Kenneth Ferrie's hopes of a decent Open finale were blown apart in the wind at Sandwich as he rattled up a 13-over 83.

The Newcastle man's worst round in 13 attempts at an Open Championship left him second bottom of the leaderboard.

"Rubbish," he told BBC Sport. "I actually played quite well again, but I've lost all confidence in my putting.

"The greens are bad enough to read anyway at the best of times but, with the wind blowing and a bit of a dodgy stroke, what can you do."

After dropping shots at the second and third, Ferrie ran up a triple bogey seven at the ninth.

He then suffered bogeys at 11 and 13 before another triple at the 15th was followed by a double at 17 and a final hole bogey to bring his Kent torment to an end.

"It's a recipe for disaster not being able to putt round here," said Ferrie, who had made the cut comfortably after a couple of one-over 71s on the first two days.

"No matter how many good shots you hit, you can't make up for bad putting. If you can't save yourself on the greens, then there's no way you're going to shoot a good score.

"But at least I've made The Open again after a five-year absence.

"I'm off to Sweden next week and then Ireland the following week and maybe we'll get some nicer weather."
