Hampshire's Justin Rose suffered a Saturday to forget in rain-lashed Kent as his Open hopes were washed away.

Having shot a second round 70 to move within six shots of the leaders, Rose slid out of contention with a nine-over-par 79 at Royal St George's.

Four dropped shots in his first four holes set the tone as he went out in 39 and it got no better on the back nine.

Rose bogeyed 10, 11, 14, 15 and 18, coming home in 40 for his worst Open round since an 82 at Birkdale in 2008.

The hero of the Birkdale Open of 1998 - when he memorably chipped in at the last to secure a tie for fourth place (still his best Open finish) - does not have a happy record at Sandwich.

On his last appearance in Kent in 2003, he shot 79/80 to miss the cut on 17 over.
