The Open 2013: Colin Montgomerie fails to qualify

Colin Montgomerie will not play in this year's Open Championship after a second-round 76 left him three over par in local final qualifying.

The eight-time European number one had been one shot off the lead after an opening-round 69 before falling away at Gullane.

"I got to five under and threw it away - never mind," he said.

"It's not my schedule. I just played badly this afternoon. I didn't get going at all."

Montgomerie's second round lasted over four-and-a-half hours.

"The pace of play was shocking but that's not the reason I played badly," added the 50-year-old.

"It's very disappointing after being five under."

English duo Ben Stow and Matthew Fitzpatrick and Swede Oscar Floren qualified from Gullane.

At Dunbar, Scottish amateur Grant Forrest reached his first Open by finishing ahead of fellow qualifiers Shiv Kapur and John Wade.

Lloyd Saltman secured his place along with Steven Tiley and Tyrrell Hatton at the Musselburgh while English amateur Jimmy Mullen qualified from North Berwick with George Murray and Gareth Wright.

The Open takes place at Muirfield from 18-21 July.
