Europe's Graeme McDowell on his relationship with Rory McIlroy: "The older brother, younger brother thing that we had is not the same any more. He is a four-time major winner and the world number one. The dynamic between the two of us may have changed forever and maybe I need that leadership role.

"I found the better-ball format with him in Medinah very hard because he would hit it 350 yards down the middle off the tee and I would be standing over my tee shot and find myself thinking 'there is not a lot of point in me hitting this' while trying to throw everything into it.

"It was not good for my game.

"I would embrace the chance to play foursomes with Rory. I think everyone in the world would love to play off his tee shot.

"But I have spoken to [captain Paul] McGinley about this and he had something similar with Padraig Harrington when he became the star and it changed their partnership."

Europe's Graeme McDowell: "I feel I come here a lot more prepared than I was in Medinah, where I was low on energy and did not play as well as I would like to.

"I want to really embrace this week with my eyes up rather than head down and feeling the pressure.

"That back nine against Hunter Mahan in 2010 was the most nerve-racking experience of my life and to make the birdie at 16 and win that point was one of the high points of my career.

"There is nothing quite like the team atmosphere and playing for each other in a sport that is innately individual. Golf can be quite selfish, but the openness that everyone has at the Ryder Cup as we share, do whatever we can for each other to try and make sure that we win.

"We watched the video in the team room last night that showed how far the European Tour has come from the days when we used to get drummed in every Ryder Cup, through to the days of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal, when Europe realised that they could compete, and to the present day when we have won seven out of the last nine."

"Rickie Fowler's haircut continues to dominate the early Ryder Cup exchanges. Asked if he is aware that the American tyro had shaved 'USA' above his ear, Europe's most experienced player Lee Westwood replied: 'I've seen it. I've touched it. I gave it a stroke yesterday on the range.'

"Will Westwood follow suit? 'I know I've got a big head, but I don't know if it's big enough to fit 'Europe' on it.'"

Europe's Henrik Stenson: "I will try not to injure my team-mates this week with any pranks, but if it gets a little sad in the team room I can hopefully cheer it up a bit. It is a fun week and a memory for life. Some of my greatest golf memories are from the previous two Ryder Cups I have played in.

"You are always a little bit more sitting back when you are playing in your first because you do not know how it will play out, but I was certainly not quiet when I had that green wig on on the Sunday night in 2006.

"Now I am one of the more experienced members of the team with my age. I guess that Lee Westwood might need to be the new general and Ian Poulter is always very energetic as is Sergio Garcia. Hopefully I can step up and add to that."

Olympic champion Katherine Grainger returns to training as she weighs up a bid to compete at the Rio 2016 Games.

The British rower, who will be 40 when the next Olympics take place, took two years off from the sport after winning gold with Anna Watkins at London 2012.

Grainger, 38, told BBC Sport: "There are going to be big challenges ahead in coming back after two years away.

"But if I don't try, I'll always wonder 'what if?' and for me, that will be so much harder to live with."
