  1. Should RB keep Ricciardo next season?published at 21:53 British Summer Time 7 June

Jacques Villeneuve, 1997 F1 world champion and Canadian native, is a part of Sky Sports' commentary team this weekend in Montreal and like Nico Rosberg whenever the 2016 title winner is on, the 53-year-old is certainly not shy about giving his honest opinion.

With the topic of the driver market buzzing around the paddock, Villeneuve has given his thoughts on Daniel Ricciardo, whose RB contract ends at the end of the 2024 season.

"Why is he still in F1? Why?" said Villeneuve. "We've been hearing the same thing now for the last four or five years; 'we have to make the car better for him, poor him.' Sorry, it's been five years of that. No. You're in F1.

"Maybe you make that effort for Lewis Hamilton, who has won multiple championships; you don't make that effort for a driver who can't cut it. If you can't cut it, go home, there is someone else to take you place.

"That's how it's always been in racing. It's the pinnacle of the sport. There is no reason to keep going and to find excuses.

"People talk about the first two seasons. He was beating [Sebastian] Vettel, who was burnt out and trying to invent things with the car to go and win and just making a mess of his weekends.

"And then he was beating, for half a season, [Max] Verstappen, when Verstappen was 18 years old and just starting. And then that was it. He stopped beating anyone after that."

    Do you agree?

So, here we go again and with a sense of deja-vu after FP1...air temperature 19.7C, track 27C, with rain incoming from SW.

The FIA forecasters advise teams to expect rain starting at 17:05 local, likely turning heavier from 17:20. Official risk of rain 100%.

With showers forecast across the weekend, the need to protect those green intermediate tyres meant Alpine reserve driver Jack Doohan, who was sitting in for Esteban Ocon, ended his stint with minimal time to shine on what was his first time driving at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

By the end of the hour, the sun had come out so on went the soft tyres. Lando Norris and his McLaren was quickest with the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc second and third on the timesheets.

Hello again, folks. There was plenty of waiting around in the various garages during first practice and limited track running due to the wet conditions in Montreal.

Carlos Sainz asked on the Ferrari team radio in the opening hour whether rain was on the way for FP2. The reply the Spaniard received was "yes".

So, if the skies stay dry, second practice will get under way at 22:00 BST.

McLaren’s Lando Norris led Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in a delayed and rain-affected first practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix.

A storm before the session led organisers to evacuate spectators from the Ile-Notre Dame for a time and the session started after a 21-minute delay for officials to dry the track.

The times tumbled in a brief period of running on dry-weather slick tyres in the final five minutes.

Norris ended up 0.328 seconds quicker than Sainz, with the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc third fastest a further 0.543secs adrift.

Well, that was a bit of a shame. The sun made an appearance in the end but we are none the wiser as to who is going to be the driver to beat this weekend.

Shall we have a quick pit stop and then regroup at 21:45 BST for second practice? That sounds like a plan.

Will it rain again? I think it will you know.

    See you shortly!

The Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is searching for grip but has to cut one of the corners, as he comes up against a slippery patch off the racing line. Only a few seconds of this first practice session remaining.

Flashes of red are starting to pop up across the timing board. Charles Leclerc has reached Turn Seven and is carefully navigating the remaining spots of standing water. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are also on the softs, checking the conditions in the sunshine.

Where does Carlos Sainz go? He is very strongly linked with a drive at Williams. He is running out of seats. We'll definitely see him on the grid next season.

The circuit is quiet. Not a car to enjoy.

Fred Vasseur reminds me a tiny bit of Sebastian Vettel's dad, Norbert.

Lando Norris has his eyes closed in the McLaren cockpit. Jet lag can catch up with us anywhere.

And then there was one. Valtteri Bottas, on green rubber to match his bright Sauber livery, is the only car out on the drying circuit.

A few moments ago, home driver Lance Stroll gave a wave to the supporters in the stands. The coats are off and the umbrellas are down... for now.

Ferrari seem to be a team in a really good place with loads of confidence. I am pretty sure that [team principal] Fred Vasseur skips everywhere in the paddock.

While Monaco Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc heads back into the Ferrari garage, his team-mate Carlos Sainz is still out to the delight of the Montreal fans. The Spaniard has beaten the Monegasque driver's time by 0.075 seconds, but he now comes on the team radio to ask if there will be rain for FP2?

Yes comes the reply, so Sainz comes back to base to save those intermediate tyres.

Oh no. Poor Jack Doohan. The Australian is sat in the garage and is waiting patiently to head back out in the Alpine. Just the one lap on a set of wets is the sum of the 21-year-old's first practice running so far.
