Vanessa-Mae bids to overturn ban

Violinist Vanessa-Mae will attempt to overturn her four-year skiing ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland on Tuesday.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) imposed the sanction in November for her role in "manipulating" results to qualify for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Sunderland suspend Adam Johnson

Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has been suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old.

A club statement said: "Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time."

Max Chilton will drive at Le Mans

Former Formula 1 driver Max Chilton will compete in this year's Le Mans 24-Hour race in June.

The Briton, who raced for two years in F1 with Marussia, will drive for Nissan at the World Endurance Championship opener at Silverstone on 12 April.

Welsh cycling will have its first professional team next year with the ultimate goal of having riders competing at the Tour de France.

The 'We are Wales' (WAW) Pro Cycling Team was launched in Cardiff today and plans to represent the country on the professional circuit throughout Europe.

Welsh cycling has had some exciting times in recent years with Olympic champions Nicole Cooke and Geraint Thomas (pictured) enjoying huge success on the track and the road.

Crystal Palace's Jedinak charged with violent conduct

Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after appearing to elbow West Ham's Diafra Sakho.

Jedinak, 30, looked to catch Sakho near the end of the game as Palace won at Upton Park on Saturday.

The incident was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, allowing the FA to take retrospective action.

Jedinak has until 18:00 GMT on Tuesday to respond to the charge.

Liverpool have recorded a profit for the first time in seven years.

Figures released for the financial year ended 31 May 2014 show the club made a pre-tax profit of £0.9m, which is a considerable improvement on the £49.8m loss of the previous year.

The figures underline the progress the club have made since their takeover by Fenway Sports Group's and Boston Red Sox boss John W Henry in 2010.

Padraig Harrington wins Honda Classic

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington beat Daniel Berger in a play-off to win the Honda Classic - his first victory in the US or Europe for seven years.

The 43-year-old saw off the US rookie after the pair were tied at six under in a dramatic rain-delayed tournament.

Three-time major winner Harrington double bogeyed the 17th in his fourth round but sunk a 15-foot putt on 18.

And 119 starts after he won the 2008 US PGA title, the Dubliner clinched victory on the second deciding hole.

Fifa has increased Michael Boateng's lifetime ban for match fixing. It is now a worldwide lifetime ban.

The Englishman admitted to charges against him by the Football Association for several breaches of their rules, "including accepting a bribe, which was, or appeared to be, related to seeking to influence the outcome or conduct of a match or competition. The player also admitted to the charge of failing to report the offer made to him. The charges relate to matches in the Conference South in the sixth tier of the English football league system in 2013".

Clough's form 'not surprising'

Bolton Wanderers' 19-year-old striker Zach Clough has said he has not surprised himself by scoring goals since he broke into the first team.

Clough has scored six goals in nine games since netting on his debut in the FA Cup against Wigan in January.

"I'm enjoying it. I've waited all my life to get to where I am and it's just all coming at once and hopefully it continues," Clough told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I'm not surprised because I've worked hard to get where I am.

"I've always scored goals at every level and it's just working now in the Championship. I believe in what I'm doing and I believe in my ability."

Ireland's Padraig Harrington has forced a play-off against Daniel Berger, of the United States, in the Honda Classic.

Three-time major winner Harrington, without a win in the US or Europe since 2008, double bogeyed the 17th at the event in Florida.

But he holed a 15-foot putt for a birdie to tie at six under with Berger, who is seeking his maiden Tour win.

After his fifth-round stoppage against Chris Avalos to retain super-bantamweight title, Carl Frampton is looking at Scott Quigg as his next challenger.

"I'd love to fight Scott Quigg in a summer showdown. It would be massive. It should happen," said Frampton.

"I would leave Belfast if I had to. If I have to travel for a fight against Scott Quigg, then that's OK."

Heptathlon star Katarina Johnson-Thompson has revealed that she turned down a promising career in ballet at the age of nine to focus on athletics. In an interview with The Guardian, KJT says she "broke her mother's heart" when she chose leggings and running spikes over the leotards and Pointe shoes.

Back to Gus Poyet now and he's had more to say on Wes Brown's red card against Manchester United on Saturday being rescinded.

