    Conor McNamara

BBC Radio 5 live at the Philips Stadion

Borussia Park was full of activity today. It's a gleaming modern stadium, but extra corporate hospitality tents were being erected in the car park to cope with the demand for this game. With new caretaker manager Andre Schubert looking to continue a 100% record since taking charge 10 days ago, there is a renewed optimism around the club.

Manchester City had better be switched on early tonight. Borussia Mönchengladbach have won their last two games, and the key has been a flurry of early goals.

They scored four goals in the opening 21 mins against Augsburg last week, and then two goals in the opening 20 mins against Stuttgart on Saturday.

Some posts on our BBC Sport Facebook page.

Tom Shunkey Esteves When I was at school, playing in goal for the team against another school, about 5 mins in, someone booted the ball in the air towards my end. It should have been an easy catch, but I let it bounce, which was a mistake. It bounced awkwardly and almost went over my head. I started frantically running backwards. The ball bounced a second time and hit the bar. For about half a second I felt relieved, but one of their players had chased the ball down the field and when the ball came back out he was just waiting to score an easy header.

Chris Machin It was last year with Ospina again, when we played Swansea and we were dominating all game until 5 minutes from time a cross come into our box and it gets headed at Ospina who fumbled it in..

  69. F1 star hasn't got driving licence

    Formula 1

Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen is celebrating his 18th brithday today, and says he's now looking forward to getting his driving licence!

The Dutch teenager was the first 17-year-old to race in Formula 1, but until now hasn't able to drive a road car in his home country of Belgium.

He passed his theory test before the season started, and now has to do mandator lessons with an instructor in Belgium, and joked he might not pass first time.

Why are English clubs struggling in Europe? BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been exploring the issue. Here are some of your comments from his blog.

Canaryboi: The Premier League has good players but too many, although technically gifted, are tactically naive or do not have the confidence of their managers to 'play the game' according to circumstances. Also, despite spending millions, some of the recent transfers don't add up, e.g. Benteke and Firmino in the same team - both expensive signings but they hardly complement each other. Again, tactical naivety.

  73. Konta beats Halep

    6-3 3-6 7-5

Konta (possibly sucking up to the crowd a bit): "Thank you to all of you for coming. You made a lot of noise and it is a wonderful stadium."

Her first serve percentage was 72%, that was the key to victory.

Konta, remember, had to play two matches just to qualify for this tournament. Sensational stuff.

Well done from us - right, I'm now off for a brief cuppa, Bill will take over for a while..

  74. But can you do it when it counts?

    Football

West Ham have been much better away from home this season than at Upton Park.  Mauro Zarate's proved he's got no problems playing at their training ground though...

  75. Konta beats Halep

    6-3 3-6 7-5

Konta will face Venus Williams in the quarter-final.

Interviewed on court, she said: "It was a very tough match. She played at an unbelievable level. I was really happy I was able to take a few of the chances I created.

"I feel humbled that I get the chance to come back tomorrow to compete again."

  76. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-7

    Konta wins

Astonishing, Konta recovers from 5-1 behind in the third set to win.

She has become only the third British woman to beat a top three player.

It is the biggest win of her career bar none and caps what have been a fantastic last few months.

That is 21 victories from her last 22 matches. This girl is on the way up, big time.

  77. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-7

    Konta wins

Halep, suddenly staring down the barrel, has to respond. She moves to 30-15, but then Konta manoeuvres her shell-shocked opponent around the court before volleying a winner. 30-30.

Halep goes wide with a backhand. Match point.

    And she's done it. Stunning.

  78. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-6

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Halep spends the entire break between the games with her hand held to her face. She's grimacing and generally looking very unhappy.

Konta has broken twice in succession. One more and she wins the match and chalks up the biggest victory of her career.

  79. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-6

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta loses the opening point but wins a long, long rally to make it 15-15. It's astonishing how she has been able to match up to and even dominate Halep at times in the long rallies.

Spoke too soon. A loose shot allows Halep to get to 15-30, but then Konta edges another fantastic rally to square it again. This is like a 12th-round slugfest between two heavyweights.

Konta serves an ace at the perfect moment. 40-30. One more will do it. Halep, credit to her, digs in and Konta nets with a weak-looking backhand. Deuce.

