  4. FA county official suspended over sexist remark

    Football

A senior FA county official has been suspended for four months after telling a female referee "a woman's place is in the kitchen and not on a football field."

John Cummings, a vice president of the Northumberland County FA, made the comments in March this year to Lucy May, a referee development officer who was attending a referee workshop event when she asked Cummings about the possibility of officiating in the North East Sunday League.

She alleges Cummings rejected her request saying: "It's nothing against you personally but all the time I'm alive, a woman will never referee in my league". He added that she "wouldn't be able to handle it. A woman's place is in the kitchen and not on a football field."

An independent FA regulatory commission, led by solicitor and former Blackburn Rovers player Stuart Ripley, concluded that Cummings was guilty of a breach of FA rules relating to "abusive and/or insulting language", aggravated because of a specific reference to gender. Cummings may yet launch an appeal over the decision.

Muniesa says no such incident occurred after the Potters' win against Swansea, although he admits the Spaniard is frustrated by a lack of game time.

"In pre-season he scored three or four goals and everybody thought he would play, but he isn't having opportunities," he told the Stoke Sentinel, ahead of Wednesday night's League Cup tie against Southampton. "Every player when he doesn't play is frustrated. But he is training really well and will have his chance."

Yekaterina Dmitrenko a defender for Russia's national women's team and FC Rossiyanka has spoken to the BBC about the inequality in pay between men and women.

She told BBCRussian.com: "That's not fair to be paid less than men. We basically do the same work as men. This is the same game, we have same physical training. We also have lots of injuries - torn ligaments, regular fractures. All is the same. And we would like to have some equality regarding prize money and salaries."

    Mario Balotelli

Why always him? Mario Balotelli's Liverpool critics continue to grow with former Reds striker John Aldridge now calling for the Italian to be dropped.

In Aldrige's Daily Post column, he says: "I believe the time has come to take Mario Balotelli out of the firing line. The eyes of the world are on the Liverpool striker at the moment, he's getting battered from all sides and he's clearly struggling to handle all the pressure.

"Forget shirt swaps and all the other stuff with him, the bottom line is that he's not scoring goals and that's a big problem."

    Football

Police will not take any action against Mario Balotelli after the Liverpool striker was accused of using threatening behaviour towards a woman.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police opened an investigation on Thursday following a complaint from a resident in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester that the 24-year-old had confronted a woman who was taking pictures of his Ferrari.

However, the woman has now decided not to make a formal complaint and the case has been closed.

You can't force a race organiser to pay out prizemoney they don't have when they don't have sponsorship. Until the sustainable model is there, there wont be sponsorship to pay out the prizemoney."

  81. Massaro on equal prizemoney

    Squash

Leading squash player Laura Massaro has been speaking about the BBC Sport survey which reveals men get more prize money than women in 30% of sports. Last year Massaro earned $17,850 for winning the World Open while Nick Matthew won $48,000 for winning the men's equivalent.

    Laura Massaro

"It's a little bit disappointing," she tells the Today programme. "As a woman competing you're obviously giving it your best and you feel you should be equal to your male counterpart. But in squash we are playing under different tours.

"It is disappointing that there is such a big gap. But the women's tour is a little bit weaker than the men's. If in the future the two tours can join together then the women's game can raise itself a little higher and that pinnacle, the World Open, will push itself to a higher level and hopefully become what the men's is.

"It's also important to say that of the 36 joint events in squash, 22 are already paying equal prize money. It's just that high end, at the top end of the rankings where a little bit more parity would be amazing."

Should women be paid the same as men and why? Here are a couple of your comments:

AVP1982: Prize money should be relevant to the income that is generated by that sport and not driven by gender. The discrepancy in figures highlighted within the article are simply highlighting the lesser interest in female sports from a investment and follower perspective

Redpirate: A way to solve this is by having the male and female versions of the event running together. That way all of the sponsorship money can be pooled together and split evenly. However FIFA & the ICC for example would then get reduced income because they now have half the number of tournaments that can be commercially sold. Not going to happen.

  83. Sport funding

UK Sport could be ready to reconsider its 'no compromise' approach to funding elite sport.

The government agency is to launch a public consultation for the first time to decide its future strategy.

UK Sport invests £100m of National Lottery and government money into high-performance sport each year, and its medals-based policy has underpinned Britain's recent Olympic and Paralympic success.

But there has been criticism of this method, and the review will be welcomed by sports such as basketball that have suffered funding cuts.

We are asking should all sports pay equal prize money after BBC Sport's survey on prize money. Here are some of your thoughts.

Georgina Hawkes on Facebook: Premier League gets 30-70,000 fans each game, League 2 gets 5-8,000 therefore prize money is lower. Exactly the same for women's. If they don't generate the money from supporters, sponsors, tv then why should they get as much? And yes, I am female. Not everything has to be equal.
