Stephanie Meadow: Jordanstown golfer misses out on place at Olympic Games

Stephanie Meadow did not qualify for last week's US Women's Open in California

Stephanie Meadow has missed out on an Olympic place after the International Golf Federation published its final list of qualifiers for the event.

Jordanstown woman Meadow's chances of a late call-up have diminished from last week when she was first reserve for 18 of the prospective 60 qualifiers.

Meadow, 24, is now second reserve to 16 of the field as the world's top women have opted to commit to the Games.

Cavan amateur Leona Maguire has secured an Olympic spot for Ireland.

In contrast to the series of withdrawals from the men's competition, mainly because of fears over the Zika virus, South Africa's Lee-Ann Pace is the only women's qualifier who has pulled out of the games.

Northern Irishwoman Meadow finished an impressive third behind winner Michelle Wie at the US Women's Open two years ago but has struggled for form over the past year following the death of her father.

With Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry having pulled out of the men's event because of their concerns over the Zika virus and Graeme McDowell not available because of his wife's pregnancy, Padraig Harrington and Seamus Power will compete for Ireland in Rio.
