The safety car is back out! Lance Stroll tries a move from quite far back on the inside of Esteban Ocon - and doesn't make it. The Canadian slams into the Haas and both are out of this sprint. What a start to this Saturday track action.
'Not a great way to start the day'published at 18:35 BST 18 October

McLaren's Oscar Piastri on Sky Sports: "I've not seen the incident from the TV cameras but I obviously had a pretty good start. We both went pretty deep into Turn One. I tried to cut back and got a hit, not a great way to start the day. I need to have another look."
The Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli wants that final points place off fellow rookie Ollie Bearman. The pair do battle, switching positions, and Bearman ends up running wide off the track. The stewards are going to investigate the Briton's move. for gaining an advatnage.
Lando Norris has reached the media pen and tells Sky Sports there is not a lot he could've done about that Turn One contact. Oscar Piastri says it's "not a great way to start the day", and agrees with his team-mate there was nothing he could've done either.

I think [George Russell] knew he hasn't got the car to compete against Max Verstappen. He took the opportunity when he had the DRS but it was a brave move and it could have unbalanced Max but actually Max has shown he has plenty of pace to open that gap.
Nico Hulkenberg, amazingly, is still in this race, while the two McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri watched on from the garage.
George Russell is informed on the team radio he has two strikes, both at Turn 12, for track limits. He flags to his engineer one of those will be for his battle with Max Verstappen, so it shouldn't count.

Verstappen is very happy with this car. Not only has he outqualified the McLarens but now they've been eliminated from this sprint race. He has closed the gap again. Although it is a long shot, Max is still in this title fight.
The Haas of Oliver Bearman has gone from 16th place up into the final points place in this sprint race. Yuki Tsunoda, too, has gained a load of places and now sits in seventh. Max Verstappen is still leading from pole, 2.4 seconds clear of George Russell.

Max Verstappen still leads this sprint following George Russell's move for power but now the Ferraris are going wheel-to-wheel. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are fighting hard and it's the seven-time world champion who eventually comes out on top. P4 for Hamilton, P5 for Leclerc.
Damon Hill 1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 2 in Austin
The two McLarens now, the whole team will be devoid of all the information they could have got from this sprint race that everyone else is still doing. No McLaren car will be giving data to the team and that may have consequences for tomorrow's race.
Russell tries to overtake Verstappenpublished at 18:22 BST 18 October

Lap 8/19
Charles Leclerc has been noted by the stewards for a safety car infringement, just as George Russell spies his chance to overtake Max Verstappen for the race lead. The Mercedes and the Red Bull both end up off the track as Russell goes on inside at Turn 12. "What was that?!" says Verstappen.
Mike Gatt: Most certainly that was Oscar's fault. He did a sudden change of direction to cut inside of Norris and turned straight into Hulkenberg's path.
DRS is back in the game as Max Verstappen and his Red Bull leads George Russell in his Mercedes by six tenths. Russell is chasing the Dutchman down the back straight, as his team-mate Kimi Antonelli tries, unsuccessfully, to pass the Alpine of Pierre Gasly for ninth.
Max Verstappen makes his move and leads a clean getaway this time out of Turn One. The top eight drivers now are Verstappen, Russell, Sainz, Leclerc, Hamilton, Albon, Tsunoda and Bearman.
What a frenetic start to the race and we thought it wasn't going to be like that but it absolutely was. Lots of different things coming together but my word the papers are going to be full of this. I've just seen Lando Norris going back upstairs to his dressing room, the team, this is absolutely not what they wanted. This is not harmonious, this is not what they need in terms of drivers' championship points.
