Grand National winner Ryan Mania to remain in hospital

Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania will spend a second night in hospital following a fall at Hexham on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Scot, who won Saturday's National on 66-1 shot Auroras Encore, suffered neck and back injuries in the fall.

He hopes to be released on Tuesday following a precautionary MRI scan.

His agent Bruce Jeffrey said : "If the scan is clear and all goes well, he could be riding again by next weekend."

That means he may well be fit to ride Auroras Encore in the Scottish National at Ayr on 20 April - should trainer Sue Smith decide to run the Grand National winner in that race.

While Mania is wearing a neck collar, he has been up and walking around, Jeffrey told BBC Sport.

He was riding Stagecoach Jasper for trainer Smith at the Northumberland track just hours after posing for photographs with the National winner at the Smith stables in West Yorkshire.

Mania appeared to suffer a heavy kick between his shoulder blades after his horse fell, and was treated for more than half an hour at the track before being airlifted to hospital. He was conscious as he was put into the air ambulance on a spinal board.

His injuries were assessed as "severe/serious" at the course but he was later said to be stable at the hospital.
