounds'published at 17:15 BST 5 September

I think Kimi Antonelli will go away and lick his wounds not having to be able to complete more than four laps and beaching that Mercedes in the gravel.
I think there were a lot of gravel excursions, which makes me excited for tomorrow's qualifying!
'Exciting if Ferrari can challenge for pole'published at 17:06 BST 5 September

I will get excited if we do see Ferrari challenging for pole position. Lando Norris is doing exactly what he needs to do, but we did see him on top at Zandvoort and then of course Oscar Piastri was able to get ahead of him in qualifying.
But Williams, nice to see them up there. And in particular, Carlos Sainz as well, who has not had the best season stepping in at Williams.
Lando Norris finishes the second practice session on top.
That will be just what the McLaren driver will have wanted after his lack of fortune at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend.
Ferrari, who finished one-two in FP1, had a decent showing of things with Charles Leclerc going second and just 0.083 behind Norris, with Lewis Hamilton fifth but still within two tenths of top spot.
Carlos Sainz in third has a stellar showing in his Williams with championship leader Oscar Piastri fourth fastest.

We are into the final five minutes of the second practice session.
There's not been much change at the top with Lando Norris still leading the way, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc just behind him in second, Carlos Sainz in third, championship leader Oscar Piastri fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth.
Turn six and seven is where the first DRS detection zone is, just so you've got what Lewis Hamilton's said in your mind's eye.
A rapid bit of the track to have power drop out, you'd have to say.
Meanwhile, his team-mate Charles Leclerc goes off at the Ascari chicane at some speed, but he rides his Ferrari through the gravel and grass and back on track.
A word on Nico Hulkenberg. He's set the eighth fastest time of the session so far with a 1:20.241 - just over three tenths off Lando Norris.
Meanwhile, George Russell is on a hot lap in his Mercedes. He'll be hoping for a more prosperous end to the session having suffered a hydraulics issue at the tail end of FP1.

We're into the final third of this second practice session and Lando Norris tops the charts as things stand.
Ferrari had a decent end to the first session and they're very much in the picture as time ticks down.
Charles Leclerc has just gone second fastest with a time that's just 0.083 seconds slower than Norris while Lewis Hamilton is less than two tenths down at the moment.
