Slade Power failed to shine in his last race before being retired to stud as he finished down the field in the Darley Classic at Flemington.

The Eddie Lynam-trained horse was seeking a third Group One win having already won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and Newmarket's July Cup under Wayne Lordan.

When his rivals quickened, Slade Power was unable to respond.

The race in Australia was won by home challenger Terravista.

A late charge from Terravista put the horse ahead of favourite Chautauqua with Australia's horse of the year Lankan Rupee third.

David Power, of Slade Power's owning family, said: "Wayne said the ground was plenty hard enough and he just eased up on him at the end."
