Gareth Maybin eight shots behind leader at Gleneagles

Ballyclare golfer Gareth Maybin lies eight shots off the lead after the second round of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Maybin is tied for 19th place on six under following a 70, which included three birdies and a bogey.

Michael Hoey ended the day on four under after a 72 which ended with an eagle three at the 18th, but Gareth Shaw missed the cut on one under.

Ricardo Gonzalez leads on 14 under, one shot ahead of Bernd Wiesberger.

England's Mark Foster and Tommy Fleetwood are a further two shots behind the Austrian in third.

Hoey's second 18 holes also saw him card two birdies and four bogeys.

Shaw posted two bogeys on his outward nine but made an ultimately unsuccessful bid to make the cut with a run of five birdies and one bogey for a 69.

Irish pair Shane Lowry and Peter Lawrie join Maybin on six under, while Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley is also well placed on five under.

County Down-based professional Simon Thornton shot a 67 to move to three under, while Damien McGrane on one over and David Higgins on two over were a few shots off the cut mark.
