Lewis Hamilton is on the bubble and it could be Charles Leclerc who kicks him out of town. Leclerc saves his skin and Hamilton can taste the danger- but only for a brief moment, as both get through... just!

Liam Lawson is on a fast lap and is coming up behind the Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton moves out the way for the Racing Bulls man but Lawson then struggles to keep it together and his time is deleted.

Leclerc has slipped down the order and is now in 13th place and in trouble.

It's bad for Ferrari. They are the fourth-fastest team - they shouldn't be behind two Williams and an Aston Martin.

Oscar Piastri can only manage third on the timesheets, just over three tenths from team-mate Lando Norris. The Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are nowhere near the front-runners at the moment, with both drivers a second off Norris' best marker.

  7. Norris goes to the toppublished at 22:55 BST 17 October

George Russell goes second fastest in the Mercedes but he's still 0.299 seconds away from Max Verstappen's top marker. Can Lando Norris do any better? He certainly can. The McLaren driver looks strong so far and goes quickest with a 1:33.033.

Two purple sectors in the bag for Max Verstappen on his opening flyer on the medium compound. He crosses the line and hits a 1:33.163.

Red Bull don't want to make the same mistake as they just did with Yuki Tsunoda, so Max Verstappen is straight out into the action, no messing about.

Medium tyres again, please, but this time put 10 minutes on the clock.

It all got very, very messy on those final runs, the queue coming out of the pit lane and everyone leaving it far too late.

"What the **** was this?!" says Gabriel Bortoleto to his Sauber team after his knockout in the first part of sprint qualifying. "Yeah, we'll review it later," his engineer replies.

The conclusion of that session was very crowded indeed, with cars popping up all over the place after waiting in the pit lane and getting in each other's way.

Between the team and the driver (Tsunoda), Red Bull have made a right hash of that session.

Charles Leclerc meets a load of traffic as he reaches the final corner at COTA. The Ferrari man goes from 16th to 13th, as Yuki Tsunoda's knockout from SQ1 is confirmed.

    Poor Yuki didn't make it.

Cars are hustling to get out of the pit lane in time to bank a lap around the Circuit of the Americas before the SQ1 chequered flag falls. Yuki Tsunoda in in 14th place but the Japanese driver is telling his Red Bull pit wall he may be in trouble, as he was one of the last ones to appear.
