Two Darryl Lloyd goals helped Belfast Giants earn a 2-1 victory in Sheffield in Sunday's Elite League clash.
There was some doubt over who got Belfast's opening strike in the first period but Lloyd was credited with the goal after Mark Garside's initial shot.
Simon Ferguson levelled early in the second period but Lloyd hit the winner early in the final period in Sheffield.
Nottingham Panthers stay four points ahead of the Giants after they routed Coventry Blaze 8-0 on Sunday.
However, the Giants have a game in hand on the leaders.
Belfast's next game will be Thursday's home contest against Braehead (19:00 GMT).
Sunday's win completed a successful weekend for the Giants after their 4-1 home victory over Coventry on Friday night.
