Meet Owen Crooks. A local professional here in Northern Ireland who answered the call to help out US Open champion JJ Spaun.

Now it was belting it down on the range yesterday evening when I grabbed a few words with him. I tried - and failed - to get a sneak peak on what he's been telling the JJ Spaun.

    Brian McLauchlin
    BBC Scotland at Royal Portrush

Daniel Young has "picked Bob MacIntyre's brains" about playing at Royal Portrush.

MacIntyre's fellow Scot Young, 30, is playing at his first major and is ranked 472nd in the world.

US PGA tour golfer MacIntyre finished sixth the last time the Open Championship was held at Portrush in 2019.

"I picked Bob's brains a tiny bit about when he had his great finish in 2019," Young told BBC Scotland.

"It was good just to catch up with him, to be honest. I haven't seen him in a few years, obviously he's on a different path than me at the minute.

"But it was good to catch up and see how his game was and things like that."

  9. Rose news conference overpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 16 July

That brings Justin Rose's news conference to an end.

Let's have a look back out on the course to see who is out and about.

  10. 'Lot of birdie opportunities out there'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 16 July

    Justin Rose on Royal Portrush:

"It's got everything. Tough enough off the tee where you've got to respect it. The rough is thick but there is opportunity out of the rough.

"There will be different win directions this week so my practice trip earlier in the month was valuable. There's a lot of birdie opportunities on this course too.

    "It's a great mix."

  11. 'It's very chaotic' - Rose on practicepublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 16 July

Justin Rose on preparing at Royal Portrush:

"Preparation around majors is something I have taken seriously for 10-15 years now, and I feel I have done it differently to other folks and I have invested the time in major championships.

"Honestly the last couple of days have been very difficult to prepare. It's very busy out there.

"Lots of crowds and a lot of people want a piece of you, autographs and all sorts. And you're playing in fourballs, a tonne of people inside the ropes and it's very chaotic- and I feel like it's not an environment to learn the golf course at all."

  12. 'It was cool' - Rose on Scheffler's commentspublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 16 July

Rose on Scottie Scheffler's comments on Tuesday:

"It was cool to see that golf is what he loves to do but it doesn't define him so that was great to hear honestly.

"I've been in the similar situation in terms of getting to world number one. It's something you strive, and strive and strive for, and when you achieve it, it's like 'oh okay' - it's not what you imagine it to be but the work and journey to get there is the thrill and the exciting part, and I think that's still what keeps me going really. Can I be better tomorrow as a golfer and a person than I am today?- and that's enough.

"Do you want it to manifest into tournament wins and ticking off your dreams - but really the process and the journey is really where you have to find the enjoyment."

Maybe not quite Rory-mania, but Scottie Scheffler's autograph hunters were out in full force this morning.

Scheffler did not make it over to this lot, but he did toss a few balls up to the kids in the grandstand on the other side before wandering down the tunnel.

The world number one will have an even bigger crowd shadowing him tomorrow. He's out with 2019 champion Shane Lowry and 2021 winner Collin Morikawa at 10:09 BST.

  18. Weather warning for Thursday at The Openpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 16 July

    Barra Best
BBC News NI senior weather presenter

The forecast looks promising for Padraig Harrington’s early tee time at 06:35, with dry conditions expected for the opening shots of The Open championship.

However, a thunderstorm warning will be in full effect by the time local favourite Rory McIlroy tees off at 15:10.

The Met Office alert, which covers the Portrush area, lasts from 11:00 - 20:00 BST on Thursday.

Course conditions could deteriorate if showers hit, with waterlogged fairways and slower greens likely to pose a challenge for players.

Spectators may also feel the impact, with heavy downpours, hail, and thunderstorms potentially affecting comfort, as well as transport to and from The Open.
