    Gareth Southgate has been speaking about the decision to exclude Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.

    "I've spoken with Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal," he said. "Medically he is not going to be fit. We were always going to lose someone to fitness and, hopefully, he will be the only one."

    Southgate also said he was "able" to select the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley but was keen to reward those players who earned England qualification for the European Championship finals.

    Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw is left out due to injury, but there is a first call-up for Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

    Southgate will exclude four players before confirming his final squad.

    Craig Meschede smashed 68 from just 52 deliveries as Glamorgan battled to 314 on a rain-affected second day with Essex (183-4), while only 28 overs have been bowled over two days between Northants (107-2) and Surrey.

    Maro Itoje will prosper in England's World Cup training camp, according to Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall.

    The 20-year-old forward is set to be included in Stuart Lancaster's 50-man squad, which will be announced on Wednesday at 12:00 BST.

    Itoje captained England to the Junior World Championship title in 2014, but has only broken into the Saracens' first team this season.
