A painful evening for Bosnia-Herzegovina fans - and the team too.

"I'm very disappointed about the game. We lost and unfortunately, it's very hard for me to speak about it," said manager Mehmed Bazdarevic.

Needless to say, Republic gaffer Martin O'Neill was rather chuffed with victory.

"I never once dared to dream about getting to France, never once because of the group that we were involved in, so it is special," said O'Neill, reflecting on how his team were pitched against Germany and Poland.

"That moment when the referee blows the whistle and you are in France, it is just very, very special, very special indeed."

Goalscoring hero Jon Walters added: "The whole team on the pitch are heroes. We got there in the end, we did it the hard way, but we got there.

"You've got to take it in because these moments don't come round often in a career."

For those who don't recall Theirry Henry's infamous brush with the Irish, it happened six years ago when the French forward's hand denied the Irish a place at the 2010 World Cup.

On that occasion, the referee's failure to spot the Henry's blatant infringement in the play-off second leg in Paris led to the Republic's heartbreaking failure to qualify for the finals in South Africa.

This time, fortune favoured the boys in green.

If you live in the Republic of Ireland and are waking up without a sore head, then I daresay you are in a minority.

In front of an ecstatic crowd in Dublin, Martin O'Neill's team beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory and qualification for Euro 2016.

It wasn't without controversy - Ireland's opener coming from the penalty spot after Bosnia's Ervin Zukanovic was very harshly adjudged to have handled a Daryl Murphy cross.

But. hey, the Irish have been on the receiving end before - Thierry Henry anybody? - and over the two legs it is hard to argue O'Neill's side didn't deserve victory.

Now they need to get their flights booked for next summer...