Good heavy Konta serve makes it advantage in the Brit's favour. And she wins another stunning rally to take the game.

6-5 Konta. Halep serving to stay it. Who would have thought it.

May we direct you towards this rather fine feature, written by BBC Sport's Jo Currie. Actually, you haven't got a say in the matter - we're going to anyway.

It begins: "Laura Harvey is possibly best known in the UK for her time in charge of Arsenal Ladies, where she guided the club to three consecutive Women's Super League titles, one FA Cup and two Continental Cups.

However, after moving to Seattle Reign in 2013, the 35-year-old is a big name in the United States of America too.

So how has the former Birmingham City Ladies player tamed the women's football world in America?"

  81. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-5

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

0-15. Konta takes the first point. 0-30. And the second.

Hang on, is Halep, the world number two, getting tight?

The Romanian, remember, led this final set 5-1 with a double break.

She produces a big serve to get it back to 15-30 but then Halep's pressure forces a mistake and it's 15-40 and two break points.

Brilliant backhand saves the first. But not the second. Super ground-strokes from the Brit and she takes the game.

Halep can't believe it. Neither can most others. Brilliant brilliant stuff. It's level and Konta to serve.

    Simona Halep
  82. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-4

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta starts the game well and moves to 30-15 courtesy of a couple of lovely shots. Amazing how they can still play lovely shots after 120 minutes of racing around.

Halep gets it back to 30-30 but a fine Konta forehand, right on the line, means Halep can only dolly it over the net, and the British number one duly puts the ball away. 40-30. And she takes the next pointtoo.

Suddenly it's 5-4. One more break and she's back in it. Can she do it...? Whatever happens, what a performance from Konta, who seems to be growing in stature every time she steps on a tennis court.

  83. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-3

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

    What a battler Konta is.

She scraps her way to 30-40 and a breakpoint. And Halep double faults. Well, that's a turn-up for the books. There's life in this one yet.

  84. Palace sign Anderlecht youngster

    Football

Crystal Palace have signed Belgian youngster Jason Lokilo from Anderlecht.

The 17-year-old winger has been training with Palace's under-21 and under-18 squads since the summer and has now received international clearance to complete his switch to Selhurst Park.

    Jason Lokilo

"I'm very happy to have signed with Crystal Palace," Lokilo told the club's website. "It's a good club making progress.

With Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon, it's very good for wingers!"

  85. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-2

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Both players look shattered. Almost two hours on court, the roof of the arena is closed, it's hot and humid ... put it this way, their tennis gear will need a thorough wash this evening.

Halep is serving for the match. Is there to be a late twist?

  86. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-2

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Last chance saloon for Konta but she's not come this far to go down with a whimper.

Two good points make it 30-0, but then a glorious from Halep, who's suddenly brimming with confidence, makes it 30-15.

Konta responds with a forehand deep into the corner of the court which proves too hot to handle, and then nails a big first serve.

5-2, and quite right too - she's played too well to have only won a single game this set. It's been close all the way through, some great rallies.

  87. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 5-1

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

The match has been going for one hour and 45 minutes but it might not last too much longer.

30-15 down it looks like Konta is about to crumble. Not the case. She hits back to move to 30-40 and earn a breakpont but then nets with a forehand. Deuce.

Bonus for Konta though, as a big Halep first serve is called out despite being clearly in. No over-rule from the umpire, a distracted Halep nets her second servce, and it's another breakpoint.

Alas Halep ends another blistering rally with a superb cross court forehand. Back to deuce, another breakpoint, deuce again, before finally Halep gets over the line courtesy of a Konta error 5-1. Konta has to serve to stay in it.

He was sent back to Anfield after using the coins to pay a £50 fine for turning up late to training.

The 21-year-old has played nine games for Swindon after joining them on a season-long loan, with one clean sheet.

"Lawrence is going to come back, he is very humble and very apologetic," boss Mark Cooper said. "I thought it was brilliant banter, but in the context it was the wrong way to go about it."

  90. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 4-1

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Back on the Konta serve and it's a big first point, Konta producing a lovely little drop shot, Halep just about reaching it but her return is weak and would have been put away by Konta ... but it clips the top of the net, Konta can only lob it up in the air and Halep puts away the volley.

