Michael Hoey ended in a tie for second place at the Tshwane Open in South Africa after posting a final round of four-under-par 68 to lie 17 under.

Hoey carded an eagle, four birdies and a double bogey in his closing 18 holes to tie with Danie van Tonder.

The Belfast player had started the day five shots behind England's Ross Fisher and the former Ryder Cup player went on to win the tournament by four shots.

For Fisher, it was his first European Tour title for three years.

Ireland's Kevin Phelan finished with a 70 to end joint sixth on 13 under.

Shane Lowry recorded a 75 for four under at the Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate.

Hoey began the tournament with a steady round of 69 on Thursday, but it was an impressive 65 on Friday which really moved him into contention.

A further round of 69 on Saturday saw him well placed to challenge on Sunday and an eagle and two birdies on his outward nine further enhanced his chances.

Hoey cut Fisher's lead from five shots to two after going through his first five holes in three under and he closed the gap to just a single shot with a birdie at the 11th.

A double bogey six at the 12th ended any realistic hopes of winning the tournament, but a birdie at the 15th saw him move up to joint second with South African van Tonder.
