It's a bit of a crowded showing on track at the minute.

So much so that Lance Stroll's remonstrated with his engineer about on onrushing Alex Albon.

  2. Monza struggles for Aston Martin?published at 16:38 BST 5 September

Double points for Aston Martin last time out in Zandvoort, which was much-needed and much-celebrated. But I don't feel like this track particularly suits the Aston Martin. I think Fernando Alonso was saying yesterday there are other tracks that will suit them more than this, maybe Brazil, maybe Singapore, and this one is going to be a bit of a struggle.

Carlos Sainz is looking very handy this afternoon.

He's wrestled his Williams into another stellar lap to go second.

He's probably a fair bit happier than Max Verstappen who's unhappy with how jumpy and nervous his Red Bull is "on every little bump".

Speaking of Charles Leclerc, he's looking suitably less comfortable than Lewis Hamilton at the minute.

The 2024 Italian Grand Prix race winner has currently set the eighth fastest time of the session and he's unhappy with the soft tyre..

That's a decent lap from Lewis Hamilton. And he looks more comfortable in the Ferrari than his team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Lando Norris is rewarded for pushing in his McLaren.

He's set the fastest time with a 1:19.878 on the soft tyre.

Lewis Hamilton set a time just over a tenth behind him shortly after.

Lando Norris totally backed out of that one, as he should. Just a bit too greedy with the part of the kerb but nicely saved. He did just set the fastest first sector of anybody.

Lando Norris has just kicked up some dust as he pushes the limit in his McLaren.

He'll be wanting to avoid any mistakes this afternoon.

Williams have picked up some pace, now.

Despite his nervy moment just now, Alex Albon goes third but what of his team-mate Carlos Sainz?

Well he's just set the fastest time, leaving Max Verstappen in a Williams sandwich.

  11. Postpublished at 16:26 BST 5 September

Blimey, Alex Albon's just wrestled his Williams to keep it on the straight and narrow.

He picked up some power but snapped some oversteer headed into the corner and slides all over the kerb, showing some impressive reflexes to avoid losing the rear and drifting off track.

He consults his engineer, asking them to check the floor.

There's no pressure for Kimi Antonelli, as he has a seat next season; he will be in that Mercedes next year. But he was billed as a bit of a protege, and he was billed as a generational talent coming in to this year in the same ilk as Max Verstappen was.

Max Verstappen, on the medium tyre, goes fastest now with a 1:20.710, shortly after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc went top of the tree on the hard tyre.

In the mean time, both Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto have taken quite a lot of kerb at the Lesmo but have kept the car on the track unlike Kimi Antonelli.

  14. Postpublished at 16:20 BST 5 September

Surprisingly, there's still quite a bit of gravel on the track near to where Kimi Antonelli drifted off.

For some reason it wasn't cleared away during the red flag.

Green light and we are back under way at Monza after that brief intermission following Kimi Antonelli going off.

Prior to that, Antonelli had set the seventh-fastest time of 1:21.367, just over three tenths off Lando Norris.

It's been a pretty jam-packed opening 10 minutes or so to this session with broken mirrors to the McLarens overshadowing matters shortly before Kimi Antonelli's off.

Not that those cracked mirrors have hindered the men in papaya too much, mind.

Lando Norris tops the standings thus far with a time of 1:21.012 with his team-mate, and championship leader, Oscar Piastri exactly two tenths behind.

I was going to say Kimi Antonelli used too much kerb but he got a snap very early on, on the second part of the Lesmo, and actually corrected it. And because it's one of our lovely classic old-school circuits, was then out on to the gravel.

    Dear oh dear, Kimi Antonelli.

The Mercedes driver, who could really do with a bit of good luck at the minute, is beached in the gravel.

Not what the young Italian driver will have wanted at all, let alone at his home race.

  19. 'Mirrors hard to see out of'published at 16:10 BST 5 September

    Alice Powell

The mirrors are very hard to see out of. Every driver will have mirrors adjusted, pretty much every time they go into the car because of mechanics leaning in to the cockpit can knock them slightly. But you'll want to see just over your rear tyre.
