European captain Luke Donald says Sunday's singles in the Ryder Cup was the "most stressful 12 hours of my life".

Donald's side took a 11½-4½ lead into the singles but the US fought back and almost pulled off a miraculous victory.

Only Ludvig Aberg won a full point and Europe edged over the line when a blowout had been mooted.

The Americans put up a fight that will be talked about for decades to come, but in the end Europe sneaked a 15-13 victory.

"Shout out to the Americans and Keegan, his captaincy. We knew they'd be tough, we didn't think they'd be this tough on Sunday," Donald said.

"It was so nerve-wracking, the most nerve-wracking I've ever been on a golf course, and I wasn't hitting a shot. I can't imagine what these guys felt, but they got it done."

Donald believes his side - the first to win in the US since 2012 - will be "talked about for generations".

"They fought so hard and all respect to them, but this means a lot obviously to me and the team," he added.

"We came here knowing the task would be very difficult.

"I couldn't have been more proud of these guys, what they've gone through, how they've come together, how they're playing for history, how they're playing for the people who came before them and now they'll be talked (of) for generations to come that will go down in history.

"It almost hasn't sunk in yet, the way things turned out the last few hours. The US had a lot of support behind them and they made it very difficult, but I'm glad we got it over the line."

  2. US captain Bradley reflects on mistakespublished at 00:38 BST 29 September

US captain Keegan Bradley admits he would do things differently if he had his time again after Europe edged to Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black.

The US side fought back in the singles after being dominated over the first two days - but Europe prevailed 15-13 and retained the trophy.

Bradley's pairings were questioned in the foursomes and fourballs, although he was praised by world number one Scottie Scheffler.

"Europe are a tough group. We didn't play our best the first couple days, but we did on Sunday. That was really fun. We had all of our fun in one day here at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

"I think I would have set the course up a little different, looking back. But I don't know, they played better than us. They deserved to win. They're a great team.

"In my eyes, Luke Donald is the best European Ryder Cup captain of all time.

"I really enjoyed doing this. I never thought I'd get to be a Ryder Cup captain. I'll never forget it. It was amazing."