The Romanian gets lucky and it proves a big point. Halep, helped by a contentious line-call, moves to 0-40 and sets up three break points.

She only needs one, Konta - trying to push her opponent back - overcooking a forehand.

Alarm bells are not just tinkling gently, they are now pretty deafening. 4-1 and a double-break to Halep in the final set.

  91. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 3-1

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta's form has seen her rocket from 126th in the rankings to 66th within three months.  She will replace Heather Watson as British number one in next week's rankings.

A superbly controlled volley gives her a sniff of a chance on the Halep serve, moving to 15-30. But Halep, mean old spoilsport that she is, takes the next two points and looks to have slammed the door in Konta's face when all she has to do is whack home a simple forehand with the Brit off the court. But Halep misses it. A terrible miss, like a striker tapping the ball wide from a yard out.

The game goes to deuce, Konta moves to advantage after a brilliant rally but then puts a forehand wide. She screamed something after that error. I'm not sure what but it was very possibly not suitable for a daytime audience.

Halep makes the most of the escape and wraps up the game. That was an opportunity gone begging. Still only one break down though.

  92. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 2-1

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

It's a shame, given the quality of tennis in this match, how few people are in the arena in China to watch it. It's pretty deserted, a ripple of applause after each point.

This service game is another struggle, Halep a completely different animal to the one we saw at the start of the match.

But Konta shows admirable strength and tenacity to get through it. Teeth clinched she takes it to 30. She's back in it. 2-1 to Halep in the decider.

  93. Cook wants more from England

    Cricket

    Alastair Cook

Captain Alastair Cook is urging England's cricketers to carry their momentum from this summer's Ashes victory into their series with Pakistan in the UAE.

"We want to win games of cricket and do it with a smile on our face, there's been some elements of that which is encouraging, now we need to be more consistent," he said.

"We played some really good cricket and some cricket we shouldn't be proud of, we didn't always perform to our level."

  94. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 2-0

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta made 14 unforced errors in the second set, compared to Halep's nine and that, in a nutshell, was the difference between the players.

There's a couple more in this game, helping Halep gallop to 40-0. A loose forehand with Konta out of play halts her march to 2-0 ahead, but Konta puts a forehand long herself off a Halep second serve and it's game over.

  95. Halep v Konta 3-6 6-3 1-0 - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta nips for a bathroom break at the end of the second set. I love that phrase. So polite isn't it and much less crude than saying she's nipped to the bog.

Konta to serve first in the third, crucial set and it's a struggle. Halep is hitting the ball deeper and with more power, making less errors. Konta is trading magnificently with her but Halep is beginning to look slightly the stronger player.

Dangerous to say that though because Konta is such a fighter and hits back when you least expect her to.

It goes to deuce and Halep takes the game when Konta nets with a backhand. A big, early break. Things are suddenly looking a little bleaker.

    Arsenal defence

Why are English clubs struggling in Europe? BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been exploring the issue. Here are some of your comments from his blog.

Freindleonewhocares: I believe it has a lot to do with our top teams trying to "buy"their positions with overseas stars instead of being patient and building a complete team that functions as a team without any ego chasers in it.

LordMalthus: Too much money means too big squads. Players being 'rested' means players aren't used to playing together, preventing effective combinations being formed, and eroding 'team' spirit. Easier to pull for 15 players rather than 25. (see English rugby...). Great sides in the past won as many matches on far fewer players - and it's why Palace, Stoke, Everton, Saints etc. are doing so well.

  97. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round 6-3 3-6

A dodgy decision by Halep to attempt a drop shot at 15-15 allows Konta a glimmer of a chance to set up a break point.

The door is slammed in her face by Halep, who teases an error out of her opponent to make it 30-30. And she sees out the game, and the second set, in rapid fashion.

One-set each, all to play for in the third and final set.

According to the WTA's website, Halep has career earnings of more than $10m. Konta has won less than $1m, which sort of sums up what an upset it would be should Konta hit back in the third and win this contest.

    Simona Halep
  98. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Halep produces a glorious backhand down the line at 30-30 that even Roger Federer would have struggled to return.

It sets up a breakpoint and Halep takes it, courtesy of a forehand put long by Konta.