"The honesty of the referee, the honesty of the referees' association and the FA and the Premier League - in other situations, it would be a little bit awkward because when it's a mistaken identity, you have got two players involved, one who has done something and the other one who has been sent off," he added.

"But like I said, it's good. It's the way I like.

"One of the best things in life - and football is part of our life - is to live by the rules and be honest."

Chelsea and Everton misconduct fines

It's been a busy day of decisions at the FA and the latest one to emerge from HQ is that Chelsea and Everton have been fined £30,000 for misconduct in their match on 11 February.

Chelsea won the match at Stamford Bridge 1-0 courtesy of a late strike from Willian, but the incident that caused most controversy happened in the 86th-minute.

Both clubs were charged with failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour.

The charge against Chelsea further alleged their players surrounded the referee and/or became involved in a mass confrontation.

Chelsea and Everton both admitted their charge and as well as being fined were also warned as to their future conduct.

Time to hear from Sunderland manager Gus Poyet now and he's been reacting to the news Wes Brown's appeal for wrongful dismissal has been upheld.

"It just been rescinded, and it's very important for me and for English football, the way everything has been dealt with," he said.

"The rules, everybody has followed at the FA, so honesty has been at the top of this situation, which is great. It's great for football, so I am very pleased.

Brendan Rodgers or "Brodge" as Noel Gallagher renamed him on MOTD2 a couple of weeks ago, has said that Liverpool can win all of their remaining Premier League matches. Currently on an 11 match unbeaten run, they are now fifth in the table, two points from third placed Arsenal.

"It takes a little bit of time to get going and bringing in a certain method of play," he told a news conference. "We had to stay strong during a tough moment. We've found the solutions and we're playing at a high level.

"It's tight. Arriving in there has always been our objective," he said of the top four. "We want to keep chasing right to the end.

"Every game is super competitive and every team has got quality. We are going into every game respecting the opponent but believing we can win."

Wigan collapse 'not acceptable'

Sticking with the 13-man code for a while and Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane criticised his side after they let a 14-point lead slip in Sunday's Super League loss at Hull KR.

Eight days after their extra-time defeat by Brisbane in the World Club Series, Wigan were leading 20-6 in the second half but had no response as Rovers scored three unanswered tries to seal a 22-20 win.

Asked if the Brisbane game affected Wigan's performance, Wane told BBC Radio Manchester: "It probably did. It's a tough game, we played for 90 minutes but that's the way it is. We chose to do it.

"I still think we could have come here and won the game quite comfortably. We were just dumb with the ball and just not acceptable."

New Owls owner targets Premier League

Back to football now and Sheffield Wednesday's new owner Dejphon Chansiri wants to gain promotion to the Premier League within two years.

The Thai businessman officially took over the club from Milan Mandaric on Monday after a deal worth £37.5m.

The Owls are currently 10th in the Championship and 14 points off the play-offs. They celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2017 and Chansiri is hopeful they can be in the top division by then.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "We want to be back for our anniversary. We will do whatever is appropriate to invest in the club to get them to the Premier League."

Another fact for you about Chansiri is his family own one of the world's largest shares in tinned tuna production.

It has been a long time since we saw Andrew Flintoff with a pint in hand on a pedalo. The former England cricketer has waved goodbye to his days of heavy drinking, confirming it is down to health reasons.

Currently appearing on the Australian version of 'I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here', he listed the reasons he gave up the boozy nights.

"One, I genuinely thought I'd had enough of it. It catches up with me in the morning. And two, I suffer with depression and it doesn't help at all. I just hit rock bottom afterwards. So you're far better without it."

Some breaking news and the Football Association has upheld Wes Brown's claim of wrongful dismissal.

The Sunderland defender was sent off against Manchester United on Saturday for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

His one-match suspension has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The 5-0 thrashing by City was described as "pathetic" by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer on Match of the Day.

"The determination, character and persistence were there for everyone to see," Williamson told BBC Newcastle. "We were all aware of the importance on the back of last week's disappointing result.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has urged his side to "just shoot" in a bid to overturn a run of one goal in five Premier League games.

Saints are winless in their last three matches and have slipped out of the top four for the first time since December.

