England's Tyrrell Hatton is two shots off the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship, with Rory McIlroy a shot further back at Quail Hollow.
Hatton was one of five players to card a four-under first round 67, but they trail American John Peterson by two.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy's shot a 68 in his first tournament since last month's Masters, where he faded to finished fifth.
Fourteen-time major winner Tiger Woods finished level par in North Carolina.
English pair Paul Casey and Ross Fisher are on two under, with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood on three over.
Masters champion Patrick Reed also ended on level par, while world number two Justin Thomas finished two over on the same course where he won the PGA Championship last year.
World number seven McIlroy, who is aiming for his third win in the tournament, said: "I love this place. I feel like I don't have to play that well and I can still get it around."