A shame for the Brit, who had just done the hard work by breaking moments before. It means it is 5-3 in the second set and Halep has a chance to level the match.

The winner, by the way, will face Venus Williams in the last eight, who the other day achieved this.

If you're not au fait with her, here are a few facts for you...

    BBC
  101. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

A much better service game by Konta, holding to 15 to make it 4-2 and keep herself just a break away from getting back in this second set.

And, lo and behold, three awful points at the start of Halep's next service game and it's 0-40, three break points.

Time to get excited? Not quite, Halep hits back in gutsy fashion, racing through the enxt four pints to move to advantage. But then Konta - blimey, she 's a fighter - responds and gets to advantage herself. A fourth break point. Deuce. Halep hits a forehand out, A fifth break point. Ooo, the tension.

Would you believe it? Halep double faults. Game Konta and it's 4-3 and back on serve. This girl is good.

Sonny Bill Williams starts at inside centre, with Ma'a Nonu ruled out with a minor shoulder injury.

Team: Ben Smith, Waisake Naholo, Conrad Smith, Sonny Bill Williams, Julian Savea, Dan Cater, Aaron Smith, Wyatt Crockett, Dane Coles, Charlie Faumuina, Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock, Jerome Jaino, Richie McCaw, Kirean Read.

  104. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta is just looking a little tired for the first time, hitting a weak shot into the net after a punishing long rally.

The Brit produces a blistering return winner off one Halep serve, but the Romanian is definitely playing better in this set, making less unforced errors.

Having said that, serving at 40-15 she puts a routine backhand out and couldn't look more cheesed off had she just realised she'd locked her keys in the car.

But then the rally of the match. Both players land some heavy blows during a long exchange, both make loud Sharapova-like screaming noises after each shot, but Halep comes out on top and holds to 30. She's 4-1 ahead, second set.

  105. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

A little like Tiger Woods when he meant business in the final round of a big tournament, Konta is wearing a bright red top. It's stained in sweat. She's busting a gut out there.

But for the first time chinks in her armour have appeared.

Not helped by a double fault, Konta falls 15-40 behind on her own serve. Last time she fought back to hold. But no heroics this time. Halep takes the game and leads 3-1. A decisive moment? Has the pendulum swung back towards the Romanian?

It's been a hive of activity in the press room at Liverpool's training ground as manager Brendan Rodgers previewed their Europa League tie against FC Sion on Thursday night.

Daniel Sturridge won't be risked as he continues to work back towards full fitness: "We need to make sure we don't break Daniel Sturridge. He won't be involved in the game," Rodgers said.

    Brendan Rodgers

The Liverpool manager also says he won't have a problem if Roy Hodgson selects Sturridge for England's European qualifiers next month, but stressed that he wouldn't be able to play two games in four days.

Sturridge is expected to be involved in the derby at Goodison Park on Sunday: "We will keep him fresh for the weekend. He's still building his way towards fitness," Rodgers added.

  107. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

No doubt about it, Halep has upped her game. She moves 2-1 ahead in the second set (won by Konta 6-3), serving out to 15.

You don't get to the French Open final (which Halep did last year, losing to Sharapova in three sets) without having something about you.

However, she still looks a little unhappy and is clearly a bit taken aback by how well Konta is playing.

It's going to be intriguing to see how this contest pans out. You get the feeling the outcome of this set is going to be crucial.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says although he is keeping striker Daniel Sturridge fresh for Sunday's Merseyside derby with Everton, he would have no problem with England boss Roy Hodgson picking the forward for next month's international games.

England have already qualified for Euro 2016 with two games to spare.

    Daniel Sturridge

Rodgers also confirmed 18-year-old Jordan Rossiter will feature in their Europa League group game with Swiss side FC Sion, after making his debut in the draw with Bordeaux in the same competition.

  111. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta's first serve percentage was 73% in the opening set, a clue as to why she took it.

But hang on. Danger signs. She's 0-30 down in her opening service game in the second set.

A terrific volley after a slightly heavy drop shot gets it to 15-30, but a scorching forehand from Halep (so that's why she's world number two...) brings up two break points for the Romanian - the first she's had on the Konta serve in the entire match.

The first is saved, the second too thanks to a big, big serve. Deuce. Overhead smash from Konta at the net. Advantage. Halep nets an easy backhand. Game Konta. 1-1.

