  1. Team radio - Verstappen to Red Bullpublished at 23:08 BST 18 October

"The track is a bit difficult I think."

  2. Postpublished at 23:07 BST 18 October

Oh dear, Charles Leclerc has a bit of a spin but keeps himself in track limits.

His car is currently in 10th spot and there is four minutes to go.

Max Verstappen has been on the team radio to say the track is slightly difficult.

Max Verstappen looks very neat and tidy on this lap and there he goes, straight to the top of the pile!

  4. Postpublished at 23:05 BST 18 October

There is a flurry of cars on fast laps.

Max Verstappen puts himself in provisional pole position, four tenths ahead of Lando Norris.

  5. 'Verstappen can deliver under pressure'published at 23:04 BST 18 October

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra in Austin

It's more important to get it right in this session than it is to necessarily go for the fastest lap you've ever done, because I just feel, at the moment, McLaren aren't getting it right. Those drivers are distracted slightly.

Max as we know can deliver under immense pressure, and go do it time and time again. And I do think that the car itself has improved. Red Bull have definitely found something he likes in their set-up.

  6. Postpublished at 23:02 BST 18 October

The clock is ticking down from 10 minutes as Max Verstappen joins the circuit.

Oscar Piastri is on a fast lap, where will he end up?

  7. 'Unpredictable Q3'published at 23:00 BST 18 October

I think this is one of the most unpredictable Q3s for a while. Max Verstappen is probably going to get pole position but where is Oscar Piastri? He's not looked quick all qualifying, can he recover?

The Ferraris looks surprisingly quick after being terrible yesterday. The Mercedes are a bit up and down. Fernando Alonso has shown pace at times but then faded again.

I really wouldn't want to call what the order of the grid is behind Verstappen. I think he is very much the one to beat.

  8. Go! Go! Go!published at 22:59 BST 18 October

Last qualifying session of the day. The fight for pole position is on.

  9. Postpublished at 22:57 BST 18 October

Two minutes to go before Q3 begins. Will Max Verstappen make it two poles this weekend or will the McLarens battle for the top qualifying spot?

Something has happened; Alonso hasn't improved, Antonelli hasn't improved, Hulkenberg only just improves. It looks like the track has got slower for some reason.

  11. Postpublished at 22:54 BST 18 October

Ollie Bearman manages to get himself into Q3.

Also joining him are Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, Fernado Alonso and Carlos Sainz.

That was a little bit under pressure that lap [from George Russell]. He was slinging the car around and it was drifting quite a bit, and that's where you lose a lot of time. You can't afford to do that. Russell had to get a good lap in; he can't complain about traffic.

  14. Postpublished at 22:50 BST 18 October

Isack Hadjar's team-mate Liam Lawson is in the drop zone. Can the Racing Bulls man push himself into Q3?

  15. Hadjar 'bitterly disappointed'published at 22:49 BST 18 October

    Jennie Gow
    F1 pit-lane reporter in Austin

Isack Hadjar is not a very happy man, I can say that much. He knows that the Racing Bulls car can go faster and he just messed it up. When a driver makes a mistake, and it's a driver error, I think it's very hard for them. He's bitterly disappointed. He knows that car is good, and if he had a couple of more laps, what could he have done with that car? He is a rookie, and this is the first time he's taken to the track in Austin.

  16. Postpublished at 22:48 BST 18 October

Three minutes to go. Title leader Oscar Piastri is currently seventh fastest. Can he improve on his lap time?

Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the top four are back in the garage - are they safe?

  17. Drop zonepublished at 22:47 BST 18 October

    11. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls)

    12. George Russell (Mercedes)

    13. Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull)

    14. Franco Colapinto (Alpine)

    15. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)

  18. Team radio - Tsunoda to Red Bullpublished at 22:46 BST 18 October

Tsunoda: "Lawson is, uh, disturbing me on purpose, like slowing down like hell in corners."

Engineer: "Yeah, we saw that in Turn 11."

  19. Are McLaren under pressure?published at 22:45 BST 18 October

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra in Austin

Both McLarens were within a tenth of a second of being knocked out [in Q1]. That's what we're talking about: the margins are terrifyingly small.

They used to have the advantage of a car thet could go out and guarantee if they half pushed, they would easily get through. Now they're under pressure.

But I'm sure they're going to get it all back on course again in this next session. But it's signs of the team and the drivers are feeling the weight of that world championship getting heavier and heavier in their hands.

  20. Postpublished at 22:44 BST 18 October

Lots of push laps happening on the track. Max Verstappen puts his Red Bull into the top spot, his time is 1:32.701.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc pips Lando Norris to second spot.

Yuki Tsunoda has complained to the team radio that Liam Lawson is trying to distract him.
