But the world champion's advantage is sure to come under attack this weekend from Porte and Thomas, who are one and three seconds behind respectively. Welshman Thomas is likely to support the Australian's bid for overall victory.

Kwiatkoswki may need to gain some time in Saturday's sixth stage from Vence to Nice as Porte is expected to be strong in Sunday's concluding 9.5km time-trial up Col d'Eze.

Gareth Bale is under heavy fire in Spain today, unwittingly finding himself the biggest victim in the fall-out from Real Madrid's recent loss of form.

Los Blancos' 4-3 home defeat by Schalke on Tuesday, which nearly knocked them out of the Champions League, was seen as the final straw and has led to an ugly power struggle between club president Florentino Perez and the country's most influential sports newspaper, Marca.

And Bale is, harshly, being placed right in the middle of the battle.

Spanish football writer Andy West has the full story here.

  19. 'Falcao's days at United look numbered'published at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Carrington

"Listening to Louis van Gaal at Carrington this afternoon, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Radamel Falcao's days as a Manchester United player are numbered.

"Though Van Gaal praised Falcao's attitude, he also highlighted the fact some players who do well in one country find it difficult to replicate that form in another.

"Even more pointedly, when asked if he thought the Colombian could show the form that persuaded Monaco to pay Atletico Madrid £50m for him in the summer of 2013, Van Gaal swerved a direct answer.

"Instead, he pointed out the competition Falcao faces and that Wayne Rooney is now scoring goals.

"Falcao's loan is due to expire in 10 games' time, after which United must decide whether to pay £43.2m for him."

  20. Get involved - top fourpublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Some top four comments from the BBC Sport Facebook page.

Dave Swanwick: I'm a Man Utd fan, and would love to see them back in the Champions League, but this is my top four... 1) Chelsea 2) Man City 3) Arsenal 4) Liverpool. Breaks my heart to say that, but Man Utd need to sort themselves out first in my eyes. But I have been wrong before.

Colin John Rudd: It's not quite that simple and never is. Liverpool on form should win, chances are they will dominate and then Man Utd will pinch it on the break a bit like Chelsea did last year. That said, I think Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League! Expect an erroneous refereeing decision to decide it though!

Joseph Merrington: No one seems to mention Liverpool have to go to Arsenal the week after. They have to beat United and Arsenal. Lose either and any work they do will be undone. Even if they beat United and draw at Arsenal the fact United have to only beat Villa to leap frog them again puts more pressure on Liverpool. United fourth.
