Jason Maguire wins at Newton Abbot on return from injury

Before he was sidelined, Maguire rode 130 winners last season

Jockey Jason Maguire made a winning return at Newton Abbot six months after he was in a coma following a fall.

The Irishman scored on 5-6 favourite Bonne Fee, trained by Kim Bailey, in the mares' novice hurdle (14:15 BST).

Maguire, who won the 2011 Grand National on Ballabriggs, suffered a fractured sternum and had part of his liver removed after falling at Stratford in March.

The 34-year-old was injured on the eve of the Cheltenham Festival.

On his second ride back, Maguire was third with Mr Satco, for Donald McCain, at Newton Abbot.

He heads to Worcester's evening meeting to partner Toe To Toe for trainer Lucy Jones.

Maguire, the nephew of former top jockey Adrian, was injured at Stratford when unseated from his mount Scots Gaelic in a handicap hurdle and kicked in the stomach by another horse.

He was one of five high-profile jockeys to suffer bad falls in March. Bryan Cooper, Ruby Walsh and Daryl Jacob were all sidelined with broken bones after being injured at Cheltenham, while Martin Harley fractured four ribs and a bone in his neck at Lingfield.
