Ladies Scottish Open: Trish Johnson wins title aged 48

Johnson recovered from a back injury to win the Ladies Scottish Open

England's Trish Johnson became the oldest winner on the Ladies European Tour after clinching the Scottish Open at the age of 48.

Johnson took a six-shot lead into the final round at Archerfield Links in East Lothian and finished two strokes clear of France's Gwladys Nocera.

"I wasn't expecting this," said Johnson, who ended seven under par.

Johnson almost withdrew from the tournament earlier in the week with a back injury.

She thanked the Ladies European Tour osteopath and masseuse, Chris Wilkes and Amanda Bailey, in her victory speech.

Johnson partnered former BBC football pundit Alan Hansen in the pro-am tournament, which ran simultaneously

"I had very low expectations and I guess that worked for me," she said. "I am chuffed to bits with the victory."

Australians Rebecca Artis and Stephanie Na were a stroke behind Nocera in a share of third place, with Scotland's Sally Watson on four under.

Johnson carded rounds of 66 and 70 going into Sunday and birdied the second and third to move to 10 under, but suffered a double bogey at the seventh and dropped a shot at the 14th for a final round of 73 and a 54-hole total of 209.

"With a six-shot lead today, I think if I'd thrown that away in perfect conditions, well… it was a difficult one," added Johnson.

"I just didn't putt as well as the first two days but I didn't have the same mentality. I suppose that was because I was defending a little bit, which I didn't think I'd do."
