Gareth Maybin has missed the cut at the Dutch Open after firing a one-over-par 71 in Friday's second round.

The Ballyclare player, who started with a 72, was one under for the round before dropping shots at his final two holes to finish on three over.

Paul McGinley (67) and Damien McGrane (70) are the best of the Irish at the Kennemer course on five under with Shane Lowry (68) three under.

Spanish pair Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal lead on nine under.

Simon Thornton (68) ended on two under with David Higgins (67) and Kevin Phelan (68), who is playing his first event as a professional after joining the paid ranks following last weekend's Walker Cup, a further shot back.

Padraig Harrington and Peter Lawrie finished on level after both shooting 69s.

Maybin's European Tour card is secure for next season with him currently 77th in the Race to Dubai standings.

The 33-year-old was tied for 22nd at last week's European Masters in Switzerland.