  112. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

    So, into set two.

Halep doesn't look as though she's even broken sweat, but maybe that's because she's not really been able to get any rallies going against a so-far inspired Johanna Konta.

Halep desperately needs to get herself going. Holding the opening game of this second set would be a start.

At 40-15 up that seems a given, but she puts a routine forehand long, which kind of sums up the match.

Great angled forehand from Konta takes it to deuce. Chance of an early break perhaps? Erm, no. Big serve and then a drop-shot and Halep takes it. She's 1-0 ahead in the second but it was a struggle.

Bad, bad miss in the opening point of the game from Konta and another unforced error at 15-15.

Signs of tension creeping in as she aims to wrap up the set?

Possibly, but Halep misses badly herself. 30-30. And in the blink of an eye, Konta takes the set with two big serves.

"It's something we all need to be aware of because it's a pretty brutal game at the moment," Gatland said.

No one has won more games on hard courts this season than Simona Halep.

She has 40 victories on the surface, so no wonder she is - or at least was - the overwhelming favourite to beat Konta at the start of play.

She takes the eighth game of the match to 30. But Konta leads 5-3 and is now serving for the set.

  120. Halep v Konta - live

    Wuhan Open 3rd round

Konta, remember, has not only beaten former world number one Victoria Azarenka and German world number 17 Andrea Petkovic already at this tournament, but had to come through two rounds of qualifying to even get into the main draw in China.

Maybe fatigue might become an issue in this match? Konta certainly seems a little jaded in the sixth game, Halep winning it with ease to 15.

Back on the Konta serve, big game for her this.

  121. Halep v Konta - live

    JK

Danger signs at 15-30, and then again at deuce, but Konta has - like all the world's top players - a knack of coming up with a terrific serve at the crucial moments.

This game is tougher for Konta but after a couple of dueces she comes through and leads 4-1.

Halep looks a little puzzled. No wonder.

"They've got an uphuill battle, to get 9 points they've got to win against Bayern Munich at home, and then against both Zagreb and Olympiakos.

"It's such a hard league and Mourinho and Wenger are trying like made to make sure they've got the fittest side for any one game, but I think with the case last night I do think Petr Cech should've played."

Halep looks a lot happier now. She's just managed to win a game.

Then again you'd expect the 24-year-old to improve given that she is the second bets player in the world and the highest ranked player at this tournament.

Can Konta maintain the levels on her own serve? We're about to find out. 3-1 to the Brit.

  125. Cech should have played

    Football

    David Ospina

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson says Arsene Wenger was wrong to rest Petr Cech for last night's Champions League game with Olympiakos.

The Gunners lost 3-2 at home and now face an uphill struggle to qualify.

"When you're in the position of having lost your first game you need a win to get the first three of 9 or 10 points you need. The goalkeeping position is so important, and we've got one of the best in the world now, so you play him until there are other games like the Capital One Cup," he said.

"When you are desperate and you've got Bayern Munich ahead of you, you've got to play your best team."

  171. Wenger's strange decision

    Football

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

    aw

When Arsene Wenger persuaded Chelsea to sell them goalkeeper Petr Cech, the theory behind his arrival was that the 33-year-old's experience, wisdom and acquaintance with success would make the difference in the big games.

So what sense did it make for Wenger to leave Cech on the bench and select his deputy Ospina for a game where Arsenal simply could not risk any mistakes or the concession of cheap goals?

Forget talk about any slight injury to Cech. He was fit enough to take his place on the bench so surely fit enough to start a game of this significance.

Wenger's decision was laced with high-risk - and in the context of Arsenal's hopes of making progress in the Champions League a risk not worth taking, as well as a serious error of judgement.

  172. Gunners calamity

    Football

    do

So where did it all go wrong for Arsenal? Well, it doesn't help when your keeper throws the ball in his own net, obviously (David Ospina will not be asking for a DVD of this game as a Christmas pressie).

Arsene Wenger's side knew nothing other than victory would do after defeat by Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia in their opening game - and with two meetings with group favourites Bayern Munich still to come.

But instead they endured a dreadful night and must now become the first team since Galatasaray in 2012 to lose their first two group games and still reach the knockout stage.

    A tall order indeed.
