BMW Championship: American Billy Horschel wins in Denver

Billy Horschel of the United States won his second event on the US PGA Tour after a previous victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2013.

American Billy Horschel retained his overnight lead to win the BMW Championship by two shots as Sergio Garcia's challenge collapsed.

Horschel, 28, led by three going into the final round in Denver and sealed victory with a one-under-par 69.

Garcia was within two shots of the lead with two holes to play but the Spaniard carded a triple-bogey eight at the 17th as Bubba Watson (66) took second place.

Rory McIlory fired a final-round 66 to finish in a tie for eighth.

The Open Champion and world number one therefore goes into next week's final of the FedEx Cup series in fourth spot in the points' list, needing a victory at East Lake to win the play-offs.

"I would have loved to have gone into next week at number one or two which would have given me a better chance," said Northern Ireland's McIlroy.

"But I know what I've got to do. I've got to win. I still feel I'm playing good golf and in a field of 30 it's possible."

Horschel, from Florida, finished tied for second place in the previous PGA Tour event - the Deutsche Bank Championship - last weekend.

But this time he didn't falter, despite being pegged back at one stage on the front nine by Ryan Palmer.

Horschel made his third birdie of the round on the seventh and didn't drop any further shots as he held off all challengers, including Garcia, whose challenge imploded as he found water on the penultimate hole.

Horschel said: "I haven't had the greatest season but I had my game today. It feels good.

"Last week a lot of people called me a choker but I didn't choke. You don't choke coming from behind.

"To lead this thing and hold on means a lot."

Morgan Hoffman, 24, followed up his third-round 62 with a 63, including eight birdies and an eagle, to finish third and secure the top-30 place he needed in the play-off rankings to reach the FedEx finale, which begins on Thursday in Atlanta.