"We're not finding the net. It's frustrating but we need to take responsibility," defender Fonte told BBC Radio Solent. "No-one will criticise if you try and something doesn't come off - at least try and make something happen.

"Just shoot - it might hit someone and deflect in. That's what we've got to keep trying."

Ireland bid for 2017 World Cup

The Irish Rugby Football Union has submitted a bid to host the Women's Rugby World Cup in August 2017 at locations in Dublin and Belfast.

Irish Rugby hope to host the tournament pool stages at University College Dublin before moving to Belfast for semi-finals and finals at Queens University Sport and the newly developed Kingspan Stadium.

Irish women's rugby is on something of a high at the moment following an 11-8 win against England in the Women's Six Nations on Friday.

"The big four" to compete in Italy

Alberto Contador, Chris Froome, Vincenzo Nibali, and Nairo Quintana have all signed up to participate in the Tirreno Adriatico ("The Race of Two Seas"), a World Tour stage race through the mountains of Italy.

The big four (plus Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel) have not yet participated in the same race this season and it is unlikely this will happen again before the Tour de France in July.

Steve Bruce on the controversy surrounding Wes Brown's sending off against Manchester United: "I was watching the rugby yesterday afternoon and the referee, before he awarded a try, stopped to speak to the video official before making his decision.

"With the technology we've got, the goal line technology, I can't see the reason why the referee can't go to the fourth official and say, 'I'm undecided here about which one has committed the foul'.

"It was a foul, but he's obviously got it wrong. If he can stop the game for four or five seconds to review the footage, it can get the right decision."

He has been addressing the lack of goals from his side. "We need to be more ruthless in the box, but its not just the strikers, it's the team who need to create more chances. I need to be clear to the players in what we are trying to do and trying to reach."

Koeman was also asked where the team were aiming to finish in the Premier League table. "Champions League football is still possible if we win seven or eight of 11 matches but it will be difficult. If we win five of 11 games, that means 61 points and we will be playing European football."

Some good news, there are no fresh injuries to the team for the match against Palace.

"Violent behaviour" between Millwall and Rotherham fans

Rotherham have condemned the "unprecedented level of violent behaviour" of a section of Millwall fans after crowd trouble marred Saturday's Championship fixture at the New York Stadium. Sections of a 1,300-strong following from Millwall turned nasty after Rotherham scored an 85th-minute goal to seal a 2-1 win, which left the London club six points adrift in the bottom three.

After initially chanting for manager Ian Holloway's head, they turned their attention to the Millers fans and tried to invade home section of the ground, forcing riot police to intervene.

There were also reports of further trouble outside the ground after the game, with two stewards suffering injury and the windscreen of a car housing a disabled home supporter smashed.

Kurt Zouma was labelled "our new Marcel Desailly" by Jose Mourinho after the Capital One Cup final win.

With Nemanja Matic Mourinho selected defender Zouma in midfield for his 17th Chelsea appearance and the 20-year-old Frenchman did not look out of place in the 2-0 Wembley defeat of Tottenham.

That brought further comparisons to his compatriot Desailly, who played 222 times for Chelsea, and was comfortable in both defence and midfield.

"That is a lovely thing, what the boss said," Zouma said. "(But) it is too early to say that because Marcel Desailly is a legend of Chelsea".

"British Transport Police are investigating reports Chelsea supporters were involved in racist and abusive behaviour on a train between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly on Sunday evening.

"A BTP spokesman confirmed shortly after 22:30 GMT, officers were called to meet the train at Stoke.

"Officers from Staffordshire Police also attended and asked four men to leave the train.

"Two witnesses were spoken to and investigations continue."

"Worst feeling in the world" - Kane

Tottenham's Harry Kane says losing the Capital One Cup final was the "worst feeling in the world". Chelsea beat their London rivals 2-0 to win the League Cup for the first time since 2007. Kane has said despite the defeat, he is sure it will drive Tottenham on to win silverware of their own.

Norwich wins 'make promotion harder'

Striker Lewis Grabban claims Norwich City's attempt to win promotion back to the Premier League has been made more difficult by their surge in form.

The Canaries are third in the table, just one point outside the automatic promotion places, after six successive wins.

"Now that we've moved into the higher bit of the league, teams will try raise their game," Grabban told BBC Radio Norfolk.

