    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:48

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

A much better service game by Konta, holding to 15 to make it 4-2 and keep herself just a break away from getting back in this second set.

And, lo and behold, three awful points at the start of Halep's next service game and it's 0-40, three break points.

Time to get excited? Not quite, Halep hits back in gutsy fashion, racing through the enxt four pints to move to advantage. But then Konta - blimey, she 's a fighter - responds and gets to advantage herself. A fourth break point. Deuce. Halep hits a forehand out, A fifth break point. Ooo, the tension.

Would you believe it? Halep double faults. Game Konta and it's 4-3 and back on serve. This girl is good.

    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:38

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta is just looking a little tired for the first time, hitting a weak shot into the net after a punishing long rally.

The Brit produces a blistering return winner off one Halep serve, but the Romanian is definitely playing better in this set, making less unforced errors.

Having said that, serving at 40-15 she puts a routine backhand out and couldn't look more cheesed off had she just realised she'd locked her keys in the car.

But then the rally of the match. Both players land some heavy blows during a long exchange, both make loud Sharapova-like screaming noises after each shot, but Halep comes out on top and holds to 30. She's 4-1 ahead, second set.

    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:34

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

A little like Tiger Woods when he meant business in the final round of a big tournament, Konta is wearing a bright red top. It's stained in sweat. She's busting a gut out there.

But for the first time chinks in her armour have appeared.

Not helped by a double fault, Konta falls 15-40 behind on her own serve. Last time she fought back to hold. But no heroics this time. Halep takes the game and leads 3-1. A decisive moment? Has the pendulum swung back towards the Romanian?

It's been a hive of activity in the press room at Liverpool's training ground as manager Brendan Rodgers previewed their Europa League tie against FC Sion on Thursday night.

Daniel Sturridge won't be risked as he continues to work back towards full fitness: "We need to make sure we don't break Daniel Sturridge. He won't be involved in the game," Rodgers said.

    Brendan Rodgers

The Liverpool manager also says he won't have a problem if Roy Hodgson selects Sturridge for England's European qualifiers next month, but stressed that he wouldn't be able to play two games in four days.

Sturridge is expected to be involved in the derby at Goodison Park on Sunday: "We will keep him fresh for the weekend. He's still building his way towards fitness," Rodgers added.

    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:29

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

No doubt about it, Halep has upped her game. She moves 2-1 ahead in the second set (won by Konta 6-3), serving out to 15.

You don't get to the French Open final (which Halep did last year, losing to Sharapova in three sets) without having something about you.

However, she still looks a little unhappy and is clearly a bit taken aback by how well Konta is playing.

It's going to be intriguing to see how this contest pans out. You get the feeling the outcome of this set is going to be crucial.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says although he is keeping striker Daniel Sturridge fresh for Sunday's Merseyside derby with Everton, he would have no problem with England boss Roy Hodgson picking the forward for next month's international games.

England have already qualified for Euro 2016 with two games to spare.

Rodgers also confirmed 18-year-old Jordan Rossiter will feature in their Europa League group game with Swiss side FC Sion, after making his debut in the draw with Bordeaux in the same competition.

    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:25

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta's first serve percentage was 73% in the opening set, a clue as to why she took it.

But hang on. Danger signs. She's 0-30 down in her opening service game in the second set.

A terrific volley after a slightly heavy drop shot gets it to 15-30, but a scorching forehand from Halep (so that's why she's world number two...) brings up two break points for the Romanian - the first she's had on the Konta serve in the entire match.

The first is saved, the second too thanks to a big, big serve. Deuce. Overhead smash from Konta at the net. Advantage. Halep nets an easy backhand. Game Konta. 1-1.

  12. tennis

Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 30 September 2015

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

    So, into set two.

Halep doesn't look as though she's even broken sweat, but maybe that's because she's not really been able to get any rallies going against a so-far inspired Johanna Konta.

Halep desperately needs to get herself going. Holding the opening game of this second set would be a start.

At 40-15 up that seems a given, but she puts a routine forehand long, which kind of sums up the match.

Great angled forehand from Konta takes it to deuce. Chance of an early break perhaps? Erm, no. Big serve and then a drop-shot and Halep takes it. She's 1-0 ahead in the second but it was a struggle.

Bad, bad miss in the opening point of the game from Konta and another unforced error at 15-15.

Signs of tension creeping in as she aims to wrap up the set?

Possibly, but Halep misses badly herself. 30-30. And in the blink of an eye, Konta takes the set with two big serves.

6-3. Incredible stuff. Are we witnessing the birth of the next Great British tennis star? Nothing like putting unnecessary pressure on a rising sports star is there...

World Cup organisers should address the short turnaround between some matches, says Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

Wales face Fiji on Thursday having had only four days to recover from their bruising win against England.

"It's something we all need to be aware of because it's a pretty brutal game at the moment," Gatland said.

"I'm not complaining about the short turnaround because we've known about that for a long time. But it's important we consider and look after the welfare of our players."

Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 30 September 2015

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

No one has won more games on hard courts this season than Simona Halep.

She has 40 victories on the surface, so no wonder she is - or at least was - the overwhelming favourite to beat Konta at the start of play.

She takes the eighth game of the match to 30. But Konta leads 5-3 and is now serving for the set.

Great response. Some big serves put Konta 40-15 ahead.

Sh tries a drop shot to wrap up the game. Not her finest bu as Halep attempts to pass, Konta is there to punch home a volley. 5-2. One game away from the fist set.

It's early days yet but beating Halep would be the win of Konta's career thus far.

    Halep v Konta - livepublished at 12:05

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta, remember, has not only beaten former world number one Victoria Azarenka and German world number 17 Andrea Petkovic already at this tournament, but had to come through two rounds of qualifying to even get into the main draw in China.

Maybe fatigue might become an issue in this match? Konta certainly seems a little jaded in the sixth game, Halep winning it with ease to 15.

Back on the Konta serve, big game for her this.
