Bristol's Chris Wood eager for first Tour victory

Bristol's Chris Wood says he is "desperate" to claim his first European Tour victory.

The 23-year-old, who is based at Long Ashton, will compete in the BMW Championship in Germany this week.

Wood told BBC Points West: "I feel like I'm putting myself in the position more and more often, so I feel like it's only a matter of time.

"I've just got to stay patient, because I'm so desperate for my first win, you almost get in your own way."

He continued: "You've just got to let it happen.

"I'm a pretty steady player I'm that close and that desperate, I just feel like when I've got that the floodgates will open and a weight will be lifted off my shoulders."

Wood burst on to the scene after finishing joint-fifth in the 2008 Open Championship while still an amateur player.

After his success at Birkdale, he turned professional and has since been on the cusp of his maiden victory on several occasions, most recently at the Iberdrola Open in Mallorca, where he was edged out into a second-place finish by Darren Clarke.

But Wood is confident he is ready to seal a title.

"I've been happy with my long game for a while now, I've been hitting a lot of great shots on the golf course," he said.

"I've said a couple of times to my caddy 'not many people can hit shots like that' and I'm really happy with the state of my game.

"I'm struggling a little bit with my putting still, I'm lacking a little bit of practice.

"The course in Germany is a bit of a birdie-fest, you're going to have to hole a few putts so I'll be practising that.

"It can be very frustrating at times - I get too upset too quickly and it's something I need to work on.

"I've realised that I am getting in my own way a little bit and you can't play like that."