King eyeing return to road

Olympic cycling champion Dani King dropped by MediaCityUK this morning to tell BBC Breakfast how she has rebuilt her confidence after a "freak" road accident that left her in intensive care.

King, who won gold in the team pursuit at London 2012, suffered five broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a crash on a regular training route in south Wales after a member of her group hit a pothole.

In October, the 23-year-old decided to switch from track to road cycling to ride full-time for team Wiggle Honda.

Here's an unusual story from lower down the football pyramid where Torquay United goalkeeper Jordan Seabright has quit football to become a car salesman in his home town of Poole.

The 20-year-old has played six Conference games this term since joining from Dagenham in the summer, his latest on 17 January at Altrincham.

"It's a really brave decision," Torquay boss Chris Hargreaves told BBC Sport.

"It's a decision that I don't think is necessarily the wrong decision, but the bigger factor is it disappoints me that he's lost that dream."

More boardroom exits at Ibrox

There's been more boardroom upheaval at Rangers as chairman David Somers has resigned only days before his future in the position was due to be voted on by shareholders.

The move was confirmed in a statement to the Stock Exchange earlier.

An extraordinary general meeting is being held at Ibrox on Friday, when the future of the current board is to be decided.

It is unclear if chief executive Derek Llambias and finance director Barry Leach will also go before Friday.

QPR post £9.8m losses

Premier League side QPR have filed their accounts for the year ending May 2014 which show the club posted a loss for the year of £9.8m.

In a statement, the club said expenditure was reduced by £22m, mainly driven by lower player costs and "this trend will continue in future years as the club will continue to bring losses down."

The club's shareholders have reiterated their long term support by writing off £60m of shareholder loans.

Sotherton theft gets reconstruction

The theft of a Commonwealth Games gold medal belonging to athlete Kelly Sotherton is set to feature on BBC's Crimewatch.

The former heptathlete and 400m runner and her family were asleep upstairs when the burglary took place in Sutton Coldfield overnight on 17 February.

The burglars also took nine AAA British medals, about six Island Games medals and other items including a computer.

Sotherton said the burglary of the medal she won in 2006 in Melbourne was "really unnerving".

Grand Slam goodbye

Switching sports now to rugby union and Ireland remain on track for a Six Nations Grand Slam after they inflicted a first defeat of the championship on England in Dublin on Sunday.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster remains hopeful his side can still win the title despite 19-9 defeat.

There are very few Grand Slam teams," Lancaster said.

"In the majority of years you end up with a team winning the championship that has lost one game along the way.

"We have two games at home and it's critical we get as much out of those as we can."

"It says to me that Kevin needs to get a meeting with Colin Graves as soon as he can and, preferably, with Paul Downton and James Whitaker there after he has spoken to the chairman, because he wants to be clear," Boycott said.

"It's alright the chairman saying he has to play county cricket, but if he does that and gives up a lucrative IPL contract and Downton and Whitaker are still not going to pick him, that's kind of like leading him on isn't it? And that's not fair."

Elsewhere in Sunday's Premier League action, Olivier Giroud rewarded manager Arsene Wenger's support with a goal as Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 to climb back to third.

Wenger kept the striker in his starting line-up even though he missed several chances during Wednesday's 3-1 Champions League defeat by Monaco.

Away from Chelsea's Wembley win on Sunday, there was an eventful afternoon of Premier League drama too.

Liverpool dented Manchester City's pursuit of Mourinho's men thanks to two superb goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho in a 2-1 win at Anfield.

Despite the set-back, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists his side "must keep fighting" if they are to retain their Premier League title.

Moving away from football briefly and to cricket where the England and Wales Cricket Board has moved to clarify the situation over sacked batsman Kevin Pietersen returning to the England team.

Incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves said the first step back for the 34-year-old would be to play county cricket.

But an ECB spokesperson said: "Colin Graves is correct. Nothing has changed.

"Only players who are playing consistent high-quality county cricket and who are seen as a positive influence will be selected."

In another twist to the saga, this morning the player himself tweeted: Incredibly humbling how supportive you've all been since the news broke yesterday from Mr Colin Graves. Gonna try work this out for sure!
