Sir Henry Cecil: Late trainer honoured at Epsom Oaks

The 2014 Investec Oaks at Epsom will be run in memory of Sir Henry Cecil in recognition of the late trainer's close association with the race.

Cecil, who died in June 2013 aged 70 after a battle with cancer in his later years, trained eight winners of the Oaks between 1985 and 2007.

Trainer Lady Cecil, Sir Henry's widow, says the move is a fitting tribute.

"I was delighted when I heard that Epsom wanted to celebrate Henry's life by staging it in his memory," she said.

"The Oaks is the Classic in which Henry enjoyed the greatest success with a total of eight victories.

"They were all special to him, but I can vividly recall his immense pleasure when Light Shift won the race in 2007 for the Niarchos family. That was such a wonderful day for Henry and everyone at Warren Place."

Andrew Cooper, head of racing and clerk of Epsom racecourse, added: "His record in this race was exceptional.

"We are honoured the Investec Oaks has been named in memory of Sir Henry Cecil."
