Marc Warren says he can make the 2016 European Ryder Cup team if a new-found consistency leads to more improvements.

Scot Warren, 34, is currently 15th on the European Tour's Race to Dubai and 53rd in the world rankings.

When asked about being selected for the event at Hazeltine, which starts on 30 September next year, he said: "You need to be top 10 in the Race to Dubai.

"If I can do that and I'm a better golfer this time next year than I am now then there's a chance."

Two of his three European Tour wins came in 2006 and 2007, but Warren has developed a steadier streak and has been rewarded with a string of good finishes this season.

That included a second place at the Qatar Masters in January.

His form earned him a place at last week's WGC Match Play in San Francisco, where he won one of his three group games.

"My first few years I was either really hot or really cold," he told BBC Scotland.

"Now I've added consistency and I'm playing the best golf of my career by quite a long way."

Warren lost in a three-man play-off for the 2013 PGA Championship at Wentworth having come close during the previous year's Scottish Open.

He surrendered a three-shot lead on the final day at Castle Stuart, dropping four shots over the final four holes to miss a play-off by one stroke.

"My game has progressed massively since then," he added. "Moving inside the top 50 at start of the year, just outside at the moment.

"I was nowhere near that back then and I look back at that event as the kick up the backside I needed.

"The most important thing was believing that I could compete against a field of that quality.

"I was the best player for three-and-a-half days, but, unfortunately, I couldn't finish it off.

"You also learn to deal with disappointment and come back and play some good golf."
