Jason Day is still waiting for his first win in a major

Jason Day recovered from the disappointment of a near miss at The Open by winning the Canadian Open by a shot from American Bubba Watson.

The Australian failed with a crucial late putt to miss out on the play-off at St Andrews the previous weekend, which Zach Johnson ultimately won.

Day, 27, birdied the last three holes at Glen Abbey for a final round four-under 68 and 17 under overall.

Canada's overnight leader David Hearn finished two shots behind.

Had Hearn been able to hold on to his two-shot lead, he would have been the first homegrown winner in 61 years.

He still held a one-shot lead playing the 16th but Day and Watson, who made birdie on five of his six closing holes, both moved past him with strong finishes.

Day ended the tournament in style by rolling in a 22-foot putt at the par-five 18th for his second PGA Tour win of the season.

He said: "It's just a really good feeling because whenever you win an Open championship of any country you're doing something good.

"For it come after what happened last week, and to be able to hit that putt, I'm just over the moon right now."
