American Scott Brown hit eight birdies in his final 11 holes to share the lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The 32-year-old joins compatriot Andrew Loupe at the top of the first-round leaderboard in San Diego following a six-under-par 66.
Australian defending champion Jason Day, who has been suffering with a virus, carded a 72 at Torrey Pines.
Scotland's Martin Laird is the best-placed Briton in tied 15th, after a three-under round of 69.
Ireland's Shane Lowry and England's Justin Rose are one under in a tie for 54th.
American Rickie Fowler, who won last week's European Tour event in Abu Dhabi, struggled with his putting in his one-over-par 73.
